Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I'm all for diving into the Harry Potter movies in depth once I see Part 2... I've watched all of them in the last three weeks so they're all relatively fresh.

I haven't watched them all again, but I did watch DH Pt 1, Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets in the last two weeks.  I hadn't seen the first two in forever and, of course, I wanted to the last one to be pretty fresh in my mind when I see Pt. 2.

Entertainment Weekly has an HP commemorative edition out that includes an analysis and review of each of the films, except the new one.  Their overall take was that the films in the series got better as it went on, which I pretty much agree with.  Anyway, if you're an HP fan, there's alot of pretty cool stuff in that Entertainment Weekly.  I'm definitely glad I picked it up.

Man I got so busy the last couple of weeks I never got around to finishing it... I'll get that done sooner or later. There's a lot to cover ther,e I think...

And I think Contagion looks nice... Problem with movies like that is they almost always tap the brakes before they really let it hit full speed...

Watched Source Code last night... Um... What the hell was that ending?

The first Harry Potter felt like Phantom Menace. Minus the battles (which you have to wait 4 movies just to get), this is the best parts of Star Wars 1. It was good for what it was. Like...damn. If you should ever watch it again, I promise it's better than you remember it. I only saw it once in theaters 10 years ago and I still remembered some moments and lines perfectly. Some stuff is clumsy, the cg isn't good and the kids can't act for +$!%, but it's inspired. The casting is perfect and you can just feel the energy. And the ending is pretty nice. It makes you want to read all the books. (I haven't...not one)
nerd.gif

But then...Chamber of Secrets. The worst piece of +$!% movie out of all of them. The most mystery-less, magic-less, pace-less, bland, matter of fact, corny, unremarkable, talky, unfocused, unsubtle, brain softening and misguided nothing of a movie. This is the worst parts of Phantom Menace turned into it's own movie, all the way down to it's own Jar Jar Binks. They set up a good amount that would be important for the rest of the series, but in such a boring and bland way, that you just don't care. I barely remembered this and I get why that is now. I get why they changed directors and everything. The last half hour is almost unwatchable.

Prisoner of Azkaban is a beautiful film. It's the only movie of the series that didn't feel like a set of episodes stapled together. It's a full, complete mystery. The first Harry Potter, was new so it was amazing. It had that naive shock to carry it through. This was magical from the jump. It had such a strong style and heart. The mystery and magic came early and often. Every part of it is done so well, the dementors, Sirius, the clues to the mystery, everything. It's a no nonsense, no distraction film. Every little magic and mystery touch got a payoff. Things weren't just there to be there. You really felt like every conversation and part of the movie was working towards the mysteries. And it's a perfect little self-contained Harry Potter mystery.

Over the years I've heard that book people don't like Azkaban, because it cut out so much of the book. But then I hear JK says it captured the spirit of the books the best out of any of the movies. To be honest, it was my favorite out of all of them until I watched the whole series again. Azkaban is great, but has barely anything to do with any of the other movies. The time tuner is gone forever and I got told that Harry thought the stag was his dad, because his dad was an animagus...which they didn't mention once in the movie.
indifferent.gif
(It'd be really nice to know for 7 part 1) If you watched the 1st Harry Potter and skipped to the 4th, you woudn't miss much of anything. Azkaban doesn't really matter in the big picture and that sucks.

Goblet of Fire...is nothing like any of the other movies at all. Goblet's story is great...it's the first time I felt like there was a big community of wizards and not just 5 people, bad guys and furniture. A lot of people love this one, and say it's the best, but to me...they love pieces of it. They just love the tri-wizard competition, Cedric, Krum, the ball. The whole thing felt episodic. I would've LOVED a Goblet of Fire directed by Alfonso Cuaron (directed Azkaban) just to give the film momentum and balance. I don't like the style of the movie, or the new (this movie only) look of the main kids (oh and Cho Chang sucks). Is it bad to say I don't like this one, cuz they gave Harry, Da Vinci Code hair? And then the choppy, checklist pace of the movie. There's no rhythm to the movie and the mystery is a mess. It has moments that are (or at least could've been) pretty great, but after that scene in the graveyard, the end of the movie begs to be mercy killed. They didn't handle the mystery at all. It just kinda spit out and all of the sudden...oh...that happened. I'll give them this, this is the best look Ron got all series, and this is when Emma Watson broke out. I'm sure the people who read the books geeked the @@#$ out when You Know Who showed up, but cinematically...this was pretty flat and then it went on and on for too long (like this review). I want to like this as much as a lot of people do, but nah.

Order of the Phoenix...unless the movie I'm gonna try and go see tonight changes my mind, this is easily the best film of the entire series to me. From beginning to end everything is balance so well. This was the film that converted everyone willing to finally read the books. (I'm illiterate so I didn't) But this really got me close. They style is magnificent. It's right there with Lord of the Rings. Every single grownup gets a moment to shine in this. They gave them all real character. All the side students steal a little moment here and there. It all flows so well, even if it's not obvious where they're going with it and how this leads off of Goblet of Fire. The only knock on it I really have is that, this is a pretty joyless movie. They don't break their tone much at all.

Cho Chang is ok. I remember hearing when the last book dropped that Harry gets with Ginny in the end.
eyes.gif
Looking at it from the movies...dude has no chemistry with that actress, and just about none with Cho Chang...but then on the flip he's got crazy chemistry with Hermione, more than Ron easy, and a ton with Luna. Kinda makes me wish they'd be bold and change the movie from the book, but it's w.e. Not following the book is why they fired Cuaron. The movies make more money when they're just there to remind people of what they read.

