Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I'm covering the New York Film Festival - tomorrow I'll be seeing Whiplash and Gone Girl if all goes as planned and this cold I have doesn't get worse tomorrow.

Your rant reassures me on my stance of never watching too many trailers or reading too much info about a film I'm looking forward to.

I've seen that one trailer of Interstellar with the MM voiceover and other than that all I've seen are posters in the subway. This thread mostly keeps me aware of the stuff I'd like and a few other sites.

Blackhat looks cool. Not buying Hemsworth as a hacker though  I mean look at him already in a fight scene (not saying all hackers have to be weak nerds but c'mon).

any of yall checking out How to Get Away with Murder tonight on ABC? I've been looking forward to it for a while now, but I just hope it doesn't feel like Scandal...I think it has the same producers.

I don't watch Scandal but I know it's reputation and demographic, we'll see. Viola Davis is a hell of an actress so I'm excited.

new michael mann film :pimp:

eff watching too many trailers and i damn sure don't watch any featurettes before i see a movie. really stupid that they put the football field exploding/caving in for the dark knight trailer. studios do that crap all the time nowadays.

Scandal didn't start out feeling like what people described about Grey's Anatomy to me. It really started getting over melodramatic this past season & the later portion of the season previous. I may stop watching Scandal this season.

I love Viola Davis too however the show is written & exec produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey's & Scandal). I have a feeling it will start off fine but if the ratings dip, it will get night time soap operaish real fast...

So let me get this straight....

Shonda Rimes Produced: Greys Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder?

Those 3 shows come on back to back to back.
That must be a nice ego stroke for her, damn girl, get it with your bad self.

Sidenote: Is "Godsford Park" worth watching?

Seems like I've always heard good whispers or something, maybe dejavu

I'll check How To Get Away With Murder. It peaked my interest since I first heard of it months ago. I hope it's nothing like Scandal or Grey's or Private Practice.

also did we talk about Gotham in here yet?

I watched the pilot last night, not bad but I expected more. I think they have a lot of ways to go with bringing in characters and telling back story properly in this pre Batman era. But I'm scared they won't have good enough actors on a FOX TV show to make it hold water.

I was already annoyed by Penguin...we'll see my girlfriend loved it. Hopefully they don't let us down

watched gotham this morning. nothing special. they tried to pack in too many characters imo. will watch a few more.

about to watch scorpion now.

I just watched Obvious Child, starring Jenny Slate - HOLY COW - amazing amazing hilariously self aware film. Go See it NOWWW

Slate is off the charts - she's a comedian who is going through a break through, meets a guy and gets prego - it's not sappy at all, real, great script - go see it!

HTGAWM gripped me. I'm in for the season and foreseeable future unless it jumps the shark.

Nice balance with the students and the complexities of Viola's character. Don't care what anybody says I'd wreck her box

Wow looks like the first Kevin Hart movie I might enjoy.

Looked at the movie title funny wondering if they'd just copy off something but it's a funny concept even if the premise of the job is ridiculous.

 @ the groomsmen and fake adventures. Seem like the type of fake lives dudes desperately create online.

finally saw the drop last night...

tom hardy is so on point playing Bob BUT the story is sort of all over the place and the movie is kind of uneventful...

Shailene Woodley is good in movies like the Descendants, The Fault in Our Stars and White Bird in a Blizzard.

She needs to chill on the Divirgents

Edit: The Movie Poster for White Bird in a Blizzard is so misleading, I didn't watch the movie until now all because of the poster. Definitely not what I thought it was going to be about. Got a nice surprise here

The first episode of How To Get Away With Murder was aiight. Had me intrigued. I don't like the casting of the students though. They look entirely too TVish. Their performances were a little too Soup Operaish too. The students & the carpet carrying scenes kept having me confused because I felt like I missed something in the beginning of the show. Viola Davis was phenomenal though (as always) & she looked great too.

If dudes were singing praises of Gotham. I wrote the show off because the casting is so horrible to me (IMO). Everyone seems to be a TV cast off.

Agree about Shailene Woodley & other young actors like her co-star Miles Teller & Michael B Jordan... They're talking projects for $$$ (tent pole movies) instead of just picking quality projects. Money & fame will come with doing quality work... Look at Ryan Gosling... Can't say it enough... Agents and/or having smart people around you is such a key for these young actors...

The kids were tv-ish a bit I guess. The confusion though is that in the beginning they show them with the dead body and then switch to something like 32 days earlier or w/e. So the dead body scenes are the present and everything about the case and the first day of that class is the past and they're showing you how they lead up to the 4 of them and that dead body.

Saw Gone Girl last night at the Press and Industry screening at the NYFF.

Hell of a film. Darker than anything Fincher has done since Se7en. This would have been a very different film in another directors hands, you can feel that through every scene.

There are 4 stars of this film.

1. Affleck gives just about a career best performance.
2. Rosemund Pike steals the show - she's getting an Oscar nomination for sure. The audience hated her guts and it was brilliant. She's utterly fantastic.
3. Flynn's screenplay should get an oscar nomination too. The script is brilliant.
4. Fincher's vision for the film.

I watched the film blind, meaning I did not read the book prior. At the end, you know you watched something great but you're left confused and quickly feel like you have to analyze so much it gets a bit overwhelming. Gone Girl has so many layers, here's the best way to describe it while still fresh on my mind.

It feels like Flynn's story & screenplay along with Fincher's directing are playing Operation with the sanctity of marriage.
