Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

On Synecdoche... Buckle up. Still the most mind-numbing movie I've ever watched. Haven't been able to finish it a second time. Too much.
At first I was gonna gush over how much I loved the movie...til I realized, it's been permanently on my 'must watch again ASAP' list ever since it came out, and I don't see that changing any time soon. :smh:

It's...a lot. Just...a hell of a lot to take in, brilliantly. It's too deep and meaningful for it's own rewatchability.

is it anything like Cloud Atlas?

or not at all

I brought up Bates Motel but I didn't bother watching cuz it is on A&E. Would've took me too long to figure out what channel that is on my tv anyways  there's just certain networks I'm not gonna watch like TLC. As far as I'm concerned that was a group of R&B singers I want to bang. Like I've only heard of Lifetime movies, I've never sat down and actually watched one start to finish. I wanna smash Jennifer Love Hewitt but I aint watching that prostitute show she has and that just sounds dumb typing that but I'm not watching it

Even without watching though, I wouldn't have passed on Bates Motel just cuz it's in the category of prequel. The remake doesn't hold a candle to the OG so for me this new incarnation is so far removed from the OG that it can feel fresh if done right and it'd get some benefit of the doubt based on how good the OG was/is.

I see where you're coming from. And I'm gonna fight the urge to write a wall, cuz I'll be damned if those aren't two really comparable movies.
But yeah...one movie works, builds towards a lot, and gets deeper and deeper into the motivations, psychology and lives through time of it's characters.

The other movie is just real elaborate for the sake of being, fake hustles you into thinking it's a really reaching for strong meaning, but it's not...The ambitious thing is how Cloud Atlas was technically made. What it's trying to say isn't complicated or really ambitious at all. And there are moments of real feeling, when it comes together and works, but so damn much of the movie is just letting it all happen and hoping something special comes in the end, that they're really few and far between. It's an amazing movie, because it's pretty smooth and watchable, when it shouldn't be. The transitions and little connections are...neat? It's unamazing, because there's so much distracting crap everywhere that's too cutesy, or tacky, or forced that they make you roll your eyes and not invest in almost any of it really.

But I do wanna read the book and maybe watch it again?

What's the Ruby .gif for? :nerd:

And this Cloud Atlas intrigues me now.

But yeah, Synecdoche is so daunting/taxing. If you're going to watch it, you have to commit to it. I have tried revisiting three of four times, and after maybe eight minutes, I give up taking it in and thinking about what I know is coming and put on Knocked Up or some !+%* to attempt to clear my head.

Why does it seem like the same people are getting major roles in hollywood? I understand its obvious but like..how cant actors from shows like Entourage, Wire, etc...why doesnt the main characters on major shows get major movie deals?

Tight casted? Probably

Like Jeremy Piven is doing a tv show on PBS. Great show but nobody knows about it..wtf

Well 1st off its pbs, there's barely any promo for anything on that network. Their most popular show is Downton Abbey and that I know of through word of mouth.

As for the same actors thing. Actors are a dime a dozen. Great actors don't always have the right connections and can be hard to come by with what they choose to do. Popular actors are in demand. Popular and great actors are as mall pool. What they say about Hollywood is pretty much true. It aint just your talent that'll get you far. It isn't as simple as main character on great show gets major movie roles. Most times a director has to really like their work and feel they fit w/e role they have in mind to see that jump.

Piven has been in plenty movies though it's just his rep doesn't have title star or strong lead in it. Not that I doubt he couldn't carry a movie it's just he'd have to pursue that and convince in auditions. In those situations going out of your lane an actor is basically starting from scratch building their portfolio again to be taken seriously for those roles.

Probably hurts if you're not a good looking white male too.

Good post...repped

I'm just gonna use Entourage as en example, but dudes like Grenier..I wanna know why he doesnt get into roles. I know dude is some hippie, all about living green but man..Its wierd. I mean, Turtle has been the most successful in terms of movies since the show..even though I always thought he was the best actor on Entourage behind Ari.

Just annoying when you see box office hits with the same stars. Whalberg is my dude but cmon man. Dude is in every role now. Same with Dwayne Johnson, Brad Cooper, etc.

But i guess its better than a bunch of actors who completely suck but are fresh faces.

The race thing is def starting to show face in my reality. It took me years to finally realize how white dominated the industry is.

Turtle? Hasn't he just been playing the same character he always has? White guy trying to he black?

Piven has had a variety of roles, as has Grenier.

The bigger issue is not so much type casting, but getting out of television. White or black.

You tell me a great TV show that really boosted someones film career, and I'll be surprised.

