Gotta keep trying to visit this thread as much as possible. Been lacking on that...

-Watched Argo for a second time last night. Thought it was even better than the first time around. How true is that story really? Seems so Hollywood'd out... the exact DAY they are scheduled to take a flight out is the EXACT day the Iranian radicals storm into their house looking for them? It was THAT perfect of timing. And there was plenty more far-fetched things I notice. Great movie nonetheless... don't think it's anywhere near a classic though. Scoot McNairy and Tate Donovan were great in their roles. Scoot keeping their balls from being clipped when describing the movie

-Halfway through my second viewing of Heat. Damn, is that a marathon. But it's good entertainment nonetheless. The villain in this movie, dude with the long hair, just creepy man. He would never be convincing in a role as a character with moralistic intentions. Crazy seeing Val Kilmer skinny... didn't watch movies through the 80s and early 90s. Him normal to me is him in MacGruber.

-Finished Sons Of Anarchy Season 1 finally. Eh at best. So Season 2 is the best one I remember you guys saying? Maybe I'll give it another chance. Just feel like there's not much substance to it.

-Spontaneously watched Saw a few days ago with some friends under the influence of recreational drugs. That ENTIRE movie is way better than I originally remember. The storyline is actually thought-provoking, intriguing, and suspenseful. Danny Glover being over-obsessed with the case because of his partner, the cringe-worthy scene where Amanda has to find the key in her boyfriend's body who she was told was dead, but obviously wasn't , the twists and.. of course... the FINAL TWIST. Then the montage of previous scenes we had already seen that help you put everything together while pretty much blowing your mind. Thought I liked Saw II better, but I switched my opinion after watching the first again. There's some pretty significant unintentional comedy at the end though. Dr. Gordon's voice after he had cut off his leg. Like c'mon. The guy sounded like he had aged 40 years and was talking through a string-and-cup phone. Unnecessary.

Waingrow, man. Truly hateable in all respects. Not only is he a total sociopath, he's also a dumb *** and p*****%. It was necessary to the plot, but one of the things that bothers me about Heat is that I don't think he ever really got what he deserved.

What bothered me about Heat was the timing. They were IN the bank, and already getting ready to leave before the cops even got the tip. How in the hell were they still there and the entire bank is surrounded by cops already? That scene ALWAYS bothers me, and then about 14 seconds later when my speakers are rattling my brain, it's all worth it. What a ******g amazing scene. Absolutely beautiful.

Saw, much better series than given credit for. I thought the first 3-4 were really solid in the way they kept the story moving, coming back, and returning characters you thought were long gone. I know it got overly gory/cheesy as it reached 5-6, etc, but overall, that series is on point for my money.

It's not reasonable how much I love Heat. Couldn't even count how many times I've seen it, but that to me is a perfect film. 3 hours that go by in 20 minutes and have you mad that it's ending. Not one character wasted. Not one scene unearned, and everyone hit. Michael Mann knew what you wanted from the film better than you did.

You coulda probably skipped the middle 6 or 7 episodes and been fine.

response to JPZx; When Argo was coming out on DVD history channel or discovery channel idk which did a special on the real "Argo" to clarify information just like they do with every other "based on historic events" movie that's popular coming out. it wasn't the exact day but the movie was all theatrics of course for suspense.

I just started watching the Sons and I'm on season 5 mostly because I hate waiting for the new seasons to roll in with shows. season 1's for all shows I've learned are made just to introduce everything so I never judge too much. but in season 1 episode 9 I felt so

when half sack's girl sucker punches an officer in the grocery store I noticed a film camera in the top right corner of the scene during some of the quick shots the first time watching it.
 

I'm going to start watching breaking bad soon but to clarify one thing for me... is it good because of hype? character development? acting?, cinematography? or just overall. I know people live by some shows when there's a missing aspect in the show

For some reason I also caught myself watching Silver Linings again because at first I thought it was nothing special with just Jennifer and Bradley's acting put into it. but now I saw both Pat's Parent's acting were really great. also watching Pi again, not life of Pi, Pi(199. watching movies more than once always brings new things.

