i love the cohen brothers but this new movie inside llewyn davis was absolute trash. 1 out 5

i watched y tu mama tambien, that movie is quite interesting

So instead of five, I only was able to see three films this week.

Lone Survivor. American Hustle. Her.

All three were excellent, but Her was the one that stole the show for me.

And congratulations for Lupita. Glad she at least one of the big three awards.

Also, what's up with Wolf of Wall Street not being nominated for ANYTHING at the SAGs?
 
I just assumed their cut off time was earlier than others so Wolf wasn't qualified.

It's either that or all members of the sag hate the movie to the point it couldn't even get nominated for anything despite a legendary director and one of their golden boys :lol:
 
We're all movie heads in here, but for the general population, a damn good movie you've never heard of/haven't seen is Black Rain (1989, Michael Douglas & Andy Garcia).

Watched it last night, :pimp: :pimp: two hats up, movie was awesome. I'm not sure what it is, but I can never take Douglas seriously. He's "so 80s" , and that's an era of film where you just can't help and laugh as you watch most movies that came out of that decade. But with him, and a stellar Japanese cast, the movie was great. Highly recommended. He redeemed himself for me after having watched The Game last :lol: .

Black Rain is awesome. I love how Michael Douglas calls everyone "babe" in that film, regardless of gender
 
Watched Drinking Buddies today and loved it.

Granted, I like mumblecore movies, Swanberg, and I'm a huge fan of Kendrick, Wilde, and Johnson, so it would have been hard for me to dislike the movie. And I can see why some might not be a fan, but I figured so long as they avoided the "It's so hard to be figure out my life as a white, twentysomething living in a big city" thing (which is a huge problem for a lot of indies) I would like it and I did.
 
What Should Disney Do with ‘Indiana Jones?’

I'm all for one more Indiana movie with Ford which kinda brings things to a conclusion and then go straight to a reboot. Can't really James Bond Indy so a full recasting back in the WW2 era but going on new adventures like this is alt history of Indy. NO REMAKES of classics. Sorta like what they're doing with Star Trek but less homages so we don't get something like Wrath of Khan/Into Darkness.

Right now since I haven't given it much though, I have no idea who could be the Indiana Jones.
 
I'm really not sure what to make of the commercials I'm seeing for the Lego Movie. Looks so random.
 
I'm gonna watch it lol just not in theaters looks kinda funny

I don't know how many movies are gonna be timeless classics or not but this year was excellent in terms of amount of quality movies that came outnn
 
So apparently Captain Philips is 100 percent inaccurate according to the crew members. They claim Philips wasn't a hero at all and endangered the lives of everyone on board. I didn't think Tom Hanks was that great in it anyway. Solid, but not his best work like some people in this thread are claiming. I did think the Somalian guy deserved the academy nomination, however. 
 
I was trying to figure out why this was such a great performance today. Cause Hanks puts on an accent? Forrest Gump was great acting, this was the kind of performance you'd expect from an actor of Hanks' caliber. Doesn't detract from the film, impresses you slightly with an accent he hasn't done before, but doesn't do anything mind blowing to go wow, that was incredible. To me, Leo in Wolf was far more impressive because he made a scumbag drug addict the ******g man up until the part when he almost kills his daughter and you realize you should've been disgusted by him all along.

It really was a brilliant scene. I liked his physicality during the scene where she kept throwing water at him too.

The entire second half was amazing to me. Movie has its flaws though

For a movie that's 3 hours we got almost no character development and not much depth to any secondary character. The women characters were pretty useless too. It was all on Leo's back with some comic relief from Jonah hill. Luckily Leo did an incredible job. But he went from wide eyed, no alcohol at lunch, no drugs, to stealing peoples money with no remorse whatsoever a little quick for my taste

At least there were brief moments that he seemed like a person with feelings. And I liked the ending which gives it a lot of positive points

The movie was more journey than a character piece. At the end of this Jordan doesn't learn from his mistakes or wrongdoings. There is no moral of the story. What you see about him is what you get.

The movie was really just displaying that Jordan was a narcissistic maniac and all of his friends and ppl who were working for him were perverted crazy scumbags all looking to make money and have a good time.

I get your complaint about how quickly he changed. Maybe that extra that got cut out focuses on how the job forced him to get rid of his principles and lower his standards as a decent human being. Maybe there's more bonding time with MM's character who continues to show him the ropes and be his mentor. More time developing his gift of gab and how easily he can talk ppl in to things. I agree there could've been a scene where a light bulb went off in Jordan's head where he realized this is how the world works and there's nothing wrong with screwing ppl and companies over to get what you want in life.

As for stuff about the women well this is based on the book. So take that complaint up with the real Jordan (he either downplayed the roles of the women in hislife or they literally didn't play a huge part in his success) unless you wanted Martin to just make up some subplot about his wife or that one female employee or his first wife.
 
nah im not saying the women helped make him or anything. just i mean at least show me why he was so in love with the dutchess enough to move her in and divorce his wife so quick. im sure he could have just cheated with her.

i would have liked to see how he handled his divorce. did she get half because he was a nobody and never signed a prenup? did he fight it?

yes i wanted way more with the MM character. he clearly had a great affect on him. I mean leo was talking about having mutually beneficial relationships with clients to screwing them over with no remorse waaaaay to easily. he is clearly cognizant of how he screws over people that aren't even rich at points.

ive heard complaints that the movie glorified him. to scorsese's credit i didn't see that at all. this guy was a piece of **** 90% of the time. i just didn't get the true feel of how he got that way. or how he became a drug addict to that extent

i do think part of me has to accept that it's a movie about a slick talking kid from queens on the come up and not the stock market. him and his friends simply aren't that deep.
