So, I kind of liked 300: Rise of an Empire.
I really liked the direction they took in retelling the first film; it was quite ambitious to venture into the past, then into the present, and a touch into the future.
I thought the film would feature a lot more of Xerxes, and it did at times, but it's heavily plot-heavy around the rivalry between an Athenian (Themistokles), and a Greek-turned-Persian general (Artemesia).
They spent enough time developing the conflict, intertwined enough action to keep anyone entertained, and had a pretty solid ending to the film. And seeing the origin story of Xerxes was interesting, although a bit predictable.
But, it begs for a sequel which I don't know we'll ever get.
The original 300 grossed about 210M, with an opening weekend of 71M.
Rise of an Empire grossed 48 million in it's opening weekend, and this weekend is huge for a potential sequels possibility. Seeing as Need for Speed has been heavily promoted for quite some time, it might take a huge demographic for this weekend.
Luckily, 300: Rise of an Empire has gained some money overseas.
I just want to see a fitting end to this should-be trilogy. I want to see the downfall of Xerxes.
