Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Shawshank is great. I'm not a huge Robbins fan either, but he's excellent in that. Probably his best performance that I've seen, with Bull Durham second. I can't imagine who likes movies watching that and not liking it at all.

I don't think there's a movie that I just flat out won't watch. But I've never seen any of the Saw movies and have no real desire to. Maybe that's my Shawahank.

lol the movie with danny masterson and mekhi phifer Puff Puff Pass got me to watch shawshank. dudes checked into a drug rehab to watch 24 hour shawshank redemption marathon

Watched all seven seasons.. anyways I checked this out at the library today

 @ that fool trying to compare not watching Shawshank to his wife not watching Firefly. One of these things are not like the other but I guess that's the crime of ignorance.

I really can't think of one film I haven't watched it's so much not on my radar that I can't just have it come to mind. Plenty classics I haven't seen yet. Nothing I'm avoiding really unless I feel in my heart it's trash.

Trill, why you ain't get in on Avengers? You watch any of the other comics, Iron Man, Cap, Thor, etc? Or just ignore the genre altogether?
i have watched both iron mans, captain america, and the dark knight 3..

with the avengers i felt like people were telling me i had to watch and i had to like it too, if that makes any sense.

that goes for avatar too.
If you liked Iron Man 2, you should like Avengers.

I didn't like Iron Man 2 or Thor and I still liked Avengers.

I haven't watched Capt. America since my brother said it sucked.
shawshank's a classic. imagine a non challeneged forrest gump in prison with a fed up morgan freeman. a lot of despair and incapability of coping with change is presented throughout. really one of my favorite movies because of how easy it is to remember and recall. lots of images that stick to you in different ways.
When you put it like that....

One day. Not anytime soon, though. Bucket list.

I was like you.

Then I saw a family guy episode that parodied the entire movie.

After having so much spoiled for me, I was like damn I might as well watch it now.

I watched it and 30 minutes in, I was like DAMN, this is a good *** movie!

You're doing yourself another disservice.

That's what I figured. I want to check out the first one and probably stop there.

I'd say even the second isn't bad. The thing is, they don't really do anything different after the second film. There's a very strict formula that they stick to from then on though. From 3-7, nothing changes.

I wasn't sure how inventive NBC would get with Hannibal given it's about serial killers & dead bodies but this looks promising for a network show. I really like the casting of Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal & Laurence Fishburne as Special Agent Jack Crawford. I think it automatically gives the show some heft/gravitas. Not sure about Hugh Dancy as Will Graham. He has a decent filmography. Here's the newest trailer.

Also, I think Ang Lee (Hulk aside, which wasn't that bad) is an under appreciated director. His next project will be directing the pilot episode of a show called Tyrant on FX.

...Lee will make his TV directorial debut on FX, helming the pilot episode of "Tyrant." The project, which is highly expected to be greenlit without having even shot a frame of footage yet, is from "Homeland" executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Craig Wright of "Six Feet Under" fame, and tells the story of an average American family, somehow becoming involved with the turbulent happenings in the Middle East. Hmm. It might seem like an odd move for Lee, but after spending a couple of years on the ambitious and intensive "Life Of Pi," this might be a good palate cleanser and a way to dive back into the basic mechanics of directing without any extra fuss...

The networks must have serial killer fever or maybe it's a season. Should I expect CBS and ABC to have shows about two more made up serial killers? or go realistic and do one about Dahmer?

I know technically Dexter is that show in a sense but ever since I saw Suspect Zero I thought if done right and much better than the movie it could work as a great tv series.

That movie actually reminds me of Frailty a bit but obviously that's much better with it's premise and twist in the end.

If Christian Bale & Ridley Scott team up for Scott's Moses pic? :wow:

Christian Bale Courted for Ridley Scott’s Moses Epic EXODUS

Let the battle of the Moses epics begin! Two high profile films about the Biblical character have been in development for the past year or so—one at Warner Bros. with Steven Spielberg flirting with the director’s chair, and one at Fox that has Ridley Scott attached to direct. Yesterday, Warner Bros.’ film Gods and Kings was dealt a blow when Spielberg finally left the project, and now it appears that Fox is ramping things up on Exodus as Scott is looking to make the pic his next film after he completes post-production on The Counselor. The Gladiator filmmaker has taken a big step forward towards production, as he and Fox are apparently courting Christian Bale to tackle the Moses role. Hit the jump for more.

Per Deadline, Fox is “putting a rush” on Exodus and the studio and Scott are now looking to nab Christian Bale as their star. No deals have been made and the report cautions that this isn’t etched in stone, but Bale would certainly be a fascinating choice to play Moses in a Ridley Scott-helmed epic.

