Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Accused of being shallow, which isn't untrue. My interpretation is that 'Focus' is meant to be a light watch, sipping on a nice Malbec to pair with the Argentina scenes after a long 80-hour work week. Let Will Smith and Margot Robbie entertain. The latter did not particularly steal the show, but she wasn't a bad actress either. That assessment is obviously looks aside, as many become captivated by the blonde's bombshell's aesthetic features.
Whether predictable or not, there were enough twists and turns to keep me entertained. Teasing the "Toledo Panic Button" earlier in the film and incorporating it to the ending. Also revealing Nicky's father, who groomed him for this particular con man trade. Ficarra/Requa attempt to explore some deeper themes and plot lines. Nicky's sense of abandonment forged by his father. Him replaying that with Jess in New Orleans.
Another planned surprise is actually learning Owens is Nicky's father. You can see it in hindsight with the personal details Nicky reveals to Jess during "pillow talk." Hard-nosed, no-nonsense kind of guy is Nicky's father, like Owens. Which is all part of the con. Owens telling Garriga, "I don't like him" and "I don't trust him." Owens' whole rant about the problem with your generation. Sarcasm, technologically-reliant, lazy, etc.
Enjoyed the Superdome scene. Exploring the power of suggestion, forcing Tse to unconsciously absorb the number 55 throughout the day. The scene prior hinting Nicky's issue with gambling. Jess being involved with the con unknowingly, her surprise and reaction necessary elements to fool Tse.
I also found Nicky's explanation in seducing women near the ending to be applicable and accurate in real life. The sociological steps and process he unwinds in front of Garriga, Owens, Jess. "Women like shared history." Breaking the barrier with Farhad. "Exploring emotion." In the Malbec scene, testing Jess' reaction to Nicky's forced and at the time fraudulent vulnerability.
