Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I think the Storm Shadow thing was them being just like the cartoon. They bring in and out the different combo matches of characters as they want. For instance I'm positive Destro will be in the next one, Scarlett and Baroness could come back, same as someone from the Joes side. :nerd:

I hear ya on the bit of a letdown, but it was still an upgrade over 1. And it should build into a solid 3. We'll see.

I hope 3 is longer.

i dont know if i want a transformers/gi joe movie like the producer is interested in doing. would be funny seeing rock and marky mark reunite

baroness should be the first character they bring back lol

just saw two movies today. gremlins and 48 hours. both had a young mike from breaking bad playing a cop

It seemed like an interesting concept at first, but then I thought about it for like another minute and realized that its pretty ridiculously far-fetched. Just a horror movie that's trying to be high concept. I'll probably pass.

Are you guys discussing Carrie? Because I mean, it's a remake...

I saw the trailer for it during Evil Dead (which I'll elaborate more on in a separate post), and I felt like I saw the entire film.

That's a terrible remark for a film.

Literally every key scene from the original Carrie, you see in the remakes' trailer. They could be throwing in more and just showing you what you know, but I thought it was incredibly silly.

I LOVE Chloe Moretz, and I don't doubt that I'll enjoy it, but I just felt like they showed the entire movie.

1) She is abused by her mother, and a social outcast.
2) She finds out she has telekinesis and can control objects with her mind.
3) She plays with her powers, making her a bit more comfortable.
4) She finds a date for prom, mom doesn't want her to go.
5) She gets a prank pulled on her, she goes nuts.
6) She goes on a rampage.

If all we get is #7, and that's it, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. You could've waited till the actual movie to show it all to me, but people are actually believing that this is a new concept? Yeesh.

But isn't the entire plot already known? I get the complaint, but it's not exactly an original movie.

But isn't the entire plot already known? I get the complaint, but it's not exactly an original movie.

I mean, yes and no.

I just felt like they were making a Greatest Hits trailer using a new cast, you know what I mean?

You can do a remake without giving away pretty much everything that happens in the film.

Not a whole lot happens in the original Carrie, and I just felt that they left nothing for the movie.

The original is a great take on a psychological relationship, and while I don't remember seeing the original trailer for Carrie, I'm sure that not this much was given away.

I felt like Evil Dead did it so much better. I'll get to that in another post, but in the trailer they tease you with some of the things that you remember from the original film, but the film is so much more. I know that I'm not giving Carrie a fair-shake, since it's not even out yet, but I feel like especially when you're story is going to be so narrow on what you can be flexible with in terms of changing what happened from original-to-remake, that they just show too much.

That said, we'll just have to wait and see how it comes together.

Yea...this on the other hand. :smokin

Ethan Hawke, to me, has great taste. His films might not always turn out great, but he's always on point in them, and you can see the seeds of inspiration that he gravitated towards. He doesn't make boring or rundown movies. Always something interesting going on.

I saw the trailer for The Purge yesterday while I was on YouTube. I was about to skip, but I saw something about it earlier in the day, so I just watched it.

Damn. This looks great.

I agree, Ethan Hawke career hasn't been about the dollars recently. Maybe he just isn't as popular as he once was, but the films he's been doing recently, I don't think you'd see him do 10 years ago.

I thought he was great in Sinister, and really appreciated that he took a chance with Daybreakers, and this looks just as interesting as Sinister IMO.

I'll check it out just because he's in it and I like the premise.

It reminds me of a larger scale version of The Strangers, that one starring Liv Tyler.

I think his review database is down (likely because of overload), but I want to go back and read Ebert's reviews for some of my favorite movies.. or well reviewed movies in recent memory.

Man, when you can, do it. There was a stretch about a year ago where I'd just sit there and browse some of his older reviews from the 70s and 80s. His writings really still are contemporary, 30, even 40 years later. As many have stated, you may not agree with some of his reviews, but he brings the same integrity from the beginning of his career until the end. It's a shame that his very last review was The Host. That was the last one I saw on his site when I checked a few days ago, and unless they publish something he had previously written, that's his last film. :frown:

I wasn't sure how to feel about Hannibal.

I haven't watched American Horror Story so correct me if I'm wrong, but I felt like they were just borrowing some vibes from them.

I enjoyed watching it, but I just felt like it was a bit too over-the-top.

From the two versions of Manhunter/Red Dragon, I never got the idea that Will Graham was so mentally and emotionally deprived and insane as they are making him out to be in the first episode. It just seemed so out of character.

Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) seems like an odd casting as well. He just seems slightly too charismatic compared to how he was played in Silence of the Lambs.

Mads Mikkelsen though... :pimp: He's great. I like that they're showing that he's not completely inhuman, just a mad cannibal. That's kind of how he was played in Hannibal (the film). I felt like they took away all of the human characteristics from Silence of the Lambs, and just made it a Hollywood film.

The pilot was pretty good, but I'm just intrigued to see where they go. I wonder if they'll ever introduce other villains from the other films, like Mason Verger, Francis Dollarhyde, or Jame Gumb.

Bates Motel has me watching, and it's only because of Vera and the kid. I really buy their chemistry. But not the brother, not the local sheriffs, especially not the teen kids, but the two of them I can dig. The girl with Cystic fibrosis seems alright, but other than that, it's not that great, but I'll keep watching.

So yeah, just saw Prometheus. I think I got it but am I suppose to be missing something about the plot and mystery?

They never explain why they made humans and they don't explain why they planned on killing them all right? Not sure on the motive of the robot either for what it did or even what it said to the alien in the end. As far as the ending ending that's w/e.

All in all movie was good. I had to laugh at myself half way through when I kept asking where is Guy Pearce at?

Oh and the dumbest part had to be trying to out run the length of the ship falling instead of the width of it. Like how dumb can one be?

