Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

What to watch today. The Gift or Everest?
In theaters? Everest. That's more important to catch in theaters than The Gift.

Ended up watching both. Wasn't too impressed with either. The cinematography was top notch for Everest of course but the story has been told a million times and i got bored with it quickly, which took away from the visuals. The Gift was basically a lifetime movie with good actors hahaha. Both entertaining, but easily netflix and chill-able instead of go to a theater and pay for drinks, tickets, and not get top-able.

Thought The Martian was really good

Liked how the science was important but not too much of a focus. I'm sure there are holes in it but it was "believable" enough for a movie

After Project Greenlight, I'm looking forward to seeing The Leisure Class.

A small part of me( and a character flaw I hate to admit) wants the movie to suck because the Director they chose is a total douche.

Edit: but I'm definitely impressed by him

Breaking Bad the GOAT.

Not Quite

 No way in hell is The Sopranos better than Breaking Bad.

Finale wasn't up to par and the series didn't finish anywhere as strong.

The the all-time great shows, you end up picking one or two things that separate your favorites or the best.

All the all-time greats have complex themes, great acting, strong writing, and so on. But you start to emphasize a few things that one did better than the other.

Cinematography, for example, is one area where Breaking Bad trumps The Sopranos. And it's not that The Sopranos was bad by any means, but that was something BB excelled in.

Breaking Bad was also more suspense and action oriented, so each episode felt a little more important and powerful. The Sopranos, like Mad Men, was more of a slow build and sometimes used an episode to build up to future events more than others.

I'm biased towards The Sopranos because I love all things Mafia related but If the actress that played Tony's mom didn't die, the story arc would have been something epic :smh:

My only gripe with BB is that it was on a basic cable network channel.

Those profanity & buss it open restrictions :frown:

The Sopranos was the groundbreaker. The hour long drama series wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't for The Sopranos.

We disagree about the series finale. I prefer TS finale over the BBad's where everything magically fell into place.

Don't get me wrong, Breaking Bad is excellent. It's #2 on my list.

That just shows how great Breaking Bad was.

BBad didn't have the luxury of cursing, nudity or sexual content to attract audiences, yet still had everyone ob the edge of their seats weekly.

GoT rounds out my top 3 but S5 left me skeptical. Really interested to see how D&D handle S6 w/o much original material from GRRM.

I'm sorry but no. Hr long drama series existed before The Sopranos.

Regardless, just cuz something was first doesn't mean it was the best.

so then Sopranos really didn't set the trend  it just popularized HBO

There were even others before ER, like Hills Street Blues for example. I think you could say that the Sopranos took the format to a new level, but it didn't create it.

I doubt many of you have seen it, but for Disney Channel show, Gravity Falls is pretty awesome.

He was speaking about cable shows.

And The Sopranos was groundbreaking and showed that you could basically tell an epic, cinematic story over the course of several seasons on TV and people will watch it. Oz was actually the first major HBO drama like that, but The Sopranos showed that television could be THE medium to tell these kind of stories for the 21st century. You didn't have to squeeze in all your characters, story, ideas, into a 2 hour movie, you could explore it all over the course of years

If anyone is interested in this kind of stuff, Alan Sepinwall's "The Revolution Was Televised" Amazon product ASIN 1476739676 is a GREAT  history of the most important shows on television.

My view is that, basically, you can't declare a GOAT TV show. Once you get into the top tier, with things like the Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Game of Thrones, the quality is so objectively good that where a particular individual ranks them is going to come down to more subjective factors like preference for subject matter, actors, how the shows are shot. So, I think it is fully justifiable for the Sopranos to be the GOAT for one person, but BB to be the GOAT for someone else.

Pretty much how I feel.

Breaking bad did some things far better than The Sopranos, where some might prefer what The Sopranos did instead.
