Baseball America 2013 Minor League Player of the Year: Byron Buxton

More than 250 players in the full-season minors out-homered Byron Buxton this season. Yet that didn’t prevent the 19-year-old center fielder from ranking as the No. 1 prospect in baseball at midseason or from winning the Midwest League MVP award or from—spoiler alert—ranking as the top prospect in both Class A leagues in which he played this season.

The Twins even ticketed their uber-prospect, in the words of one scout, “The best minor leaguer I’ve ever seen,” for the Arizona Fall League in October.

Now, Buxton can add one more feather to his cap: Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year, a distinction he sewed up with an all-around game seldom seen from a teenager in his first full season.

In stops at low Class A Cedar Rapids and—following a late-June promotion—high Class A Fort Myers, Buxton hit a cumulative .334/.424/.520 with 49 extra-base hits, 55 stolen bases and a sparkling 76-to-105 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 125 games. He led the minors with 18 triples, finished second with 109 runs scored—one behind Marcus Semien of the White Sox—and 12th in stolen bases.

More impressively, Buxton ranked sixth in the minor league batting race, 10th in hits (163) and seventh in on-base percentage, despite being a full year younger than any other member of those top-10 lists.

Recent Winners:
2012: Wil Myers
2011: Mike Trout
2010: Jeremy Hellickson
2009: Jason Heyward
2008: Matt Wieters

Buxton. :pimp: Man, the wait is on. Tom Kelly, who has seen his fair share of baseball of course, also called him the fastest player he's ever seen.

El Capitan. :smh:

Bobby V can't keep his mouth shut, can he? Awful thing to say about the Yankees not being there after 9/11. That entire team was there for them and did a lot for the city. They were in Chicago and came back in the days after. I didn't think I could despise and respect him less but he just did it.

NEW YORK -- Yankees team president Randy Levine called it "very sad" that former Mets manager Bobby Valentine would choose to say the Yankees were AWOL during the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

On the 12th anniversary of 9/11, Bobby Valentine (shown managing the Mets in 2001) said the Yankees were AWOL following the attacks.
Valentine, appearing on WFAN Radio, made his comments on Wednesday, 12 years to the day of the tragedy.

"Bobby Valentine should know better than to be pointing fingers on a day like today," Levine said in a phone conversation. "Today is a day of reflection and prayer. The Yankees, as has been well documented, visited Ground Zero, the Armory, the Javits Center, St. Vincent's Hospital and many other places during that time. We continue to honor the 9/11 victims and responders.

"On this day, he would have been better to have kept his thoughts to himself rather than seeking credit, which is very sad to me."

Valentine, who was the Mets' manager when the attacks took place, said he had to counsel players he said felt were much more active in the community than their Yankees counterparts.

"Let it be said that during the time from 9/11 to 9/21, the Yankees were [AWOL]," Valentine said on WFAN. "You couldn't find a Yankee on the streets of New York City. You couldn't find a Yankee down at Ground Zero, talking to the guys who were working 24/7."

He added: "Many of them didn't live here, and so it wasn't their fault. And many of them did not partake in all that, so there was some of that jealousy going around [among Mets players]. Like, 'Why are we so tired? Why are we wasted? Why have we been to the funerals and the firehouses, and the Yankees are getting all the credit for bringing baseball back?' And I said, 'This isn't about credit, guys. This is about doing the right thing.' "

On Wednesday, players, coaches and umpires across Major League Baseball wore American flag patches embroidered on the sides of their caps in commemoration of the tragedy. Special lineup cards were used, and patriotic on-field tributes were planned for the day's 15 games. Flags were half-staff, and there were moments of silence across baseball.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Chris johnson was not havin it..lmao...I expect fernandezes next HR allowed to be pimped with a puig/wil myers bat flip.

Fernandez only did that bc Gattis hit a bomb off him and looked at his own moon shot.

Fernandez also spit in direction of c johnson. Someone is getting plunked tomorrow

It'll be Farrell. They always use the narrative of which of the teams at the top of the league had the worst record last year.

Yea, it's definitely going to Farrell...but....

I think the job Girardi has done this year has been nothing short of miraculous.

The Sox roster has been good/competitive for about a decade or so. Last year was an aberration because of Bobby V's ineptitude. To me, the Yankees have dealt with far more issues, both on and off the field...the fact that Girardi has kept them in playoff contention is a testament to the job he's done with that roster.

Pro, what the hell is happening to the rangers? they're really about to make me adopt a new AL squad.

Their offense sunk six feet deep. They need a strong series against the A's to give themselves a chance at the division I think. Rangers' schedule is pretty tough the rest of the way, while the A's have it much easier.

I watched the Marlins Braves highlight breakdown on MLB Tonight.  I wholeheartedly agree with them.  The fact that Fernandez is getting negative attention is an absolute joke.  For a couple of reasons.  1) Gattis pimped the hell out of his homerun FIRST, when they were losing 4-0.  2) Chris Johnson was running his mouth during his third at bat, and continued to do so while running to first base after he hit a lazy fly ball to left field.

THEN Fernandez admired his homerun.

I just dont understand the logic behind the reactions.  First of all, Fernandez decided to be the bigger man, and own up to what he did.  He said he felt embarrassed and he will learn from this.  I thought it was classy and showed that he took ownership of this.  Great move.

THEN Brian McCann goes on to say (and I am paraphrasing): "He realized that he messed up. I think emotions got the best of him.  You cant do that here.  You will get someone hurt."

Oh really McCann?  To steal from what Harold Reynolds said last night.....did you make similar comments to Chris Johnson and Evan Gattis after the game?  Because these two clowns are the ones who started this entire mess.  I almost guarantee you that McCann didnt say anything close to that to his teammates, if anything at all.

As an baseball fan who doesnt have a horse in this race, I gained a ton of respect for Fernandez for this.  Subsequently, I lost respect for Gattis, Johnson and more specifically Brian McCann.