Bale hasn’t signed on to any big-budget films since last year’s The Dark Knight Rises, opting instead to take on interesting dramatic roles in Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace and two Terrence Malick films, also signing on to star in the survival drama Everest. He’s currently shooting David O. Russell’s untitled ABSCAM movie with a stellar ensemble cast, but I’d be very curious to see his iteration of Moses. This isn’t the first time Bale has flirted with a Biblical epic, as he was considered for the lead in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah that eventually went to Russell Crowe.

Exodus most recently became a priority when a rewrite of the script by Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) came in, prompting Scott to consider this his next project. Warner Bros. is still trying to move forward with its own Moses pic in the wake of Spielberg’s exit, as they’re now looking at Ang Lee to step in and take the helm. Lee hasn’t taken a formal meeting yet and he’s poised to shoot the pilot for the FX series Tyrant this summer, so he likely wouldn’t be able to devote his full attention to the production until this fall. Look for more news on the dueling Moses films soon as both studios race to have their epic in theaters first.

If you’re in need of a refresher on the life of Moses, I highly suggest you check out Brendan’s amusing timeline of events right here.

I'll get to it eventually.

Hannibal's like a must-watch for me. Bryan Fuller is making it. Dude is a tv genius, I'll check anything he's doing.

FX has an Ang Lee show coming? Damn.
They're gonna lap AMC once Breaking Bad is over.

Finished watching those indies...

Silver Linings

Safety Not Guaranteed
Perks

Ruby Sparks
Celeste
Liberal Arts
- Ruby was an interesting premise
- Celeste made a decent effort to be different
- Liberal Arts... if you have a problem with thirty something white people complaining about their life, then you'll hate it. Because that's not what it is completely, but people could easily interpret it as that. Elizabeth Olsen is absurdly charming and adorable so that makes it a must watch.

Dead on.

Really? Ruby?....Ruby, Ruby, Ruby.

I'll give this much, After Silver Linings, that "wall" scene in Ruby Sparks was the most memorable thing from of all of those for me.

It's just...it's a hook without a movie. I mean, it was born out of a such an amazing idea for a film. Just hearing the idea was enough to know you had to see it: the deconstruction of the manic pixie dream girl.

I loved that idea. A one-hit wonder writer, who's having trouble with his followup novel, literally dreams up the perfect manic pixie girl...and then he gets so invested in this book and this dream, that she comes to life. Like...that's should be a thinking man's Weird Science, right? She changes on his whims, with every word he types. And it should be perfect, but she feels her own plot holes and illogical shortcomings, becomes self-aware and turns the mirror back on the what type of person would want her to exist...like this. Like, it should speak on the condescension and belittling of women, and sorta...The Graduate style...well what do you do once you've got what you wanted?

I love it. The idea. And that'll have to be good enough, because outside of the idea and one image, it's a really forgettable, dime a dozen kinda indie movie. I get saying it's only behind Silver Linings if you love the idea that much. And the girl is not bad.

But Paul Dano >D You never could've told me he'd have the biggest career out of everyone in Girl Next Door. It's a Kaufman film that never was. It reminds me so much of Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine and Synecdoche, NY...in that one basic core idea.

But it just kinda rolls outta bed, crawls around and then calls it a wrap...Paul Dano as the nice guy lead is just whatever. He had that one good scene at the party, but for the most part he's as ehhhh in the role as that main kid from Perks. Fine for what it is, but you really could've got something special outta someone else. And Ruby is just any girl.

I mean, I'd put Youth in Revolt over this.

Very well said.

The idea alone made me like the movie .. But the execution made me forget it.

I've been very disappointed with the roles dano chose after little miss sunshine and there will be blood.

Ben foster is a good actor who doesn't get enough good roles.

Read that the mallick movie with Ben affleck was horrible. Which is what I expected. Those two seemed like oil and water to me. Bale has more of a shot, but I don't think he's done anything near as good as badlands. I still need to force myself to sit through the thin red line and "tree" but ehhh

I think I there was an interview about how terrible the experience was for Affleck.
That's when I figured I shouldn't expect anything.

I can see that. Badlands is like...iconic to me. I really, really liked The New World and Tree of Life though. Like, I could honestly watch a 4-hr cut of Tree. One of my favs from 2011. But Thin Red Line...I think I started and stopped that movie 30 times since high school. I don't think I'll ever be in the mood to sit through that.

Fun fact (that I never checked if it was true). I watched Badlands and realized it has the same score as True Romance...weebey'd and realized...oh, these are the same movie...Quentin, you son of a *****.
