Yankees don't want him.

Isn't it pretty weird that Boston said they weren't gonna spend and were done with that? Now, if they get Lester, they're spending 300+? What yall think of that? Panic move? Desperate move? What is it?

I'm a Yankees fan so I'm not throwing shots at Boston for spending money.

i don't take that as shots at all. you're right. our FO came out last year and laughed at what you guys did. now we turn around and do the same.

read something interesting today. some writer here in Boston pointed out that Boston since '06 has gone on these binge spending sprees every 4 years.

'06 was lugo, drew, and matsuzaka
'10 was gonzo, crawford
'14 is sandoval, ramirez, and TBD

was actually interesting as he pointed out that in '06, we still had a core of home grown guys (pedroia, youk, lester, pap, buchholz, ellsbury) to be the core of the team. went on to win a chip, despite those moves being semi-busts. '10 we had none of that really and you saw what happened. we sucked. in '14, it's on betts and xander along with owens, swihart, etc in the minors to be that home grown talent that develops and takes the next step. if they don't, none of these moves will matter and it'll all be for not. it was an interesting way of looking at it. something that only partially crossed my mind.

@AceballStats: #Astros Jeff Bagwell had as many seasons with 40+ HR, 30+ SB, & 100+ BB (2) as Barry Bonds. No other player in history did this even once.

We will :smokin

P.S. Funny there is fan base turning on a player talk coming from a Dodgers fan.

Every fanbase has them. It wasn't a general statement I was making. It was a direct reply to the poster I quoted. The sense of entitlement is appalling amongst fans. The sense of "ownership". I criticize players all the time, fairly or unfairly, but cry and get hurt hurt over them changing uniforms... Nah man. It's a businesS, let them cook.

So fold your ******* cape.

I think Boston FO looked dumb as hell trying to take a frugal approach to free agency

They were feeling themselves after Daniel Nava hit .300 on the way to a WS victory

Feeling themselves so hard that they basically forfeited a season trying to adhere to their bogus "philosophy"

I had little interest in last years team. I watched a lot of games the first half of the year but once early July rolled around, I was finished. After hearing they signed both Sandoval and Ramirez, i'm interested again. Just as ownership planned

Back to spending money on good players, as they should

Headley is likely going to be on a new team.

He wants 4 years, Yankees refuse to go over 3 years. Yankees also a couple of million apart per season.

I agree he isn't worth the 4 year / $52mil he seems to be looking for. But A-Rod as everyday 3B

What a disaster this offseason is for the Yankees, and mostly self-inflicted

isn't it too early to declare things a disaster?

I don't think it's disaster. I also don't think we're going to the post season.

Three things I want to see from the Yankees.

1. My man Alex come back and get 2000 RBIs and 3000 hits :smokin :smokin :smokin
2. Betances have another dominating year.
3. Not to overpay another player and not to go get another old *** man. Keep it young and raise our own team.

Disaster.

They're not pursuing Lester or Scherzer. Which they need a top end starter. Lester is such a safe investment for the Yankees it's ridiculous.

Their everyday 3B is A-Rod. That's laughable. They don't have a SS, or everyday RF. Their DH & 1B are injury prone.

And they could end up letting Robertson go. Which is a ridiculously bad baseball move.

Betances is a Set-Up man, and his value is in that he can give you 2 innings with 99mph. You won't bring in a closer for 2 innings, so you lose that advantage.

Betances - Robertson is a nasty SU - Closer combo. Even if Robertson starts to falter and becomes a Papelbon, you don't have to worry about money because Betances won't become a Free Agent for 5 years. Simply switch the roles.

i dunno about this. i can see them swooping in at any point. when things appear quiet in the yankee camp, it always makes me nervous.

and i don't think any guy older than 27 or so set to get 6 years $140M is a safe bet. no one.

Maybe they can swoop in.

And sure, he could stink the last couple years.

But I like Lester's chances, based on the type of pitcher he is. And non-power pitching lefties are good money for Yankee stadium.

2 reasons specifically why they need Lester
1. Every starter for the Yankees is a question mark. Tanaka's great, but still has the elbow tear, Pineda is great but always injured, CC is a power pitcher with no power is at best an okay #3, Shane Greene could be a fluke and he was at best a back end starter, Nova is inconsistent and coming off TJ.
2. They have very little committed for a year 5 or 6 for the rest of the team, and I don't see anybody in the next couple of years that are must have huge contracts, and someone like Betances won't even hit Free Agency until a Robertson deal has finished.

Also when they lose Headley because he wants more than is plausible to give him, and want McCarthy who would be over $10+ mil. You might as well just go after Lester because the money opened up for him.

Yasmany Tomas and D'Backs agree to 6 yr $68M deal with opt-out after 4 years.

The way teams and analysts were talking I thought he was gonna get a deal closer to $100M

Damnit that's what he got

Half the teams who scouted him were out before any bids because he was supposed to reach $100mil.
