I can think of so many reasons why trading for Pence, or making no major deal at all, would have been more logical than trading for Jimenez.

I guess from the perspective of Cleveland's upper management, holding onto Kipnis and Chisenhall was the utmost priority. Like I said, I understand the win now, go for broke to win the division mindset but in my eyes Ubaldo is not worth Pomeranz and White. Let's also keep in mind there are major concerns over Jimenez's recent dip in velocity. He's certainly not lighting up the gun like last year.

Our biggest hole was clearly the OF and we failed to address that missing on Ludwick. Fukudome does not make up for the absence of Sizemore and Choo. The price Philly paid for Pence makes the matter that much worse.

What are your thoughts on Masterson at this point in the season, still high?

I mean, I have typed (and thought) about it as much as I care to in the Indians thread (and on Twitter). Reckless and illogical are the two words I would use to sum it up. And actually, reading that Keith Law piece posted in here, that also sums up how I feel, more or less.

And Ludwick would have maybe been marginally more useful than Fukudome, but nowhere near a difference-maker, or someone who could make up for those two being out.

And yeah, Masterson is still sweet. No reason to think otherwise after he has made me look good.

I don't understand it. not with the way they've played the past 2-3 months.

On the surface, Being 1.5 out and making that deal sounds reasonable, but not with how we got there.

before and after the trade, this team has almost no chance to actually win the division. .500 will be an achievement. Which is fine, the goal is/was next year. So why get desperate?

I think Kevin Gregg is my least favorite Oriole to EVER wear the uniform.....no joke.

Every time he pitches, I either change the channel or do something else.

Unreal:

Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
The combined number for Koji Uehara and Mike Adams this year -- 95 innings, 17 walks, 111 strikeouts, and a 1.42 ERA.

The idiotic part about the Orioles and how the handled Koji is the fact that they didn't outright hand him the closer's job to start the year. There was NO need to sign Gregg. What they could have done is have Koji close, drive his value even more up and get a BETTER return.

%*@!@#+ MacPhail Deal Koji and have Jim Johnson close to end the year....bunch of morons in that O's FO...hopefully MacPhail is shown the door in a few weeks. Good riddance.

Ellsbury...

On Ogando... Yeah, I'm a little surprised. He basically throws a fastball and a slider... But the fastball has so much movement it's ridiculous... A little worried about him hitting an innings wall at some point, but apparently the Rangers are comfortable with it and he's been great, so who knows...

The package for Adams is fantastic for both teams, I think... The Rangers have several guys that project better as starters down the line with more upside, but the Padres got a couple of kids that profile fantastically for that park. Erlin is a guy that'll be great in that park but probably would've struggled in Texas because he's short and struggles to throw on a downward plane at times... Ball stays up on him a little bit. Not a ton of upside with the prospects, but a strong chance of being contributors.

I really think the Rangers are set and have the pieces to make a run now... Those two bullpen arms plus Feliz if he gets his head right is so, so nasty. Leads late in games = game over now.

From John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Was Votto for Bautista in the works?
We know that the Reds swung and missed on the trade front on Hunter Pence, Michael Bourn and Ubaldo Jimenez. But is there a chance they were working on something much bigger?

A reader tipped me a while back that he has a friend in baseball who told him the Reds were talking to the Blue Jays about a trade Jose Bautista-for-Joey Votto trade. The Reds would have had to kick in a prospect as well.

I get tips like that from time to time. I usually dismiss them. But the fact that the Blue Jays sent a scout to Dayton to specifically watch Daniel Corcino, probably the Reds best pitching prospect, tells me they were talking trade with the Reds.

Votto-for-Bautista makes sense on several levels for the Reds:

–It opens a spot for Yonder Alonso.

–It fills left field with about as good bat as you could possibly hope for. Bautista is hitting .324 with 31 home runs and 71 RBI.

–Bautista is signed through 2015 at $14 million per year. He has an option for 2016 at the same number. Votto is cheaper next year at $9.5 million, but he makes $17 million in 2013 after which he’s a free agent. And he made clear when he signed his current contract that he was only interested in a three-year deal.

The Blue Jays, of course, would get their hometown hero — a player who could sell tickets.

The Reds would never confirm that they were talking about a trade like that. And there may be nothing to it. But it’s certainly interesting to consider.