I always call Breaking Bad, what would happen if the Coen Bros made a TV show. I don't even really know how to hype it up, past saying: everything good you've heard about it is true. And even though the internet's probably spoiled a lot for you, it won't matter, because they pulled every moment off so well. And Bryan Cranston is a beast. And Aaron Paul gets better every episode.

If they nail these last 8 episodes, this will probably be considered the greatest drama ever on television.

And unlike The Wire or The Sopranos, Breaking Bad is a ridiculously watchable show. There isn't really a learning curve where you adjust to the show, it pulls you in and pulls you through from go, and gets better every single episode. And yeah, the cinematography is like suburban, desert neo-noir. You could appreciate this show on mute.

Finally saw the first evil dead. I had seen the second one many years ago and loved it. First one is pretty damn good. Gotta rewatch the second and see the third one in full because I know I've seen parts of it.

I like these types of horror movies. Gotta have the comic relief. Can't stand the torture porn snuff films of today. I enjoyed these effects more than anything CGI can do. Some parts near the ending are just really so damn nasty :x

This is probably my least favorite genre. So impressed that I liked it. This would have been a run of the mill movie without Sam raimi's direction. He really had his A game. Bruce campbell is great too. Yes there are many corny parts but it adds to the campiness of it all.

Watched the new Evil Dead last night. That **** was wild So much disgusting over-the-top stuff. I was SURE that the ending would have been different, I figured that Mia would have still been possessed and **** would have been depressing in the end. Worst part of the movie, gross effects speaking, had to be Natalie's arm hanging on by a thread and then falling off :x The acting wasn't all that great, some parts were more puke-worthy than the gore, but the kids kept the film moving and delivered when they needed to. I loved the demon's dialogue though. Oh and the ending. That chainsaw. "Feast on this..." So good.

Overall, real solid movie. I'm happy I saw it in theaters, that added to the effect of it all, and luckily there were no terrible people in the theater with my friends and I.

Yeah, BB is almost done. 2nd half of the last season is this summer.

I would say, put off watching til the season's about to start, cuz you'll be fiending, I promise.

It's the type of show where as brutal as it can be, you'll binge through it.

Main message in Heat had to be De Niro's favorite quote he applied in many situations from his friend... "Don't possess anything you can't leave within 30 seconds if you feel the heat around the corner."

As an audience we were expecting this quote to apply to the girl, Edie, that he had recently begun seeing, but it was Waingrow. They had just botched a bank robbery and the heat was definitely around the corner. Away from danger and ready to leave the country, he received the message of where Waingrow was, and "couldn't ditch him completely even when the heat was being felt around the corner." His complete neglect for ******** didn't allow him to let Waingrow off the hock. Not following his own lesson led to his demise.

i liked prometheus, it looked amazing in the theaters and it was pretty decent for a new movie..

i watched a pretty interesting movie tonight it's called small apartments.

had the dude from bridesmaids that is brothers with rebel wilson, plus she was in one scene.

james caan,billy crystal,johnny knoxville,juno temple,dude that says whammy on anchor man.

pretty entertaining and hilarious, its probably a limited release movie so i doubt you will hear anything about it.

Have you guys heard of West of Memphis? Or those Paradise Lost documentaries on HBO?

They're about the West Memphis 3. These 3 teenagers who 20 years ago got convicted of killing these kids, because they were high school outcasts and that made them easy targets. They made a doc on HBO called Paradise Lost when it happened and a 2nd one, a few years later, when a lot of new info came up. Then Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory came out a couple years ago. What makes it so special, is that so many famous people have come out the woodwork to try and help free these kids.