Yeah sometimes a big film actor will jump into a tv show for a season or two, but not the other way around.

What's the best Michael C. Hall film you've seen? Did it make tons of money? Or what about Jamea Gandolfini? Anyone from The Wire, Oz, Madmen, or Breaking Bad? Any leading roles of critically and commercially successful films? Not so much.

But thats my issue/question, why is it so difficult for major tv actors who doing TV series to become major movie actors.

before recently, popular actors doing TV roles was like a death sentence. It wasn't until recently that your seeing more actors who do movies are going into television.

I guess when I meant Turtle being the moat successful was he's been in a few blockbuster hits since the show.

Idk, you guys have answered my questions, thanks. Its just Im just now starting to divide TV actors as opposed to Movie actors.

Its like, 99% of actors jump into tv to start up there career, but its a risky move if you ever want to become a star movie actor. Its almost as if just being castes as an extra for a bit of time in a movie will help more.

But look at a dude like Taylor Kitich (sp?) yeah he kinda sucks as an actor and his movies showed, but he went from
tv star to movie star pretty quick.

Wow. Ummm this has now been very hyped up for me. Was just gonna watch on a laptop because I'm not gonna be home a few days. But Im just gonna wait now

So Cloud Atlas was dope or not. I saw it in theaters and left very confused.

Its definitely worth seeing though.

I think

Forgot to mention I saw Jackie brown. Besides having a strong woman as a protagonist, I didn't find anything special about this movie. A true waste of Deniro. Didn't feel much like a QT movie. Kind of bland.

Not terrible by any means. But I hoped I would be able to look back and appreciate it more and I didn't. Pretty boring. But his worst movie is still good enough to watch multiple times.

Same thing with me lmao, saw it at a theater and I didn't know what to think. Even after going home and reading about it, I was still confused as *****

Went to see The Call last Saturday. Wasn't expecting much but it was decent. My girl loved it ( she likes law&order type suspense lol). Was entertaining, so I'm not really gonna critique it too much.

Sidenote: Has anyone been to a CINEBISTRO theater. Kinda pricey but my girl & I cant go to any other theater anymore. Dinner & a movie in one!

Because they've been dubbed TV actors for one.

Second - no one on Entourage can carry a film themselves

and it's "type cast"

Michael Kenneth Williams "Omar" from the wire is getting a ton of roles but he has a personality and aura about him to fit roles,so to is Idris Elba who is the star of the upcoming mega blockbuster Pacific Rim, no one else on the show could standout

Adrien is a horrible actor. He sucks. He was the worst actor on Entourage and if you ever watched him in the BS rom coms he was cast in early on you'd understand why no one wants to give him a serious role.

Wahlberg is established, Rock is a mega star based on his physique and reputation and Bradley Cooper is a star now with Hangover success and being Oscar nominated.

You can't bring these guys into a conversation with no names from HBO shows. You need to understand there is a major difference between being a fan of a tv show and liking a character and thinking that actor behind the character can be a anchor for a major motion picture.

I wouldn't say Adrian is a no name but I see where your coming from. I have seen turtle in more movies then Any other cast member besides maybe piven. Regardless still one of my fav shows. I don't see how a person could hate it

Mcnutty has been in big roles

I think bubble could carry an indie movie

The wire actually had some damn good actors. Daniels and lester could do well in a movie. Wasnt lester the star in that new spike movie?

Dominic West is a TERRIBLE movie actor. He was in John Carter, and in Punisher: Warzone as Jigsaw.

He also had a cameo in Power Rangers as a security guard who turned into Ivan Ooze.

He wasn't that bad in 300 though.

Andre Royo (Bubbs) has been in plenty of Indie movies. He starred in one where he was a writer that was trying to court Sonja Sohn (Greggs). It was ******g terrible

Wahlberg could act circles around Vinnie Chase... and he's not exactly known for being a great actor.

Besides talent, you have marketability, and connections. You know the audience you're going after when you cast The Rock as your lead. And you know what he's going to give you.

Then you have established relationships like Wahlberg and David O. Russell. He's been in three of his movies and they obviously trust and work well with one another. That alone will be huge for actors.

To be fair... John Carter and Punisher: Warzone weren't exactly going to win any awards for writing. I'm pretty sure you can put DeNiro and Denzel in those roles and they'd be pretty bad.

Watching Miller's Crossing for the first time.

Watched The Bourne Ultimatum last night for the first time.

Watched the Hobbit recently and thought it was pretty decent, just hate the fact they do these prequels so late after the "original" movies drop. This spun me to watch LOTR and while I enjoy em, they have a lot of filler in them (Or it could be bc I have the extended editions at 4hrs long)
