So I'm desperately trying to see all the best picture nominees before the Award show to get an opinion on who should win. I'm missing Wolf, Dallas and 12 years. So far my pick would go to Gravity only because im biased towards Cuaron for his style and movie premise in general (I love space). another reason I wouldn't mind him winning only cinematography in case he doesnt win best picture. last year when I saw Argo I immediately felt that it should win because of its epicness and dramaness, if thats a word, but these are all like a 6th sense type of thing

The pilot didn't actually do much for me, but I enjoyed the acting. So I gave the second episode a shot and it definitely picks up a little better from there.
On episode 5 now, its getting good

Would love for Wolf to win everything it's nominated for. If not, Dallas Buyers Club. Bias is strong for the both of those.

I need to watch DCBC and Blue Jasmine already. Don't want to overreact when who I want to win doesn't win.
Eh the stuff he was in this year just wasn't THAT good imo. While his strongest was Captain Philips I'm not surprised. The movie gets a nom though.at the Tom Hanks snub today. So much for his comeback year... going from potential double nominee to nothing at all. I was not expecting this ether because Hanks is pretty beloved by the Academy.
Christian Bale did good work on Hustle but there's no way he deserved a nomination over Hanks, Captain Philips was some of his best work ever.
I know I wasn't the only one that saw it. The main reason I want to smash.Margot Robbie is the new Jaime Pressly...

I just finished watching 12 Years A Slave. Amazing! One of the best films of 2013, IMO.

I believe the purpose of that statement was how good Lupita was in 12 Years a Slave, not that Lawrence wasn't good in American Hustle.

Honestly, looking back on it Lupita put on the best performance in 12 Years a Slave and only argument I can see against that was she wasn't in it for very very long but to me she was in it just enough for me to feel that way.
Eijifor did his thing no doubt, I felt Solomon's struggle through him but that master's favorite sex thang struggle is REAL.

I thought Fassbender was the most impressive. I might be bias since he's my favorite actor right now but he killed that role.

Yes and no.
Yes for Lupita and her performance in 12 Years. She's deserving of the Oscar over the rest of the nominees; she won the Critics Choice award last night FWIW.
I didn't find Lawrence all that special in AH. Amy Adams was much better. I just really don't see the appeal in Lawrence to be perfectly honest. She's being billed as the next hot young actress, when in reality she reminds me of an Angry Bird. She was solid in SLP, but I rather have seen Chastain win last year.

Saw most of WOW, have to finish it tonight. I might be the only one that thinks this is just ok. It's entertaining because of the unintended comedy of the subject matter (the excess & such), but it's not even close to Scorsese's best work IMO.

Random tidbit but if you watched 24, Mitch Larsen (the mom) was the president's aide in seasons 1 & 2.
Stan Larsen is the clerk owner in season 2 of 24. I know, pretty dumb but i was blown away since I'm currently watching The Killing and 24

Any of you guys ever watch The Lovely Bones? Is that worth viewing? Just had an idea for a story and I realized it was the same concept as Bones (except with a parent dying and watching over the child), but I never saw the movie or read the book, so just curious if it's worthwhile.

On that topic, what did you guys think about Cumerbatch's character?
In the movie, Solomon and the mother of the children who got separated by Cumerbatch's character purchasing her had this discussion outside their little cabin house. They were arguing and the mother criticized Solomon for being obedient. Solomon said Cumberbatch was an okay man and was only a slavemaster "under the circumstances."
And also, in the press conference, Alfre Woodard said she thought Cumberbatch's character was a good man, her reasoning being essentially the same as Solomons.

I love Fassbender but maybe I'm hard on him since I know and seen him do better performances. His portrayal was really good but not the best for me, especially amongst racist slave masters in cinematic history.
It'd go Nyong'o, Eijifor, and Fassbender imo.
I didn't think much of Cumberbatch's performance or character. He could've done a lot better if he played a more vital role but he didn't. His character was simply a good man adapting to the times and living the way he had to get by but not enjoying the situation when it came to the more distasteful and abhorrent ways of that life. Him playing the slave master that tried to keep that family together but couldn't afford it and then struggling for a second when Solomon told him the truth of his situation but ultimately couldn't be bothered with it was just about right.
Pitt's character was a better man though.
