Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

What we learned from the Globes:

1. Dallas Buyers Club took home BOTH male actor awards for drama, thus giving it a major Oscar push for Best Picture along with those actor awards. I don't think Leto deserved it over Fassbender but he's been the favorite since day 1.

2. 12 Years a Slave isn't as strong a favorite as we thought, even though it took Best Picture- drama. It lost the 5 other nominations it had.

3. American Hustle is the safe darling come Oscar season.

4. Spike Jonze winning was the biggest upset of the night and now could be a sneaky Oscar winner. (very well deserved)

5. Captain Phillips is dead in the water.

So other award shows just mimic each other close as they can? Is it the same damn committee for all of them? Guess it's more of the same.

Eh, I'm not as hyped for another QT joint as I used to be, especially another western from him. Hopefully, overall it's better than his recent stuff.

No but there are trends.

The Globes are voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press.

The Oscars are The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which consists of about 5,800 people

Watched The Game (1997 Douglas and Penn) last night. Had potential, but the last few minutes (the ending) was  to me.

How did Nick jump off of the easily 100+ story building, land perfectly onto the landing pad, and walk away no problem for coffee in an airport :smh:

Was the whole 'game' intended to lighten up Nicky's uptight persona? Why would the hired actors let it get as far as it did when they knew Nicky was spiraling out of control?

Whole movie was a reach. Like how do all those random events happen with out a glitch.

Reminds me of The Dark Knight.

I remember The Game from when I was little. It would always scare me in this weird way. That clown in the house. :smh:

Honestly I tend to look at The Game from a more futuristic cabal/secret society viewpoint. It's the only way it works. Like being in the matrix. All those things happening like that, you eventually have to question reality.

I saw Stoker the other night which I only watched cuz Wentworth Miller the 3rd did the screenplay and I basically construed that as Michael Scofield from Prison break wrote a movie  :pimp: It was dope but ****** up.

Nicole Kidman just made me oddly more attracted to her in this, it's like I just started noticing her beauty. I aint in to her type for the most part. She did her thing acting wise as expected.

Stand outs were Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode's creepy *** performance. Really creepy and Mia was equally disturbing but more deep in that at the end you still don't completely figure out. Goode's character was a mystery and as things went on he really felt like a character right out of a Hitchcock murder mystery. Had me guessing what the **** was up with his character throughout until the reveal.

All in all very good movie.

No one actually buys the Golden Globes as an legit awards show. I remember when The Tourist was nominated for Best Pictures in the musical/comedy category  ( bribery rumors are the reason). The Hollywood foreign press is a joke.

The only reason people tune in are to see celebs drunk and see the potential awards favorites audition their first speeches. The real shows to watch to see award trends are the guild awards.

Originally Variety reported that Pym would be the villain so you may see some place run with that, it's not true. Pym will not be the villain and it will be a heist film.

Michael Douglas killed that role though... Forgot it was him at times...
Lutrher is REMARKABLE! REMARKABLE!!
What do you like about Luther?
I almost started this show, since I liked Pacific Rim.
Well it's nothing like that movie, it's not sci fi.

It's just a really well written psychological crime drama by Neil Cross. DCI Luther is back on the force after the end of a particularly gruesome case, he's trying to get his life together, do his job, repair his marriage, and get back on that path of living. His first case back he runs afoul of a enigmatic female serial killer. From there on out in each miniseries that's released he comes across mostly murderers on each case every ep that are hard to catch for everybody but himself which all tackle various themes that you can connect to on a emotional level or just see them as the interesting cases that they are, a good amount of action as well. Plus each "season" has an underlying subplot that usually gets wrapped up at the end of each series and most times sets up things for the next series. All the while being great at his job his life continues to fall apart and he goes from trying to fix it to running away from it. Luther is really just a good guy in an anti-hero's clothing and a complete BADASS.

As things stand now the show is over after 3 series (14 eps in total) but currently and as planned everything will be wrapped up in a movie which is in production. The way the British handle things though I'm not sure if it's gonna be a theatrical release or just an extra long special that eventually ends up on tv. You can catch the show on netflix or on BBC channel or online. There's also talks of a spinoff following another character from the show.

Luther was robbed

I didn't see Luther but Behind the Candelabra would've been an GG/Oscar contender if a major studio had the balls to pick it up.

Fact is no one wanted to pick up a film about a gay romance.

I thought both Matt Damon and Michael Douglas were great in it. I was actually hoping Rob Lowe got an award too.

Despite having a really small role, he was AWESOME.
It was great and is deserving of nomination but I ******g love this show Luther at this point.
Happy 12 Years a Slave won Best Drama, but pretty disappointed NO ONE from that film got Golden Globes for their performances. I could've sworn Lupita was a lock.
When JLa won I was like

Probably figuring girl would never be praised in another movie again so why give her the award despite her performance being vastly superior to the annoying NJ wife from American Hustle

I know McQueen was thinking he was getting shafted for a while there, just started drinking and enjoying his time but the HFP went for that typical thought you was gonna go 0 for but we're gonna save the best for last.
Thanks for the info, I'll check this show out.

A couple years old, but I thought this was an interesting (if not altogether convincing) defense of the film.

Watched Wolf again  :pimp:

It's probably the only movie that actually made me want to try pills. "GIVE ME THE LUDES!!!!"

I'll finally get around to watching Blue Jasmin, Captain Phillips, and maybe Gravity.

I'm rewatching The Wire and I don't know if I wanna skip season 2 or watch it again.
Before I watch the wire, I kept hearing that season 2 was a bore or not that good when compared to other seasons.

I thought that 2 was really good.
Ziggy's rise and fall was fun to watch.
That one guy's speech about the union. That alone is worth rewatching the whole season for.

The Greek being introduced and getting in bed with that one dude's nephew or whatever.
In short, you should rewatch season 2.

What can't Downey Jr do?!?! Singing The Police classic with Sting at his 60th birthday show a couple of years ago...

Downey is one of the most talented in Hollywood, damn shame he threw away so many of his years with drugs and alcohol

Watched Fruitvale Station last night it was damn good. Michael B. Jordan has a bright future ahead of him.
