Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I was watching the original 1980s Superman with Christopher Reeve last night on cable. Certain things about it probably can be considered corny/cheesy by today's standards, but overall its really a pretty good movie. Gene Hackman is great as Lex Luthor. And Reeve, who I don't consider to have been a great actor, does a very solid job as Superman/Clark Kent.

The Score man. When he first appears to grab the helicopter, that's just good ol fashion cinema right there.

Why the folks were all standing on the sidewalk watching a helicppter drop towards them with no knowledge of anyone being able to actually stop that helicopter from ending their lives in the next 5 seconds, that's just good ol fashion cinema right there too.

Finally seent Olympus Has Fallen

I'm usually a sucker for these types of movies. I was left kinda disappointed

That polite is perfect for a great Wes Anderson movie.

Jonny depp is a ******g idiot.

No idea why he dropped out

Never a huge boyz fan. Like it. Has epic moments. Don't love it. I never thought it was in the same league as menace
I wouldn't say it ain't in the same league, just different goals and different style.

I think artistically Boyz has a lot more to say than Menace. It's noble. It's better written. It has a deeper story to tell and picture to paint. Boyz feels like a slower 80s film, where the people who made it out came back to make sense of where they came from. Just the posture and the perspective of the film sorta hovers about it all. It tries to send you a message at every turn. You could almost call it preachy.

Menace, though...Menace lives in it. That is a purely 90s movie and damn near everything about it is iconic. It's not about the high-minded survivors, taking a clear look at their environment. It just shows you a collection of ****** up tales and individuals from the inner city. And all of them were memorable as hell. And the movie itself is just constantly taking shots at you. It's raw as hell like that.

Menace isn't trying to say we gotta do better like Boyz is. It's saying **** you, this is how it is for us. Good luck.

Why? What didn't you like?
I wouldn't characterize it as me not liking it. It just wasn't as fulfilling or enough over the top, badassness in this movie like I thought there would from Butler's character.

Plus the whole build up and attack with how the government and military officials just seemed forced and kinda dumb (although I certainly wasn't expecting a smart movie).

Going into this movie, I was expecting patriotism, explosions (which there were), and just a plethora of gun violence and a one man wrecking crew ******g **** up. Granted Butler's character did **** **** up, but just not in the 'explosive' way I thought he would. It was just rather a slow paced movie IMO

Sounds like you expected it to be more of a popcorn flick than it ended up being. I've heard so many opinions about this movie I figure it'll be hard for me to have my own when I see it. :\

Those are awesome. I don't know the McAvoy/Keira pic tho.
Atonement
NOW that is my guilty pleasure movie, love this movie!

It definitely falls into that popcorn flick category, but IMO just doesn't perform to well

hey guys if any of you seen gi joe lemme know how good it is without spoiling it. im pumped to go see it saturday lol

if you guys want to watch a good documentary check out side by side, its all about how shooting on film is now becoming obsolete.
Highly recommend Side by Side

If you're unaware of the debate between film vs. digital, this is a great documentary to bring you up to speed and offer a pretty fair representation of both sides. Some brilliant points made about the experience of movies, the democratization of filmmaking, the future of movies and what the format transition means to everyone.
Side by Side was really good. I finally understand why everyone's been throwing their flag up for one side or the other the last few years. And David Fincher has great timing with his f-bombs.

Go ahead, Keanu. :smokin

Watched Searching for Sugarman too, and that was really good for what it was too.

I wish I would've watched it when I first heard about it, though. Cuz honestly...this is a 20 minute story, fluffed up and dragged out. And don't get me wrong, it's a pretty amazing story. It makes you love music in general. It makes you appreciate the poetry of good music and soul of the artist. It's just...anyone who watched the Oscars and vaguely read the articles about the story, has kinda already seen the whole thing. I maybe would've loved this if I didn't really know what it was, how it ends or that it won the Oscar.

His music was damn good though. 'Sugar Man' stuck in my head.

I've already told a couple of people who are like me and enjoy documentaries to check our Side by Side. It's good enough for even people who aren't interested in film history to enjoy it IMO.

I'm on a big documentary kick lately. Amazon Prime definitely offers a good selection. After these ball games tonight I'm gonna check out Man On Wire I believe. Never seen but always wanted to!

I watched Fat Head this evening and was impressed with all the stuff dude threw back into Super Size Me's face. Interesting for sure.

That probably won't get it changed. It's been discussed, OP hasn't changed his mind. Just get used to it.

It was discussed when the thread was moved and it was brought up again recently by me, the OP doesn't want to change it and that's really that.

Anyway, in today's "Anna Kendrick is awesome" contribution..

Anna Kendrick joins a K-Pop group

I get the initial recoil... they spent an entire season developing and building the cast and stories. We get to know everyone, how things work, then bam... they switch it to the docks. People thought it was slower, thought the characters were less interesting, and it's pretty radical for a show to change the focus so abruptly, but when you look at it as a whole, it's brilliant.

From Alan Sepinwall's book
It's the moment when The Wire went from a great crime novel that you shelve in the mystery section to a work of enduring literature. It's the point when you recognize that this isn't a show about cops and drug dealers, but a much broader look at the death of an American city
I'm in the middle of rewatching season 1 and I shouldn't have started up right now because of Game of Thrones and Mad Men coming back, but I'm sure I'll keep on going. Reading this book has made me want to rewatch all these great shows.
