Download the Ballpark app. Generally, 30 mins before first pitch, you can check for upgraded seats thoughout the stadium. It's awesome in Oakland because the stadium is dead, probably not going to be great in other ballparks, but doesn't hurt to try. I've been able to upgrade to behind home plate for like $8 before.
BTW, the seats you buy to get into the stadium do not affect the upgrade.
