Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Kingsman looks interesting but I'm way beyond Sam Jackson playing the some old guy cussing & ish... :rolleyes His hat wearing thing is like Steve Jobs & his mock turtle necks... :rolleyes

Not a big musical fan but this looks kind of interesting. Leave to the Japanese to do a hip hop musical. Poster for the flick is kinda cool too...

1000

Last couple of flicks I saw, finally saw Disconnect. Solid cable movie. Kept me interested. Wifey liked it too. Was like :x & :wow: when Bateman had the hockey stick... Wifey & I were like NOoooooooooo....

Also saw The Two Faces of January... Liked this too. Great cast. Not the biggest Kirsten Dunst fan though... She's so dry in everything she's in... Great rental from VOD.

This has me interested too... I've always been fascinated by the Vlad the Impaler from the actual historical perspective (even if this movie takes liberty with the facts). Can't imagine being the enemy opposing Kazıklı Bey (Sir Impaler) riding into a forest of hundreds of impaled victims. :x

Eyes Wide Shut it On.
I know we talked about this movie a few weeks back and I praised the score but, I just realized I watch this movie every time it comes on. Every time. This was in 99 when I was a "big" fan of Tom Cruise.(don't dislike him now but he's just meh). I also attended one of these similar parties from the movie once when I was 19 and man, I was scared ******** I'm not going to lie. I remember seeing this shortly after and I think I grew up a little bit after seeing it and experiencing that party. Anyway, enough of that ramble.

I'd add this to my list of flicks I watch when they come on, for sure

Did you participate in the party raunch?

Interesting stuff from Soderbergh during his retirement... Here's his take on Raiders of the Lost Ark as a black & white silent flick using pieces from Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross' scores for The Social Network & The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

You can watch the flick in it's entirety on his website.

(Note: This posting is for educational purposes only.)

I’m assuming the phrase “staging” came out of the theatre world, but it’s equally at home (and useful) in the movie world, since the term (roughly defined) refers to how all the various elements of a given scene or piece are aligned, arranged, and coordinated. In movies the role of editing adds something unique: the opportunity to extend and/or expand a visual (or narrative) idea to the limits of one’s imagination—a crazy idea that works today is tomorrow’s normal.

I value the ability to stage something well because when it’s done well its pleasures are huge, and most people don’t do it well, which indicates it must not be easy to master (it’s frightening how many opportunities there are to do something wrong in a sequence or a group of scenes. Minefields EVERYWHERE. Fincher said it: there’s potentially a hundred different ways to shoot something but at the end of the day there’s really only two, and one of them is wrong). Of course understanding story, character, and performance are crucial to directing well, but I operate under the theory a movie should work with the sound off, and under that theory, staging becomes paramount (the adjective, not the studio. although their logo DOES appear on the front of this…).

So I want you to watch this movie and think only about staging, how the shots are built and laid out, what the rules of movement are, what the cutting patterns are. See if you can reproduce the thought process that resulted in these choices by asking yourself: why was each shot—whether short or long—held for that exact length of time and placed in that order? Sounds like fun, right? It actually is. To me. Oh, and I’ve removed all sound and color from the film, apart from a score designed to aid you in your quest to just study the visual staging aspect. Wait, WHAT? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS? Well, I’m not saying I’m like, ALLOWED to do this, I’m just saying this is what I do when I try to learn about staging, and this filmmaker forgot more about staging by the time he made his first feature than I know to this day (for example, no matter how fast the cuts come, you always know exactly where you are—that’s high level visual math ****).

At some point you will say to yourself or someone THIS LOOKS AMAZING IN BLACK AND WHITE and it’s because Douglas Slocombe shot THE LAVENDAR HILL MOB and the THE SERVANT and his stark, high-contrast lighting style was eye-popping regardless of medium.

I have faith in Brit, but I do agree, she plays some dull-*** characters. Include Arbitrage to the list you had compiled*. I saw her promoting I Origins on some late night talk show and can't wait to see it (even though the interview itself was boring). To be honest, I just dig her because she likes doing independent sci-fi flicks.

*Nevermind, just re-read your post. I really need to get some sleep.
Yeah, I think the only reason I liked her is cuz I like her name

HBO has confirmed that the 2 new leads for True Detective season 2 are Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn

annnnnnd lets all together say... Whaaaaaat???

COLIN FARRELL AND VINCE VAUGHN CONFIRMED TO STAR IN THE SECOND SEASON OF HBO’S TRUE DETECTIVE; JUSTIN LIN SET TO DIRECT FIRST TWO EPISODES

The eight-episode hour-long drama is set to begin production later this fall in California.

Logline:
Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.

The series is created and written by Nic Pizzolatto.

Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes.

Cast:

Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vince Vaughn as Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Additional casting will be announced as it is confirmed.

^^^ Eh, I'm willing to give it a chance. VV's pretty much been mailing it in lately, but has shown in the past he can act. I think he can pull this off, especially if his chemistry with Farrell ends up being good.

I'm not mad at it. I like them both.

Interested to see Vince do something serious again. Lets see if he still has it.

this is fricken great.

Did anybody read my True Detective post from a day before that was announced....

By the way, I saw Swingers recently. There are PLENTY of scenes in that movie that still hold up, and in an exceptional manner. Like this:

One of the most uncomfortable scenes in any movie I've ever seen. I remember seeing it in the theater and cringing through that whole scene.

Heck nah dude. I was so out of place. I was only a kid still. I had no business being there.

But I'm pretty sure this is a BIG reason I like the movie so much. Nobody really likes Eyes Wide Shut

He knows he's absolutely ******, but he just keeps going anyway. And then the "don't ever call here again" confirmation. Maaaan.

this is fricken great.

I'm glad someone likes it... I saw it while here at work so I couldn't sit & watch. Caught like the first 15-20 mins (maybe 30) & will watch it in it's entirety tonight or tomorrow.

I had to get used to the soundtrack because I first I didn't think it fit but then found it to work surprisingly well.

CBS should have just gone straight to John Oliver... however, not only does he likely prefer unfiltered content and more room for creativity, I think he's better suited for that style anyway. Made for this forum too.

Clever name, and less is more... only on once a week, gives writers more of a window to get everything down and craft the set-ups perfectly. Of course, Oliver too.

I'm pretty sure Colbert is gonna thrive for the next 20 years.

Not knocking Oliver, he's great especially now with this mix between Lewis Black ranting and Jon Stewart wittiness, but he was not ready for that, taking over for Letterman.

Colbert is going to be awesome. It's not a knock on Oliver, but he wouldn't fit as well on CBS and that would be risky to put him there... much worse than when NBC put Conan on.

Colbert also paid his dues and has built up a great fanbase and has been highly respected and regarded for years.
