I love Harry Potter, everything about it. 

Didn't even read/finish a HP book till my 2nd semester in college when I took an adolescent literature class as an elective. It was awesome.

After that semester, I think I finished the series the first month of summer.

And the last few movies, although not the most direct book-to-movie translations....

Yeah, I was talking more about how the book was written.

You'd have to be knee deep in the koolaid, to say the movies can't or aren't improving on the books. You could kinda make a case for the 1st one, but that's it. Those 100 pgs are something to live up to, but outside of that, the movies can only be smarter, more thoughtful and well realized than the books.

I'm not kidding...something interesting or smart is gonna get explained? Katniss has to leave the room to get a biscuit or pass out. And that's if she doesn't just zone out and get busy describing everyone's clothes, and oh...convo's over time to go.

Those 100 pgs? First time they really let all the interesting, smart worldbuilding stuff happen in front of her and us in a well written way.

I hope they focus more on the important messages and less on the biscuit eating in the flick

Movie will almost never live up to the book, so it's best not to read it and ruin the movie. I read Ender's Game back in high school and it's still the best book I've ever read. Watched the movie and I thought it was the worst ever. Don't know what my thoughts would have been had I not read the book. 

As for the harry potter series, the movies are good, maybe even great, but the books are definitely better. I never read the hunger games books and I'm glad. Thought both of the movies were good but not great. I was always more interested in the politics of the films than the action.

From what I gather, the Twilight series is an exception to the general rule that books > movies. The Twilight books and movies both suck as far as I can tell (I've only seen like half of the first movie and never read any of the books).

^ See, I said that last year in this thread, the fact that virtually NO ONE says "The movie is better."

Sure, there are random examples where the film version of a story was better than the paper... but they're exceptions.

"Pssshhh, the book was better" is simply saying "I love books, and I've read this one."

If you want to interpret it that way, go for it. But its not accurate for everyone. I don't love books. I barely ever read for pleasure. I spend all day reading for work most of the time, so the last thing I want to do when I get home is more reading. The only books I've read since, like 2002, have been the Harry Potter novels. But I still say I enjoyed the experience of reading those books more than the experience of seeing the movies that came after them. *shrug*

^^^ Yeah, I'm not sure I'm following. Do you really not believe that people can actually enjoy reading a book more than seeing a movie based on that book? Because that's what it seems like you're saying. Most people I know don't read books just to say they read a book. They really, honestly get enjoyment out of it. That's why I used myself as an example. I wouldn't have spent time reading the 7 Harry Potter books if I didn't really enjoy the process. The fact that I haven't read anything else other than those books in the last decade should be strong proof of that.

If you don't care that people read and like the books, fine. But categorically rejecting the idea that people can really enjoy reading books is kind of silly.

i think what he's saying is that he hates when people dismiss a movie conversion after they've read the book.

instead of talking about the movie's plot, the book readers tend to delve into the differences between the book and the movie. i guess he takes this as the book readers "bragging" in a way.

That makes sense and can be annoying. My brother does that with Game of Thrones. Instead of focusing on the merits of the show, he nitpicks about the differences between the books and show.

Just to get this offy chest. I watched the first three Harry potters and don't care to finish the rest. I mean the first three were great, but I kind of lost interest. I've never read the books.
