Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Started the black list. It makes that division of the fbi look really weak. They need reddington's help whenever there's an incident or they're helpless. Also convenient reddington always knows someone involved in the crisis. He must be the Kevin Bacon of the crime world.

Yes, the ending answered all the questions and messages that were all thru out the movie especially the ones around the dinner table.

So, back to The Gambler

I will put this in a spoiler since so many will check it this weekend, and should opine all on their own. (I've never seen the OG either so I don't feel this way based on the strength of that one)
I'd say I'm pretty comfortable with any Wahlberg film. I like him and what he is so typically I lean a little toward the positive on anything he is in. Not this time, this film is a complete waste of time. I think he did a superb acting job but, what was the Director/Writer trying to get across in this movie. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this film at all. If you can't give your audience a portion of redemption or reform to wrap up a film like this, then why do it. Ok, everyone has heard of the term "feel good movie" right? Well simply put, this is a "feel bad movie". The whole film, I am feeling one of two ways, Bad or Bad. I was disgusted at how this character completely spits in the face of anyone in his life, family and students alike, and does it in a way where he tells you he is not only aware he is doing it, but that he is going to continue to do it, and then the people in his life let him continue to do it. I understand that maybe his character was not supposed to be likable, even a little bit. This is the thing that made this movie so uncomfortable to watch for me. I will stop there simply because, this film doesn't deserve any more from me.

But let me sneak this in before I quit, in one of the final scenes where he meets Goodmans character at the Korean Underground Casino, he tells the Korean that he owes the money too(who also owns the establishment) that he has enough money in the bag to pay him(the Korean), but not enough to pay him and Goodmans character so, he proceeds to Not only tell the Korean that he is going to place ANOTHER bet, WITH MONEY THAT ISN'T HIS, and that he is going to use those winnings to pay off his other debt to Goodmans character. This would never ever ever ever ever happen, EVER. The Korean basically paid Wahlbergs debt to Goodmans character by allowing him to do this. WTF YO, are you for real Writers/Directors of this stupid *** movie? You really gave us this as an ending. Oh wait, then he tells Goodman "**** you", gets a "good job son" from him, and goes for a jog. Get the **** out of here man, STRAIGHT DOOKIE this movie.

Need to stay out of this thread until I catch whiplash.

Even though you guys are considerate and are reviewing without direct spoilers, I already know I wanna watch so I don't want any other information before I do.

Wanna be amazed by all the details.

im jealous of anyone who gets to watch whiplash for the first time

hopefully it doesnt get overhyped like gotg

I'm not even going to say anything in regards to GoTG. However, I don't think this movie can get over hype because there will be one part that will make the movie worth while even if one thought it wasn't a great movie. I'll stop there ...

Exactly.

If you already know you like one genre over another it makes no sense at all to pit one movie in a genre you like less to a movie in a genre you like more. It's inherently bias. That's what the **** is wrong with that. That's that near Antidope reasoning.

Makes no sense to compare either movie but we might as well end it here. I'm not gonna pretend like you didn't start this off with a reach about ppl who like GotG happen to dislike AS  That just seems like you going out of your way to still hate on GotG.

I had a feeling.

Especially since I watched the OG some time last month just to refresh my mind on how good it is.
huh?
If you know you like a genre more than others it doesn't make sense to compare one movie from the genre you like more to some other random movie in another genre.

It makes less sense to compare it to a movie based off the idea that ppl liked it seemed to not like the other one that you happen to really like while disliking the other.

Example Avengers was a better movie than AS. Facts ...

I thought Birdman was a great movie with great acting and well executed, but I'm sure that movie is not everyone's cup of tea and the majority aren't going to appreciate it.
At this point I think you're kinda just choosing not to understand what I'm saying when it comes to my first reply about you comparing American Sniper to Guardians of the Galaxy.

I've stated pretty clearly why I think it's stupid. No hard feelings.

Selma was great. I'm not sure if it's best film of the year great, but it is fantastic.

David Oyelowo was transcendent in this performance, but I actually thought some of the supporting cast members were even superior.

Carmen Ejogo as Coretta, but Stephan James as John Lewis was the real standout to me.

The actors that played John Lewis and James Forman, being the founders of SNCC and the conflict they had with MLK Jr. and SCLC was phenomenal, and not something that I have seen in other films about the civil rights movement. Not that it entirely matters, but it's insane how Stephan James LOOKED like John Lewis.

There's been a bit of a tussle on whether the film is completely accurate in regards to LBJ and his role that he played in the movement and opposing King. I spent a semester at my university going over the movement, and I'm not saying I know the answers, but I do know that LBJ took his liberties and time in order to support SCLC and King. There was definitely a vast difference in portrayal between LBJ and Kennedy, that much is certain.

Another thing that I loved about the film is how strong they portrayed Coretta. The courage it takes for a woman to put her own life as well as her families life in danger by staying with a man so profound at the time was unprecedented, especially considering how he had marital infidelities that were quite well-known. It's a lesser known fact (well, of course there are those who don't believe it) that MLK was an adulterer, and I felt the film handled it very well. It's not a huge chunk of the film, but it is there.

