Welcome to the life of having a competent GM, CP...

They'll be fine in the long run, but its gonna take time. Really sucks they don't have anything they can really trade at this point to haul in something serious and really kick start the thing with a huge haul.

They have that piece Dirk but it'd take a huge offer to get Castro out of there. That or he goes the Upton route. I mean, you hear the whispers loud or quiet about their complaints about him.

I don't think you trade Castro unless you're worried he won't stay when FA hits... He's a guy you keep and build around, even with the struggles and a step back in productivity this year.

Is he arb-eligible next year?

The impression I got from Nowitness' comments was that Theo did what he had to in full-scale rebuild mode. Nothing more, nothing less. The prospects he lured aren't overwhelming, but well worth the price to clear players/contracts. I think classic Epstein moves are coming in the near future with added payroll flexibility.

Cubs fans: Why did the Sori deal/talks in-place ultimately falter?

Like that Texas got Dempster relatively cheap, especially with the bad Feliz news. Wasn't worth parting with Olt or Perez for J. Johnson or Shields.

Pro, call me crazy but I'd take a risk on moving Starlin for a monster package. I'm talking huge haul.

Yea and I think he has four years of it too. Not saying they should but he'd be the one to bring back the big haul they'd want.

Champ, my way of thinking is if you are going to do it to do it immediately and not let it drag out like Upton is. They started as tiny whispers about his ethic and now look what it turned into. And Upton is 10x better than Castro. Like I said, not saying they should but if they get a major haul of up the middle or SP talent it's hard to say no.

I heard Theo wanted Detroit's 3B prospect to eat almost all of the contract and it went off from there.

That's what I'm gettin at, we never get prospects, good or bad. And Theo has done nothin but stack em since he got there. He's pulled in like 10-12 pospects since October. Rizzo bein one of them. Then whatever his haul was during the draft. In a year or two if one or two of those guys sprinkle in and make an impact, or even allow him to flip them to add pieces, then he's doin something we haven't had since, late 80's when we produced Grace, Palmeiro, Moyer, Maddux, Walton, Smith etc. And not all of those guys were supposed to be major impacts, minus Grace and Maddux.
Now we just have to flip Sori and Garza for some sort of haul and I'm happy as can be. Hopefully our org can work with some of these kids and profuce somethin out of em.

Thanks for summing it up.i am just happy we moving in the right direction.

This is an old article, but there is nobody I HATE more in MLB than Luke Scott.
Scott talks about these basic principles -- honor, integrity, accountability, hard work -- and says they all trace back to the founders of this country. He espouses them frequently, especially to his teammate and close friend, outfielder Felix Pie. The day before going to the shooting range, I mention to Scott that I want to explore his relationship with the Dominican Republic-born Pie, because it's a part of his life that few outside the clubhouse seem to know about.

He smiles.

"Felix is my friend," he says. "I give him a hard time. The reason why I give him a hard time is because there are certain people you deal with and you go up and talk to them, and it doesn't work. They don't understand.

"I tell him about some of the ways he's acted: 'Look, you're acting like an animal, you're acting like a savage.'"

Scott turns to his locker and pulls out a bag of plantain chips.

"So I throw bananas in his helmet. Here are my banana chips to remind him that whenever he acts like an animal, 'Hey, that's what other people are thinking. They're just not telling you, but that's what they're thinking about. And I'm telling you so that you're aware of that so you can make a cognitive decision to not behave like that.' I would want someone to tell me that instead of letting you making a jerk of yourself."

Pro, what do you think Andrus commands in prospects? You figure Daniels and Nolan are seriously planning to clear the way for Profar sooner than later.

Think Dirk might have a better grasp of what they'd need or how they'd configure it but IDK if he'd be the one who I'd let go. Becomes easier if Hamilton leaves because I think you put Kinsler in left, Andrus at 2nd and Profar at SS. Or if Hamilton stays, then shop Kinsler. He looks like the best SS in the AL for years to come and Kinsler looks like he's declining a bit.

