Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Man, for me, the second half of the Harry Potter story is way better than the first.

Sometimes the book being better than the movie is true but other times ppl just have ridiculously outrageous imaginations.

Plus it's a whole different draw and attention keeper where you can't help but keep reading a good book as opposed to can't help paying attention to a good movie.

Movies also sacrifice details and dialog for 90 minutes of seeing the story in life action.

Pros and cons.

End of the day there's gonna be ppl who read the book first but be able to separate that experience from watching the movie and then there's gonna ppl who can't do that and mostly think it will suck let alone saying the book was better.

Why can't both exist? Movies and books are different forms of propaganda, both equally good in their own right. And Harry Potted...eh y'all can have it.

So, I kind of liked 300: Rise of an Empire.

I really liked the direction they took in retelling the first film; it was quite ambitious to venture into the past, then into the present, and a touch into the future.

I thought the film would feature a lot more of Xerxes, and it did at times, but it's heavily plot-heavy around the rivalry between an Athenian (Themistokles), and a Greek-turned-Persian general (Artemesia).

They spent enough time developing the conflict, intertwined enough action to keep anyone entertained, and had a pretty solid ending to the film. And seeing the origin story of Xerxes was interesting, although a bit predictable.

But, it begs for a sequel which I don't know we'll ever get.

The original 300 grossed about 210M, with an opening weekend of 71M.

Rise of an Empire grossed 48 million in it's opening weekend, and this weekend is huge for a potential sequels possibility. Seeing as Need for Speed has been heavily promoted for quite some time, it might take a huge demographic for this weekend.

Luckily, 300: Rise of an Empire has gained some money overseas.

I just want to see a fitting end to this should-be trilogy. I want to see the downfall of Xerxes.

Wait, just WAIT to see the ire and debate when those 50 Shades movies come out, and are muted as all hell, all those horny broads will be irate ouchea.

I agre
Movie will almost never live up to the book, so it's best not to read it and ruin the movie. I read Ender's Game back in high school and it's still the best book I've ever read. Watched the movie and I thought it was the worst ever. Don't know what my thoughts would have been had I not read the book.

As for the harry potter series, the movies are good, maybe even great, but the books are definitely better. I never read the hunger games books and I'm glad. Thought both of the movies were good but not great. I was always more interested in the politics of the films than the action.

Dude. **** yes.
All of it.
Mainly-- I can't read a book if I'm gunna see the movie

and as someone who didnt read the book, lemme just say
ENDERS GAME WAS AWFULLLLLLLLL

I read The Great Gatsby. It's not better than the movie...... but I thought the movie was pretty bad too.

On the real though, I read Of Mice & Men and the movie was way better. Sinise and Malkovich :smokin I was way more connected to the movie.

Sounds like it's time for a new Draft :nerd:

Maybe a best movie character of the 2000's draft. Then 90's, then 80's, etc.

CP? :nerd:

I'd love to be in that

Those are difficult to pull off. We need at least 10-12 regs that have the clock to participate.

Then we'd need to lay out the topics we're tryin to cover, etc.

If bodies start to pile up, we can surely put somethin in motion, but like I said, it takes some time.

Something I've noticed about modern comedies, they don't do a lot of set up punch line jokes and visual gags as older comedies. Think Spaceballs, the toy , Airplane. Today is all dry humor, awkward, self depreciating, other depreciating. More sex gags than raw gags, which is a little lowbrow but works.

Just my two cents.

I think you're right. The occasional comedy comes along that's a bit more sophisticated, but for the most part the stuff you mentioned dominates.

Didn't read the book.

Won't read the book.

Expectation level: 0

I expect it to pick up where Catching Fire left off.

I'm not looking to be excited. I don't watch movies to be excited or thrilled or wowed. I watch movies... to think, to be challenged. The Hunger Games story, so far, is a multi-layered story. I anticipate seeing how the story comes to close in both parts of Mocking Jay.

:D
well that is very good, but to let you know all readers of the book hated the 3rd one, and it's being split into 2 separate films
Well that is very good, but I'm not a reader of the books. :D

So I don't hate the third one as a reader of the books.

Again, haven't read the books.

If all the bookreaders are collectively agreeing with each other that it sucks... good for them.

I'm not in their cool little book club.

Don't wanna be, either.

I'll be over here, happily anticipating Mocking Jay. :D

That's nice and all but given the story isn't good in The 3rd one and the movies have been relatively accurate to the books it is relevant that the 3rd book is by far the weakest

Don't read many books but I remember readin the book as a kid "Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events"

Then watching the movie with Jim Carrey and being disappointed how it wasn't as "dark and creepy" like the books made it. The movie set was perfect though.

Has there ever been a bad episode of South Park? I guess you can see view the quality of the episodes from a "some are better than others" viewpoint, but in general, there are no bad episodes.

Show's been on for, what, 16 years? That's a lot of episodes. Must be at least one bad one in there somewhere. But it has been pretty consistently funny.

Be interesting to Bobby him make that jump to the guy.

Olivia Wilde...is hot....and awesome...when she's just kinda playing herself or in small doses or in interviews or at Knick games. She had a nice little run last year? :nerd:

Scorsese and Winters gets a season from me.

No, it's really not relevant.

What you know about the 3rd one is not relevant to what I don't know about it.

Your disappointment or lack of anticipation for the 3rd one is not relevant to my anticipation of seeing how the story ends, knowing NOTHING about it.

And if you think "So you'd rather just not know anything about it?": YES. I'm waiting for the trailer. I'm waiting to hear book elitists tear the 3rd part of the story up and and down, so I can grab little snippets from their miserable critiques and get a glimpse of what will happen... but I would really rather, if I had my way, just go into Mocking Jay with Catching Fire's ending fresh in my mind, and see what happens.

No, your knowledge of the story's close is absolutely NOT relevant to those who are just anticipating the story's close, ignorant to how it wraps up and anticipating seeing it.

I haven't seen homeboy from Attack the Block in anything since, and you guys drop his name for two upcoming movies in the same day.

Well...

With Adam Driver in line to play the villain in the next “Star Wars,” the next order of business for Disney and Lucasfilm is finding the right Jedi to challenge Driver and the evil empire.

After meeting with several young actors this past year, sources tell Variety that “Downton Abbey” thesp Ed Speleers, “Attack the Block” star John Boyega, Jesse Plemons and theater actors Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher are among the men J.J. Abrams is eyeing for the lead role. Though some insiders warn the search is still ongoing, multiple sources confirm to Variety these actors have moved to the top of the list in recent weeks.