The film didn't touch me as much as I thought it would, but that is probably because I know that time and era much better than anything else, but it still did get to me at times.

As someone who is in awe of this generation and the power that people had to change the livelihoods of those that were oppressed, along with the nuances of competing groups like the black muslims, SNCC, and SCLC, this is probably as good as we're ever going to get about an actual feature film about this generation.

I saw @Bakajin's review and I agree with it mostly, and I do agree that the grassroots empowerment that Selma had was definitely underplayed, but the mere presence of SNCC, John Lewis, and James Forman were a welcome addition. One thing that I took away from my time studying this era was that the different groups didn't necessarily see eye-to-eye on the approach to overturn their prejudices. SNCC, CORE, SCLC, MFDP, COFO, etc., all played a part in helping achieve the successes in the late-60s, but they definitely had their clashes in terms of ideologies. Were they as radically different as those of say Malcolm X and the black muslims? No, of course not, but they definitely existed. Case and point was the evolution of the John Lewis lead-SNCC to the days of Stokely Carmichael, which became more radical in ideology. This wasn't a film about SNCC (And frankly, although I'd love to see it, a film about SNCC isn't going to make a ton of money), but they were represented here.

For anyone interested in learning more about this movement, there isn't a better documentary than Eyes on the Prize, produced by PBS. Extremely comprehensive, and as engaging as any film you'll ever watch not he subject.

And for any of the readers out there, In Struggle by Clayborne Carson. It heavily revolves around the evolution of SNCC, but does cover the entire era pretty comprehensively. Dense, but well worth the time.

I know this is an extremely hard question to answer for you movie geeks. But If you could only watch ONE of the anticipated 2015 movies this year which one would you chose? :nerd:

You only have minimal trailers, castings, and information to go by.

That's what makes it fun.

Right now... My gut just says Spectre (Bond 24) because of the Christoph Waltz casting and Sam Mendes coming back to direct. I simply CANNOT WAIT for that movie.

Of course there's lots to look forward to this year, but Thats the one for now I would say I'd watch over anything else this year if I was forced to pick.

What about you guys? :nerd:
(Don't be stubborn cp, I know 1 is hard... But stick to the rules, no exceptions  )

Avengers

Funny rck you brought up gone girl because I was literally just in my way here to post further thoughts about the movie.

I just posted this in the Gone Girl thread, but since this is a general movie thread I'll put it in a spoiler to be considerate.

Wanted to hear your guys thoughts.

These are my thoughts on the ending to Gone Girl after a few weeks of thought:

The more we discuss it and the more time that goes by...

The more incredibly genius the ending actually becomes in my mind.

At first I was like whaaaa... That's it? indifferent.gif

But weeks have gone by, I've watched a few reviews, read a few message boards with people discussing the movie, heard you guys break it down in here...
And now I'm like whoa.

That ending was so real it probably flew over many of our heads. Instead of giving us what people "think" they wanted to see, like a cliche death or divorce, we got the ugly/creepy/sad yet ultimately realistic truth as an ending.

Who she become is exactly what a guy like that would come to like. There's obviously a reason Ben started to cheat on her. That boring, been there done that phase of marriage got to him. That kind goody too shoes act by the wife is something most guys would probably get bored by quick.

As sickening as it is, the fact that she did turn into such an evil ***** probably brought back all the attraction and feelings he had for her back when they first met. It was like the honeymoon stage of your relationship coming back, except in the most twisted and u comfortable fashion.

We're most attracted and intrigued in our companions when we first meet them because we have so much to learn about them.

Ben thought he had learned everything there is to know about his wife, so it just became stale like most relationships do.

In a way he was back to trying to figure out who she was again, and that intrigue was all back.

It's clear at the end that no matter what words he was saying to his sister, the truth was he WANTED to stay with her.

There may have not been very many options, but there were still options nonetheless.

He chose to stay... So it said it all.

And after a few weeks of thinking about it...it makes sense, based on who he was throughout the movie and who he was when he met her.

Perfect ending man.
Movie just became even more outstanding in my eyes.

Will cop that blu ray with no hesitation :pimp:

Pls respond

doubt it bruh ... Ben also needs to play a part that's not him... The one she liked and that's hard work ....

However, if what you stated is true ... It will be safe to say that it will be short lived. Eventually they will get to the point the movie was about ...

Sunshnine had such potential as a sci fi save the world space flick but then turned in to such a lame horror flick in space towards the end :smh:

My roommate is watching xmen origins wolverine right now. Who signed off on this? This is so bad. Spit in the face of X-men fans world wide :smh:

Personally I don't think that movie is as bad as most everyone makes it out to be. It wasn't great by any stretch, but I found it entertaining enough. Maybe it/ because I'm not a hard core X-men fan.

Wifey & I caught Olive Kitteridge on HBO this afternoon. This 2 part mini series or movie based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book was solid. Great performance from Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, & even the bit role from Bill Murray... John Gallagher from Newsroom & Short Term was in it too...

Caught Big Hero 6 and the latest Transformers movie.

Big Hero 6 was very good.

Transformers was cool.