Half-Blood Prince...the problem with this one is that after all the momentum of the 5th one, this just puts everything on pause and sits on its hands. People who will never read or watch Harry Potter know what happens at the end of this one. And hell, they might not even know which film this happens in, but about 5 minutes in it's really obvious. And then on top of that the entire movie is about Draco, Snape and Dumbledore with main characters acting like bit players. Oh wait no...the lst half hour is that, but the rest isn't. There's no sense mystery in this. There's no new big bad, it's all the same people dicking around with Voldemort and the Death Eaters chilling...somewhere. The whole point of this movie then has to be flashbacks of Tom Riddle. They're the only parts with real life in them, and the first doesn't come until almost an hour into the movie.
indifferent.gif
This is the CW does Harry Potter. So much time is wasted on who likes who that you lose all the edge and tension that Phoenix had. The 2 scenes at the Weasley house were really nice though.

But still, this film is 2 1/2 hours long and about 5 or 10 minutes of it are really worth anything. This didn't need to exist and if it did, it needed to be a lot more creative with it's storytelling. This movie should've been Godfather Part II style. It should've been part the rise of Tom Riddle, part Dumbledore's swan song and part an Ocean's 11 style buildup of Draco to the killing (even though I don't think he can act well enough to pull it off). Instead, those are little roadbumps for Degrassi: Hogwarts. Those scenes are just the same scene rinsed and repeated. We spend more time with that new potions teacher for the first 2 hours. There are 2 stupid mysteries, one gets solved by just finding out what something is called, the other...there were t-shirts with the big twist on them years ago. There's nothing to this movie, but it's all very well shot and acted? It should've been like The Departed, because they had every piece they needed to do it. Instead it just feels like 2 hours of deleted scenes. I remember when I found out that they spent a quarter of a billion on it kinda made me mad. Two big cg scenes, one in the beginning and end looked awesome...but they didn't mean anything on some Transformers +$!%. That said...the last 20 minutes even though they drag in a weird way, are good for what they are. Emma Watson grew up, she and Gary Oldman are the best things in these movies. I'll just never be watching this movie again.

I'll writeup 7 part 1 in a little.

No offense, but I pretty much disagree with your take on everything other than the Sorceror's Stone and Half-Blood Prince.

I just don't know if I want to do a write-up even though, because I doubt anyone would care to read all these Harry Potter consecutively.

Nice write up Blood Type, I'm gonna read the books first before watching the films so you probably won't hear my input on this series for about a year but nonetheless, nice to finally know what the hell this damn thing was about.

And JPZ, if you've got the time, maybe you could just do an expedited version. Just hit the main points you disagree with Blood Type on and what you liked.

Okay.

FYI... CP add Adjustment Bureau and Battle: LA to my watched list. Thanks.

MrO... (and I've read the books)

You hit the nail on the head with the Sorceror's Stone... I can even recall J.K. Rowling coming out and being absolutely amazed after being on the set of the first film because her and Columbus had the EXACT same vision of what Hogwarts was and what it represented. I thought they did a great job foreshadowing a Malfoy/Harry rivalry, a Hagrid/Harry relationship, among other things. This was a "set the tone" movie... and I thought Columbus did a tremendous job. That's really all I'll say, because you pretty much reiterated my thoughts on this one.

As for the Chamber of Secrets, I couldn't disagree more. The basilisk, Dobby, Kenneth Branagh as Lockhart (same guy that directed Thor) are all great, the scene where Potter and Malfoy are chasing the snitch is extremely well done, and the visual we were given of the actual chamber is beautiful (I love the statue of Salazar Slytherin, absolutely love it). I can't really grasp your direction when you say this movie was dull, boring, and magic-less.... looking back it really fits into the entire series well and a lot is derived from it in later books/movies. The basilisk fang in Deathly Hallows: Part II, the diary in Half-Blood Prince, etc.

The Prisoner of Azkaban, I really disliked it and thought it was the only book/movie that didn't "fit". Cool, a guy named Sirius Black is chasing Harry around... are we really supposed to think this guy is going to catch Harry and kill him? Then what has Voldemort been about? Doesn't make sense. It's really the only one that didn't include a piece of the Voldemort puzzle. Yeah, they were tiny things that alluded to Voldemort, but nothing groundbreaking whatsoever and nothing that would make you lost if you hadn't seen the film. I've never liked David Thewlis as the pick for Professor Lupin... I've always felt like whoever they casted would need to have an incredible emotional pull with Harry and while he tries, I never believe it with him.

The Goblet of Fire, featured the Triwizard Tournament, something I thought would be extremely hard to pull of in a film but David Yates absolutely killed it. Featured the return of Voldemort in that chilling/foggy cemetary scene, more props to Yates. Love how Voldemort uses the Tournament as a way to get to Harry, and unless you've read the books you really have no clue or inklings of this in the movie until it actually happens. Thought the three participants, Krum/Fleur/Cedric all had ideal actors/actresses. My only complaint I guess is that I wish we could have seen some footage from the Quidditch World Cup game, and the hair.... oh god the hair
laugh.gif

The Order of the Phoenix, I'm right there with you on it being joyless, but I hated the casting of Umbridge, personality was right but the look was wrong. My only bright spots of this film are Gary Oldman, and the battle scene between Dumbledore and Voldemort at the end. Other than that, just... no. This movie was almost unwatchable until halfway through, and even then I can only just tolerate it. The scenes involving Dumbledore's Army were sub-par. I thought Sirius' death could have been done better... him falling into that wispy cloudish thing was

Weekly Movie watch and review

We should all do our ratings on a scale of 10.  That way after each movie, we'll get a cumulative score for each movie based off the same numbers.  You can go 8.4/10, or a simple 6/10 or 6.6/10, whatever.

ALL ratings must be on a  /10 scale.