Where did I say anything about Soto or Dempster fitting into long-term plans? I was commenting on the idea that Theo did work when, in reality, he traded away rentals for spare prospects.
None of the guys the Rangers traded for Soto/Dempster profile as big league regulars and weren't near the Rangers upper-echelon group. Villanueva might be an average ML third baseman but at 21 in Class-A and not exactly lighting it up, meh. Dudes were tweeting today tht he might be a Top 100 prospect, but nobody around the Rangers really thinks he was in their Top 15 or so guys and he was clearly the best of the bunch.
That's Theo doing work? I just don't think so. He didn't get anybody that was certain to contribute long-term or ready to step in today and help. Theo did fine and did exactly what the Cubs should have done. I know that's exciting and new for you guys, though.

it's call potential with major upside bro. Player development. The same thing was about Anthony Rizzo in San Deigo.look at the kid now. I am for sure Arody Vazicano contribute in 2013. he was braves Top 3 pitching prospect until he had that tommy John surgery.

The line of thinking seems to be Hamilton leaves, Kinsler bumps to LF, and Profar slides in at 2nd... But I just don't know if that's the course of action I take... Then you're looking at being sub-par offensively a left field, DH (Young) and maybe first base unless Olt comes in and really rakes... What you get from Kinsler is really solid at second base, but it's fringy in LF... I just don't know that I want him out there.

I think you get better value shopping either Kinsler or Elvis, especially if Elvis is a guy you can center a deal around for someone like Upton. Kinsler at 2nd, Profar at SS, and Upton in LF is significantly better than the alternative. But you just have to figure out what types of prospects you have to throw in and make the deal work for Arizona. It won't be Olt or Perez, as they'll both be on the opening day 25-man next year.

And what I said was... None of the guys they got from the Rangers have major upside. The best guy they got is a fringy everyday big leaguer. The Rangers develop talent right now as well or better than anyone in baseball... So I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

They played upside with Vizcaino, and that's fine. They took a lottery ticket there and it's a bet worth making if you're them. But I never said anything about any of the deals other than the Rangers deals.

And who didn't think Rizzo would hit? San Diego traded from depth for a quality bullpen arm... A good trade for the Cubs for damn sure, but let's not act like Theo found a diamond in the rough. He swapped value for value.

Really surprised orioles didn't push for Blanton more though he's a solid starter
He's no better than Tommy Hunter and Phils wanted the O's #3 prospect (Schoop) in return.

Here's a quote from Dan Duquette
"The opportunities we looked at had a cost and I wasn't convinced that they weren't a lot better than the people we had in the organization, and you know, hence, we weren't able to make some of the deals we had on the table"

They'd have to give up at least one prospect on that level for Upton IMO. Andrus doesn't have too many years of control left for him to be worh Upton if you follow.

AJ is having a good year but Cy Young. No way so far, I'd have him maybe 10th  check out the WAR leaderboards (BTW ESPN just introduced WAR to their site but I wouldn't use their since it uses the WAR from Baseball Reference which doesn't calculate home ballparks, home/road splits and level of competition. Fangraphs WAR does).

Rizzo and castro is an amazing core to build around, can't wait for a few years till they have a contending team

Those Dice-K comparisons are looking right on point for Yu Darvish.

Another 7ER and 6BB today. :x

Hoping he can turn it around. Been a huge fan of his since his first year in Japan.

Edit- at this troll at the Rangers game. Even Joe Nathan seemed to be cussing him out.

Wasn't saying so much as far as a pitches. I'm talking about the inability to transfer his success from Japan to the US as well as his control issues.

Dice-K never had that kinda stuff. And he was a head case. Anybody that compared them was and still is an idiot. They're not similar at all.

He is struggling right now. But he's got a lot of things going for him that Dice never had, even at his peak over here.