Well, I watched West of Memphis which is a real film, that sorta sums up all 3 of those docs and then some. I'd kinda recommend watching Purgatory, because it doesn't really have time to focus more than 5 minutes on each of the 3, because there's so damn much to cover. They break down every inch of the case. The investigation and failure of the cops. The suspects. The judge and his motivations. The trial. The expert witnesses. The families. The crime scene. The movement. So much. And it does kinda play to an audience that's already aware of the story...

But it's amazing for what it is. Every 5 minutes the story just gets bigger and deeper. It's hard to slight the impact of seeing Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and Peter Jackson going to bat for these dudes. I mean, Peter Jackson got this film made. The story is just too incredible. There are so many moving parts, so many layers of social failure that helped make this happen. At every step, even with Paradise Lost 3, still pretty fresh on my mind, it finds ways to surprise you, and shock you. It felt like they found every last bit of footage you never saw in every situation.

Every time you wished there was an interview they'd have gotten, but accepted that there's no way they could find ______ or even get them to admit _____...2 minutes later they've got it and more. Everything. They got everything. They got Every. Damn. Thing. And it's so well produced. The movie itself, feels like a film. Not just some 60 minutes special.

It's just amazing. Even though I knew the story, this still hit me like a sledgehammer. My only knock on it is, for me, they didn't exactly stick the ending.

Spoiler: The ending of Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

In Purgatory, the big push...the big tension and suspense of the film lies on whether or not the 3 are finally gonna be freed from prison after 20 years. In this film, it's sorta just a tacked on foregone conclusion. They did such a great job explaining what they think happened, that all of the mystery is gone and you're barely even remember that the guys are even in prison.

9/10 better than The Impostor and right there with Queen of Versailles for me.

It's the kind of documentary you have to fight the urge to wiki, cuz you're just stuck with the weebey face for 2 hours straight.

Little known fact about Michael Mann. He wrote the first 4 episodes of Starsky & Hutch. Including his TV shows like Miami Vice & Crime Story, I've liked everything Mann has done. Even his early movies like Band Of The Hand (& of course Manhunter). A lot of people didn't like it, but I thoroughly enjoyed Miami Vice the movie & I think Public Enemies is a bit under appreciated. I'm interesting in his new project called Texas Killing Fields with Sam Worthington & Jessica Chastain.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Prometheus was one of the better movies of last year, cuz for all my points against it, the movie was gorgeous, David alone on the ship was brilliant, the cast was great and that c-section scene is never leaving my mind. It's just...I kinda hate half the movie. It's so easy to see the great film it was gonna be, before it took a left turn at stupid.

And I'll admit, I let a lot of hype and baggage in, that probably set me up to be disappointed. I mean, the viral marketing before it came out...I normally could care less about that stuff, but it was amazing for Prometheus.

I mean...





And it probably didn't help knowing that the guy who gave us Lost season 6 wrote it.

Guy Pearce is good at playing sinister guys. I also loved him in The Proposition, which I always recommend to people who like movies. I read somewhere someone was making The Count of Monte Cristo again. The version with Pearce playing Fernand Mondego & Jim Caviezel playing Edmond Dantes was a solid flick. Although I love him, Luis Guzman was miscast .

I wonder if Fassbender will be the next Bond after Craig let's go of the reins. I can't wait until his next flick with Steve McQueen (Twelve Years a Slave).

I'm intrigued by Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium starring Matt Damon. I liked District 9 especially since he accomplished the movie with a very small budget, not only for a sci-fi but for a movie in general.

Video Blog Reaction: 10 Minutes of Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Elysium’

Sony held an event today in four cities across the world to launch to buzz for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp‘s new film Elysium. Fans in the four cities were invited to the event through the film’s viral website. Blomkamp, producer Simon Kinberg and co-star Sharlto Copley were in attendance at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood to answer questions.

Star Matt Damon also answered questions from a theater in Germany, with his appearance also simulcast to the other venues. The event was to premiere the first trailer for Elysium, which will be online tomorrow at some point. But the filmmakers also screened a 10-minute sizzle reel of footage from the movie. Get our thoughts on the footage in a video blog we recorded, after the jump.

