Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Room was great.

Brie Larson was stellar. That Tremblay kid was scary good. I mean the writing was there for him but it was impressive how he pulled off being a kid that has no sense of the outside world or other concepts that weren't Room, his mom, Old Nick, and the skyline. Like that's a complicated role when you think about it.

The movie is depressing though or maybe it was just me vibing with how sad this story managed to be.

Whole thing is driven by Larson and Tremblay. She is just flexing with her range in this. Make you feel like you're empathic the way you feel her anger, sadness, brief happiness, concern for her child, and the cocktail of pptsd, depression and w/e other syndromes the sum of 7 years can have a toll on a person. I know what she was a good actress but she showed and proved with when she's given great material to work with.

I totally see why she's winning all the awards for best actress.

7/8

Damn, still got to check out Room.

Been a fan of Brie's since she was on US of Tara but I've only seen her in one film (which was The Gambler).

Plot really caught me off guard. Jack Black settles in nicely next to the weirdness.

That miles Davis joint looks LIT! I hate to say it though, but I wish they would have went with an unknown talent to play him. I just can't remove myself from
Thinking that's just don cheadle lol.

Same with seeing Cuba play OJ. Dog, you're Cuba gooding JR. I don't remotely imagine that's OJ no matter how well his part is written or how well he performs the role

^ You thought that during Hotel Rwanada? To me Cheadle is a really good actor.

Trailer for Miles Ahead looks great :smokin

Yeah, I agree on Don "Rocket" Cheadle being a good actor.

Now that you point that out, I didn't feel that way for Rwanda. Cheadle is def one of the best actors with the amount of range he can display. I think it's just his hair or something makes it seem like he's doing a sketch on SNL as Miles Davis lol.

That's just my initial thought based off the trailer. I'm sure he'll kill it and get high praise

I get it though. There are some actors where all you see is them. It's usually those that are more movie star than actor.

I seen enough of Don in movies and interviews to tell he's acting but it can be subtle.

Like it's got that way for me with Tom Cruise. I haven't seen him in a movie where he was showing his range in a long time

Tropic Thunder. Aside from that, he's just playing variations of Tom Cruise.

 I almost don't want to count comedies but yeah he was funny in that and strayed from his usual roles.

Aren't they all that, tho?

Every time I see Julia Roberts, she's Julia.
Every time I see George Clooney, he's George Clooney.
Denzel is Denzel.

Part of it is they last long enough for you to remember, and do enough throwaway films where they don't have to change who or what they are.

Leo is ALWAYS some sort of variant. Revenant, Wolf of Wall Street, Gilbert Grape, Departed, Blood Diamond, Catch Me If You Can, he's always slightly different. He does very few "that's just Leo" roles.

Cruise has been Ethan Hunt 52 times, and only has 5 Mission Impossible Films. Reacher, Day and Night, the Groundhog day one he did with Blunt, it's always Cruise, as Hunt, with a new title.

Iono, maybe I'm off. Maybe it's a respect thing. Like I was going to mention Pitt with George and Julia, but you know what, Brad (to me) is different. Kalifornia, True Romance, Seven, Thelma and Louise, Fight Club, he's been so many versions, he's only "Brad Pitt" in the Ocean's movies.

I agree with that, with a couple exceptions. The only huge stars right now that I feel can "disappear" into roles are DDL and Bale. RDJ used to be like that, but not anymore I don't think.

Seeing more and more of these stupid Gods of Egypt commercials, hope it's a massive flop.

No.

At least not to the extent I'm talking about.

And  @ the list you just named. Those are movie stars. Those are the ppl we expect to be them or a slightly altered version of themselves in every movie they star in.

To me that's not the same with other great actors.

Cruise was somebody else in Born on the 4th of July. It's rarer with him. I feel age is a factor as well. Pacino was great but after a while like Sam, Tommy Lee, Hackman, Nicholson they go to their bread and butter.

Like Phillip Seymour Hoffman would dive in to his characters. DDL is an obvious example. Gary Oldman immersed himself. Same with prime De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. We see it with Christian Bale a lot.

I'm not saying these guys completely become new ppl every single role but they do it more often than the rest but I guess that's just talent and skill.

You kinda agreed with me tho.

"Part of it is they last long enough to remember and do throwaway films, etc."

That's Sam, DeNiro, Pacino and so on. Tommy Lee. At first he was great, now you look back, he was just himself the whole time.

I was making a distinction between really good actors and just plain movie stars.

Not every movie star use to be a good/great actor.

George Clooney imo was never some amazing talent. I aint even know he was an Oscar winner until recently. To me his entire career he's been 40+ with grayish hair playing himself

I do agree with you about when they get older and they stick to playing themselves more.
