Wow, Bill Conlin accused of molestation
30t6p3b.gif

Spoiler [+]
Three women and a man said they were molested as children by Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin, according to a report published Tuesday on the Philadelphia Inquirer website.

The four alleged victims told the Inquirer they were molested by Conlin in the 1970s, when they were between the ages of 7 and 12. The Inquirer reported that prosecutors took statements from the four last year but could not act on the allegations because they are beyond the statute of limitations. The law in New Jersey does not allow for cases to be prosecuted that occurred and were not reported prior to 1996.

One of the alleged victims was Kelley Blanchet, a niece of Conlin's. Blanchet is currently a prosecutor in Atlantic City, N.J., according to the Inquirer.

"This is a tragedy," Blanchet told the Inquirer. "People have kept his secret. It's not just the victims, it's the victims' families. There were so many people who knew about this and did nothing."

Blanchet also told the paper that she and the other alleged victims were speaking out because of the Penn State case, where former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky faces charges of molesting young boys. He faces a trial in 2012. She said the case brought back painful memories.

Conlin, who received the 2011 J.G. Taylor Spink Award for "meritorious contributions to baseball writing" from the Baseball Hall Of Fame, was a regular contributor to ESPN's The Sports Reporters in the early years of the show, which debuted in 1998. He last appeared on the show in late 2002.

Conlin, who is 77, retired from the Daily News on Tuesday. His attorney, George Bochetto, issued a statement to the Inquirer, saying: "Mr. Conlin is obviously floored by these accusations, which supposedly happened 40 years ago. He has engaged me to do everything possible to bring the facts forward to vindicate his name."

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Reds are about to get Sean Marshall for Travis Wood and a couple minor leaguers.
I have no idea where Marshall fits in unless we plan on using him as a closer because we already have Bill Bray and Chapman in the bullpen, if he doesn't pan out as a starter.

Travis Wood is going to be really good.

I hate to see Marshall go if that goes down, I really like that kid.

Theo is really tearing the whole thing down isn't he?  He's going to move Garza, Marshall, already let Aramis leave, Pena will be gone, he's going to get 50 prospects in, and then start movin in 2 years ain't he?

Don't let me down Theo.  This plan better work man.

That's the right move, CP. Theo has no choice but to rebuild from the ground up. It's going to be a tough year or two for you Cubs fans.
Reds nearly paid a king's ransom for Latos. I think he's a very good #2, but can he anchor a rotation as the ace? I like the Alonso kid and overall San Diego (Byrnes) won on the deal. Like some of you have mentioned, where does Rizzo end up? Wrigley is a likely destination and I would personally part with Garza for him.

Now on to Yu Darvish. First, I'm surprised the posting fee was only slightly higher than Dice K's. Toronto might have backed down because of rumors that Darvish would be reluctant to play for the Jays. His agent declared Darvish's intent to play somewhere on the West Coast. Yu is going to get a contract similar to C.J. Wilson's deal in the five-year, $75 million range. Still shocked the Yanks didn't maneuver harder for Wilson, Pro. Understandably Boston was reluctant to post for Yu because of Dice K's history with the club, and same with the Yanks and Igawa. The move for Yu Darvish is certainly risky but a necessary power move for Texas to counter the Angels' big off-season additions. Ryan and Daniels have done quite enough to gain the trust and credibility from baseball credits. The Rangers probably have the best front office in all of baseball, so I firmly believe Darvish was properly scouted and the move was heavily calculated. The next big splash they can make is to sign Prince. In the big picture, I'd much rather have Darvish and Prince over Wilson and Pujols. If the Rangers can indeed land Fielder, that places them right back over the Angels for favorites in the division and perhaps the entire American League. Lastly, as you guys know I'm very sold on Yu Darvish. I understand the risk factor involved but he throws with good velocity in the mid-90s and can use a wide assortment of different pitches. I fully expect him to help lead Texas' rotation and wouldn't be surprised to see immediate success. Looking forward, the more difficult aspects might be adapting to hitters once they figure out his stuff and also adjusting to the American culture and lifestyle.

I remember Darvish in the WBC, he was filthy, but I remember him trying to close out a game, it took like 30-40 pitches, but he got 3 Ks, I think he'll do fine, but have to get his pitch count down because he'll probably want to strike everyone out.

^ Periwinkle, your point about Darvish reminded me something about Aroldis Chapman. I think the Reds need to take a Justin Verlander approach towards his growth and improvement, meaning the velocity is already there but learn to tone it down a notch (couple MPH) for better location and command. If this is done right I fully believe Chapman will be a very successful reliever in the majors. As baseball fans, we'll be able to tell his new effectiveness in 2012 based on pitch count. He may also need to add another pitch to mix his stuff up for batters, in comparison Darvish has a plethora of options (different pitches) as a starter.

That'll probably come when they refine his game. He's like Dice K in the sense that he's coming in with a reported 6 or 7 pitch repertoire. Probably eliminate a few and stay with what's most effective and he should be more efficient.

^^ think the sox overpaid a bit for Danks considering Billingsly was in pretty much the same spot and he got 3/$30, but i think Danks will outperform the contract considering he's been a very good pitcher every year except 2011.

Agreed.  There's not many on that team I'd keep around TBH.

I agree it was a king's ransom but those are kids I think they needed to get rid of.  They had better prospects/MLB'ers at the same positions.  They're trying to go all in to win now before Votto becomes a Yankee (

).  I'd keep Rizzo but that wouldn't happen.  I like him more than I do Alonso.

While I always understood it, I can't help but think that comparing all the Japanese pitchers to each other is a bit silly.  That's kinda like me saying "CJ struggled in the playoffs so I won't trade for Greinke since they're both white"

John Danks got a five-year, $65 million extension with the CWS.

It seems like we may have a few fireworks soon.

The Nationals are the favorites for Gonzalez, but the Red Sox are trying to get him and Bailey in one deal.

Beltran is down to the Cards, Blue Jays and Indians. I think the Indians are just being used as leverage, though.

I truly hope the Sox get Gonzalez. Whoever gets him will give up way too much and regret it sooner rather than later.
