Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

And as previously mentioned, I saw Whiplash yesterday morning as well at the Press and Industry screening at the 52nd New York FIlm Festival.

WOW.

Blown away by every sense of the word.

It exceeded my ridiculously high expectations and then some. I left questioning if it was my favorite film of the year and it just might be, knocking Boyhood off the #1 pedestal.

Imagine Full Metal Jacket's Gunnery Sergent Hartman going to Julliard to push and try to break the next Buddy Rich.

J.K. Simmons is terrifying, he's so damn good it's shocking. He manipulates the screen, he forces you to hate him because he demands perfection. It's one of the best performances of the year and if the Oscars don't nominate him for best supporting I'll be livid.

Miles Teller is really the future of Hollywood. This is the kid we'll be talking about for the next 30 years. He really knows how to act without over doing it. He plays the "normal" guy roles so well, the way he speaks is real - and the skillful drumming is ridiculous.

There is a drum solo at the end of the film that moved critics to tears. It's an unbelievable film that I implore you all to go see in a few weeks.

Saw Gone Girl last night at the Press and Industry screening at the NYFF.

Hell of a film. Darker than anything Fincher has done since Se7en. This would have been a very different film in another directors hands, you can feel that through every scene.

There are 4 stars of this film.

1. Affleck gives just about a career best performance.
2. Rosemund Pike steals the show - she's getting an Oscar nomination for sure. The audience hated her guts and it was brilliant. She's utterly fantastic.
3. Flynn's screenplay should get an oscar nomination too. The script is brilliant.
4. Fincher's vision for the film.

I watched the film blind, meaning I did not read the book prior. At the end, you know you watched something great but you're left confused and quickly feel like you have to analyze so much it gets a bit overwhelming. Gone Girl has so many layers, here's the best way to describe it while still fresh on my mind.

It feels like Flynn's story & screenplay along with Fincher's directing are playing Operation with the sanctity of marriage.

:smoking definitely need to watch this film.

Was amused last night when I caught the beginning of what I believe was the last Dirty Harry movie - The Dead Pool - and saw a very young looking Liam Neeson and Jim Carrey in the first part of the movie. Carrey played it completely straight as a heroin addicted rock star and Neeson was a sleazy video director. Kind of amusing to see actors in movies before they got big. I have seen Dead Pool before, but I was completely unaware that either of those guys were in the movie.

The "sanctity of marriage" is a myth anyway. There are a few marriages that conform to the ideal, some that are really ****** up and then the majority of marriages fall somewhere in the middle of those extremes. (Sorry, I'm feeling cynical this morning).

when / if you watch the film - you'll understand what I am talking about

Looking forward to the finale of Outlander tonight.

Damn. Only 8 episodes this season? I watched all the episodes so far last week. Show is solid. Lead actress is gorgeous and I really like her character. All the characters she encounters who want to rape her is uncomfortable to watch though. Don't want to see anything bad happen to her.

i honestly can't watch tv shows anymore that aren't comedies. just seems so pointless to me. like you put in all this time and effort just to see how the series ends.

Agree about Shailene Woodley & other young actors like her co-star Miles Teller & Michael B Jordan... They're talking projects for $$$ (tent pole movies) instead of just picking quality projects. Money & fame will come with doing quality work... Look at Ryan Gosling... Can't say it enough... Agents and/or having smart people around you is such a key for these young actors...

I don't mean to sound like a d bag but this is an incredible naive and misinformed statement. Please do your research before making a comment like this.

I'm sure you've heard the saying when it comes to actors "one for the studio, one for me" that's a real thing.

Miles Teller doesn't have a big role in the Divergent franchise but it was a smart career decision to latch onto a franchise. Teller in turn also starred in The Spectacular Now and Whiplash - two indie-ish films that are the best of his career and have been praised by all who have seen in.

Teller's next few films are following a similar pattern - rom com for image with Two Night Stand, superhero franchise in Fantastic Four, potential Oscar campaign for the Boxing film he's doing called Bleed for This, and another project to show his range in a musical with Emma Watson - where he is pairing with his Whiplash director. How is that not a diverse portfolio being built by an actor who is only 27?!?!?

Woodley is already Hollywood's darling thanks to Divergent. I'm a fan of hers but I want to see her challenge herself more. She plays an interesting role in White Bird in a Blizzard, but has tied herself up with all these sequels to the franchise. She is someone who is in danger of getting trapped by a studio. She could end up being in her mid 30's by the time she decides to do real character films that will really earn her praise for acting.

Michael B. Jordan starting getting oscar buzz for his portrayal of Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station, how can you knock him? He's also doing Fantastic Four with Miles, and playing Apollo Creed's nephew in a boxing film called Creed.

Comparing anyone to Gosling is foolish, he is the cream of the crop in Hollywood. But these young actors are on the right path for sure.

Gosling started acting when he was 15, mostly TV stuff. No one knew who he was until The Notebook when girls started fawning over him. After that it was 3 years till he made a film that people saw in Fracture - no one really saw Half Nelson or Stay until after they "found out" who Gosling was and went back to look through his films. Then he took risks and showed everyone how important it is to pick the right director, right script and show your skill in the proper light.

Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Paul Dano, Anton Yelchin and a ton of actors younger than them like Kaitlyn Dever, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland etc etc are the future of Hollywood.

And 9 out of 10 times the ending is a disappointment. I'm with you - with the exception of Game of Thrones. The only drama on TV that I'm all-in on right now. The ride itself on that one is good enough to keep me watching. I'm sure the end -- if they ever get to it -- will have something about it I don't like, but I'm willing to live with it.

Some shows are worth the ride others are like meh. I remember Prison Break being amazing and then it got ridiculous and became a chore. 24 was awesome and a great ride, but even that got ridiculous. I used to like House, but that too got absurd. Fox really gets absurd with a lot of their shows.

I also have to confess (again) that I think Lost scarred me for life. I still want back the 100 hours plus (or whatever it was) I put into that show, so I remain hesitant to get invested in new drama series.

Woodley isn't really that good of an actor.

I don't see it with Teller either. Nothing impressive.

Got hope for Jamie Bell though. Gave Turn another chance and his portrayal is what I'm enjoying the most.

It's the journey not the destination.

It's why I can still love LOST and rank Breaking Bad so highly.

I like Shailene because I liked her in The Descendents. Don't care for miles teller. He has that douchey face though that is good for characters people are supposed to dislike.

I've only seen Miles Teller in rom/com party type movies.
If anybody other than venom said he'd be the
"Future of Hollywood" I'd dismiss it instantly.
I did like him (and the first time I've liked him) in the movie with Zac Efron and Michael B. He seems talented in the aspect of not really needing lines to be written for him as he seems to have the gift of improv (not sure if that's the correct word for film) and his characters do seem believable.
I'll watch this Whiplash and see if I feel any different about him being the Future.

You ought to check her in White Bird in a Blizzard if you liked her snarky *** in the Descendants.
She was dope, the movie was dope.

I'm surprised she got nude but it actually made the movie feel more real because of it.

I've been wanting to check that out. She got nude in it? Did not expect her to be the type to do nude scenes.
