Sad thing about Barry...he didn't need the roids.

A lot of players in today's game/media/fans/ex-players don't respect the records that they broke. It is what it is. There will NEVER be common ground on this discussion.

He needed them to hit 73

not necessarily.

People always ask me, if not for steroids how did Barry put up such insane numbers as an old man.

I think the perception of steroids helped Barry more than the steroids.

Follow me down this path, for arguments sake accept that;

a). Barry Bonds used steroids, but they don't really help you hit home-runs.
b) Baseball began juicing the baseball in 1994.
c) Hitting 60+ home runs is as much a matter of luck as it is skill, no matter how much power you have you need some to be aided by wind, no mike trouts to pull them back over the wall. case in point Roger Maris hit 60 and never hit more than 39 before or after.

Barry Bonds, had an incredibly lucky season where he hit 70+ home runs, being aided mostly by the juiced baseball, and a random valley in the quality of major league pitching during the early 2000's (fastball velocity has risen almost 2 mph since bonds 70 season pitchers and defenses are unquestionably better.)

Barry Bonds greatest skill is his batting eye, its without question the greatest in the history of baseball, that 70+ home run season and his physical stature put the fear of god into pitchers, and basically nobody ever challenged him again, even as he got older/fatter/slower.

Batting eye/pitch recognition is know in baseball as an old man skill, and because of the fear and perception, Barry was getting worse but pitchers were still pitching him like 70+ home run Barry, they presumed he was an inhuman being aided by magic home run beans, this allowed Barry to leverage the one skill that doesn't age. His impeccable command of the strike zone.

This is my alternative non steroid theory as to why Barry could put up such video game numbers as 38+ years old.

Barry Bonds was uniquely qualified to take advantage of the power spike in 1994.

And that still is a ******** of nonsense but keeping believing that taking substances that make you stronger and change your body doesn't help you hit a ball farther

700

700

Because there is no way that having an additional 80 lbs of muscle would help you hit a ball farther. Especially when as you said you are already one of the best hitter ever.

Griffey didn't cheat.
he couldn't of. or else my entire childhood is ruined

This.

griffey was my all time favorite...but some of the injuries he began to constantly suffer make you wonder. same with nomar :smh:

i think griffeys was more accredited to his playing style. all of his injurys came from his reckless playing style

i want to believe that. and if was breaking or fracturing bones or dislocating shoulders, sure. but the hamstring and tendon injuries. i don't know.

don't get me wrong...im not saying he was for sure using. but as much as i love the guy, it wouldn't surprise me if it came out that he was.

alot of his injurys were bone injurys and his muscle injurys were from tears before.
But like i said before im obviously biased. growing up in seattle kids didn't want to be like Mike, they wanted to be like Griffey

 @ steroids not playing a major part in helping hit home runs.

Of course steroids don't help hand/eye but it damn sure well get a ball thats normally be in the warning tracks into the stands...

And yea Bonds took up cycling on purpose, he knew once got off steroids he would lose the weight so he took up cycling so he would have an excuse for the rapid weight loss.

 at steroids not having any effect on hitting home runs. You're are simplifying something that is complicated.

Do steroids help in hand/eye coordination, swing, etc needed to hit a HR? No. Steroids will not make an terrible athlete into an elite athlete, but if you are already an elite athlete, like Bonds was, it will help you tremendously in other ways.

Barry ain't jacking the power numbers without the help of steroids/HGH/BALCO. Not happening.

Bonds was already a HOF'er IMO, and he got greedy. You're saying whatever he took didn't help in recovery, in dealing with the daily grind of a 162 game season? You're saying it didn't help add 5-10 ft. to his "pop"?

Saying steroids wouldn't help someone like Bond hit for more power is one of the most asinine statements I have read. I am dissapoint OKB.

Then you compare it to cortizone,

Jeebus...

That looks like a 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates version of Barry Bonds. Jesus.

I'm not going to get into the argument of what steroids do/don't do but I am curious for another overlooked aspect...

can someone look up his HR splits for the record breaking year? I.e. - how many were at pac bell and where (RF, LF, CF) versus on the road? If my memory is correct, they gave Bonds some say in the dimensions of the park originally.

The Hall of Fame is such a joke nowadays.  Aside from Olney, Kurkjian, and Stark, the rest of the baseball writers have this holier-than-thou, you have to be perfect to get into the Hall of Fame attitude.  The MLB was happy to look the other way while Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa were bringing in fans and money, but now they want to act like that era never happened

.  Give me a break man, as much as I wish baseball was a clean sport, I'm not gonna act like I wasn't enjoying every second of Bonds' homerun chase.  You have to let those players in the Hall of Fame, if they're gonna set this precedence of not letting PED users in the HOF then they need to go back and make sure absolutely NONE of the players in the HOF were tied to PEDS.  And the **** wasn't invented in 2000, so good luck with that...

This isn't a half thought out thing man, I've looked into this, I've looked at numbers, the statistics, the science. THE EVIDENCE ISN'T THERE.

The benefits of steroids on hitting ability is simply not born out by the numbers or the science

period.

I believe that steroids, PED's can help you recover from injury, stay on the field longer, but actual effect on hitting a baseball? I think whatever improvement it may give you is not significant and IMO not worth the time, or energy or money that basball players pay for them.

Ultimately stimulants, like aderral or greenies are much more impactful to on field performance.