After the event I recorded a video blog reaction alongside Germain Lussier from /Film and Frosty from Collider. We don’t go into specifics, and won’t give you a description of the footage. (You can read Germain’s description of the 10 minutes at the bottom of this post.)

In the video we give a spoiler-free reaction to what we saw.





For those of you who don’t want to watch the video, here is my opinion in brief: While I was a bit underwhelmed by the trailer, the footage kicked my ***. I’m not sure if this is because I had already seen the awesome presentation at Comic Con last year, or if it was because the trailer was a bit more of a primer for the film’s story/concept. The only reason I bring this up is that the trailer goes online tomorrow and if you aren’t impressed, trust me, you will be when you see more footage.

Elysium looks beautiful, a fully realized future world complete with dust, dirt and scratches. Unlike other films that look like shiny, cool-looking concept art brought to life on a soundstage, Blomkamp shot his film in real locations in Mexico and Canada, augmenting it with gritty sci-fi tech. It feels like a real place, a real world. I feel that the action doesn’t end at the edges of the camera frame (like it does in so many other world building flicks) — it feels like a real place, with both the fantastical and horrific. This is what most excites me about the film.

Description of the 10-minutes of Elysium footage by Germain Lussier:

SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Spoiler: Warning: Spoiler!

Three ships take off from a terrible slum in the year 2159. They’re headed to Elysium, the utopian space station above the Earth reserved for the super rich. On Elysium, a warning says unauthorized ships are entering their airspace. Jodie Foster’s character sends a message to Kruger — an Elysium black ops soldier on Earth, played by Sharlto Copley — to take them down. On Earth, he picks up a huge rocket launcher and fires it into the sky. The rockets go into space and blow up all three ships.

Now we meet Max (Matt Damon) on some kind of line. Police officer robots see him and state his list of crimes, which is long. They ask him what’s in his bag and Damon’s character, who is bald, quips “hair products mostly.” They don’t find the joke funny and pin him to the ground, breaking his arm. We now move to a hospital where a nurse knows Max. He obviously has feelings for her. She fixes his arm and tell him to stay out of trouble. “I do,” he says.

Max goes to visit his parole officer, which is an automated machine. They have some playful banter and, by this time, we know things aren’t good for Max. Those things only get worse when he goes to work. His boss tells him he’s going to dock him half a day for being late and doesn’t want him to work with a cast. Max says it’s cool. During work, which is on some kind of robot assembly line, he’s forced to go into a hazardous area. An accident occurs, and a robot doc gives Max only 5 days to live.

The only way Max can stay alive is to get to Elysium, where there’s no disease, but he can’t afford it. He asks a friend (Diego Luna) for help and the friend introduces Max to some sort of criminal. The criminal wants Max to put on a Third Generation Hawk (or Hulk?) suit and to steal the thoughts on an Elysium citizen currently on Earth. He’ll do so by uplinking to the man’s brain. Unfortunately for Max, not only is this illegal, the Hawk suit has to be fused to his bones.

Now he’s a cyborg, and after checking out a few different guns, we see the man Max has to target, Carlyle, played by William Fichtner. He strolls to a very high tech space ship and begins to fly away when Max and a crew of guys start to shoot at it. We’re then taken to Elysium where Jodie Foster is alerted one of their citizens is in danger, and she dispatches Kruger.

Back to the hijacking, Max brings the plane down and Carlyle tells his droids that he wants these men killed. The battle begins. The droids are winning with their superior firepower when Max tackles one, rips his head off, and then fires at another while he’s reloading. The droid explodes in spectacular slow motion. Max then links into Carlyle and performs the data heist as Kruger finally arrives. The action continues.

Apparently, whatever Max downloads has the power to override all the systems on Elysium. And so begins a montage of action scenes that involved all sorts of weapons, crashes, fly over shots of Elysium, people running around corridors, hints at some larger, more powerful cyborg suits and more.

At the end, you pick your jaw off the floor because it looked that good.