I think that quote from Lawdog was in reference to the Purge trailer, not Carrie.

Oh, well, The Purge looks awesome, .

You gotta be able to suspend your disbelief when you're watching films.

I know I ain't gotta explain that to you though, just in reference to him.

There are very few horror/thriller films where you can actually sit there and say, "Well, maybe this could happen."

I think Lawrence is going to have an insane career.

I don't know if Watson will work solid. She reminds me of Portman, being interested in school and such. She's great, but I see her wanting to do things outside of acting. Hope I'm wrong.

The only thing stopping Lawrence is her own desire and possible fatigue. Being so young and all...

She can do action, can do drama, and has been funny enough in interviews to say she'd do well in lighter films or comedies. For as long as she wants she'll be an elite actress. Another strong acting performance and she'll rack up Best Actress nominees automatically.

I wasggoing to mention it earlier, but I'm disappointed in Johansson's career. Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies and she's really talented, but her roles don't always reflect that. I wanted her to start dominating roles like Lawrence did in SLP because she has that same kind of talent. She's still crazy young so I'm not giving up hope, but still.. Maybe she needs a certain role to bring out the best in her, but I still expected bigger and better as of now.

Sherry Palmer must DIE!!!!!!
 You taking me back to hs. That was the word every Tuesday morning.

And Scarlett's a good actress, but it's like we were saying before, she's one of those 'more charming movie star than great actors.' She plays different takes on ScarJo in most of her movies. Lawrence, though, I think is a great actress with a good amount of range at a really young age.

i think the most difficult part was getting out of the harry potter saga of her career

and she came out of it unscathed.let the record show i consider her a average white

girl (of course i'd demolish her , im a pig and thats besides the point) but her cult like

following is crazy(i.e the niketalk thread in general) and the memes galore of her.

in jennifer lawrences case , she couldnt be hotter at the moment if she tried , she's

absalutely on fire right now, but history tells us all that goes up , must come down.

and she couldnt be any higher than she is right now(...it also tells us theres a new

"it" girl every 2 or so years) .....so lets say her next non hunger games movie gets

lets than stellar reviews...and is one of those "comes and goes" movies that hollywood

pumps out by the dozen...does that affect her?

also we factor in that white girls age by 2 years when they hit 27 ....all 3 are vulnerable lmao

she interviews really well , i think if anne hathaway didnt come across so goal oriented and snarky/snobby she could be way bigger than she is now

You're really selling her short.

I don't think she's any actress. I mean, there have been plenty of IT girls, and if all she had on her was Hunger Games and First Class, then I see where you're coming at. And if it was just Silver Linings Playbook, I could see where you're coming from. But when you take them all together...and then add on Winter's Bone. I mean, Hunger Games is almost a nothing movie. It has the book hype for sure, but she rose above. She stole every scene she was in with more than just charm. Most of those actresses, it's charm. It's playing different versions of themselves. But there's real talent there with her.

If she wasn't so great in interviews, she'd still be a well regarded actress.

And yeah, as far as charm goes, I don't think I can remember an actress as charming in a long time. Most of the time it's just, damn that chick's crazy good looking, and oh...she has a personality too.

The closest is Julia Roberts, but she was never as talented as Jennifer Lawrence. Just super charming.

So, my experience with Evil Dead was pretty bad.

Not because of the movie itself, but because of my theater. I wanted to watch it during an early AM showing yesterday, but my girl wanted to go with a couple of her friends, one of which couldn't make it until a night-show. Whatever, that was fine. Except, she ended up canceling on us anyways, and we went without her.

A group of five-six ghetto kids (and when I say ghetto kids, I mean white kids who talk like they're black), right behind me had a running commentary for the first 45-50 minutes of the film. "Oh he's hella dumb! I hope he dies first. Aww, Grandpa! That ***** better die!" Literally one of those kind of kids. People around us would tell them to keep it down, but they would act like they couldn't hear.

During one of the main grabbers of the film a girl in the row ahead of me stood up and yelled at the kids, threatened them, and the entire theater laughed at the kids as they proceeded to shut the hell up the rest of the movie.

Anyways, that all happened in one of the better parts of the film, and I felt like I needed to re-watch the entire damn thing, as so many moments were ruined by their childish banter.

As for Evil Dead, I thought it was a respectful remake. There were plenty of nods to the original, and they took enough liberties with it that I felt like it was original enough. The kids weren't your typical slasher kids going to a cabin to get wasted, and I liked that. The gore was there with buckets of blood, and the movie doesn't quite go the direction you'd expect, and I thought it was admirable.

All-in-all, it's The Avengers done as a horror film. It's a popcorn film. It's awesome, it's gruesome, and it's fun. The characters are kind of just there, and the main dude does some really idiotic stuff, but it doesn't ruin the film.

For what you're dealing with, it's a well-made remake. Light-years ahead of crap poor attempts like Nightmare on Elm St., Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Natalie Portman WOULD own Hollywood if she wanted too, but she doesn't.
Anne Hathaway could get up there.
Lindsay looked like she would, but she's a trainwreck.
Lawrence and Emma have a ton of promise, but they need to choose roles wisely. Lawrence has mixed Indie with big budget, Watson will need to as well.
Scarlett has tagged on to the big budget hype with Avengers, she might be just playin for paychecks at this point.

Any way you look at it, it looks like a golden age of hot young white women. Praise the Lawd!!!!!!

The guy who wrote lost is responsible for it. Do not overthink it. There is no reason to. He throws stuff at the wall and let's his cult fans play mad libs.

I get suspension of disbelief. I mean I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy guy, so obviously I don't expect everything I watch to be rooted in reality. But I feel like Purge is trying to present itself as showing something that could happen. I'm probably over-thinking it.
