I dont mind the 2 WC teams, but it needs to be best of 3. Baseball isnt set up for 1 game sudden death, unless there is a tie, but that is a different issue.

They won't do it scheduling wise. They don't wanna go into November by much and they don't wanna start the season earlier. It'll kill the team that wins, especially if it's a 3 game series. It would have to be back to back to back days and then maybe a travel day after. Say it's New York and the Angels that make it. One in NY, one in LA, then back in NY and then you have to go on the road to start the DS.

^ i like the idea someone had here earlier of having the 1st wild card team have a twice to beat advantage in a 3 game series. or, do a best of 3 where the home team gets games 2 and 3 (or maybe even the choice of 1-2 or 2-3 at home) to cut down on travel. while the games are exciting, im not a fan of one-and-done baseball series, especially in the playoffs. and if the regular season/winning the division to not be a wild card team was so important, why even add a 2nd wild card in the first place?

also, the start times are up for the first 2 games of each DS http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps.jsp

I mean the Indians had their chances in the game but that last 10 game winning streak or so was against the worst teams in baseball. Not to take anything away from them of course.

The second was actually added to GIVE the division winners more of an advantage due to the WC teams having to play first

i suppose, but i still feel like it dilutes the playoffs and a do-or-die game isnt a real representation of the sport (and yes i realize this is part of the argument for winning your division)

was 4 divisions per league (a la the NFL) ever in serious discussions? (with or without expanding to 32 teams)?

Hate to derail the discussion, but :smh: at these protestors. Not even for the fact that they couldn't answer simple A-Rod trivia correctly, but the fact they are wasting time picketing. Like their opinions are going to decide his fate.

NEW YORK (WFAN) – Flags, signs, chants and coffee spillage.

It’s been a wacky few days in Manhattan with Alex Rodriguez appealing his 211-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball. Members of the group Hispanics Across America have turned out by the hundreds to throw their support behind A-Rod, who was given a lengthy ban for his reported ties to Biogenesis, the shuttered Florida clinic accused of peddling performance-enhancing drugs.

Two protesters holding signs that read “Randy Levine is the devil” admitted this week to a New York Daily News photographer that they had no idea who exactly they were protesting against. Levine is the Yankees’ president.

That said, the “Boomer & Carton” show decided to put a few more supporters to the test. Show staffer Tommy Lugauer headed to the MLB offices on Wednesday, delivering his results Thursday morning.

The guys weren’t impressed.

“Do you know what team drafted Alex Rodriguez?”

Supporter: “Um, Yankees.”

Correct answer: Seattle Mariners.

“Do you know how many MVPs he’s won?”

Supporter: “I think six.”

Correct answer: three.

“When he hits a home run, do you know John Sterling’s radio call?”

Supporter: “How is it? I think it’s ‘See ya!’”

Correct answer: An A-bomb! From A-Rod!

“Do you know the team he hit his 500th home run against?”

Supporter: “Uh, Yankees.”

Correct answer: Kansas City Royals. He was playing for the Yankees.

Hispanics Across America president Fernando Mateo was on hand and on the attack again Wednesday, wearing a neck brace after an alleged run-in — featuring the aforementioned hot coffee — with a security guard Tuesday.

Some of his comments:

– “Don’t listen to Randy Levine and the New York Yankees, who are really the undercurrent, pushing Bud Selig before he leaves to get this guy out of the game.”

– “We need to make sure that the punishment fits the crime. We’re not saying don’t punish him. Please, I want to make that very clear. What we are saying is don’t give him the death sentence.”

– “Punish him! Fine him! But don’t end his career.”

– “We want them to hear the fans. We want them to know that A-Rod has a family, has a foundation.”

– “We’re gonna hit the Yankees in their pocket, where it hurts. We’re gonna ask the people to boycott. We’re gonna protest in front of Yankee Stadium. Randy Levine should resign.”

Baseball isnt set up for 1 game sudden death

Reality is that baseball is perfect for a "1 game" playoff game. That's if you have an Ace.

How does it dilute the playoffs? MLB wanted to expand the playoffs and at the same time weaken or put the WC teams at a disadvantage. WC teams were having too much success, with five WC winners winning the World Series from 95-2011 ('97 Marlins, '02 Angels, '03 Marlins, '04 Red Sox, '11 Cardinals).

What do you mean by "real representation"?

There was a point where MLB was seriously considering folding a couple of franchises, so no, expanding to 32 teams in order to have four division winners go at it was never an option.

It gives team an incentive to win the division, and not be content with being one of the WC teams. It bleeds into the regular season, did you not see how the NL Central played out. It was a dogfight until the end.

I don't mind WC teams winning it all, especially if you consider some divisions are stronger than others (ie AL East the last decade). Personally its disadvantage enough for me to not have home field. That could just be me though.

edit: by dilute i mean exactly that, add more wild card teams. if the emphasis was on winning the division, leave the playoffs to the division winners with one wild card to even out the teams. but if the goal straight up was to expand the playoffs, then ill just have to accept it, alright.

"Real representation" because baseball has such a long season with so many games, for it to come down to one do-or-die game when the schedule is built on 3 or 4 game series' is counter-intuitive to me. Tiebreakers, sure because theyre tied at the end. I was gonna bring up the Indians today, but they had the same record as the Rays so that doesnt work  . Maybe I just need to get used to it, but right now im not a fan. And of course, this is all IMHO.

Its Choptober :pimp:

if the wc game were 3 game winner series it would stretch out the entire playoffs. Just look at boston they last played on Sunday and their playoff game isnt until Friday thats already a long wait.

Hungover as hell.  I would call it a freudian slip but my brain isn't even functioning at that kind of level right now.

  Appreciate the correction.

Guys.  Best of FIVE.  Five.

What I want to happen:

Pirates in 5

Braves in 5

A's in 5

Rays in 5

What I think will happen:

Cardinals in 4

Braves in 4

Tigers in 5

Red Sox in 4

Almost the exact opposite of what I want.

I want Rays, A's, Braves (J. Upton), and Pirates.

Kershaw sets the tone in G1. ATL has undermined my postseason expectations.
