From the MLB season thread. Don't know anything about those guys, but I'm all for stockpiling.
They just had to get rid of my guy, huh?

Sorry?  I liked both of them, but what are we expecting at this point ya know? Hopefully the prospects pan out.
Fister, Pauley dealt to Tigers
It looks like the deal will be announced officially later this morning, but by all accounts it's done: outfielder Casper Wells, left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush, third-base prosect Francisco Martinez and a player to be named (which I hear could be a significant piece of this deal) going to Seattle from Detroit for Doug Fister and David Pauley.

It's tough to give up a guy like Fister, and Pauley is a valuable piece, but I'd say on first glance, the Mariners got a decent haul. Martinez is the Tigers' No. 4-rated prospect by Baseball America. In 91 games at Double-A this year, he's hitting .282 with a .319 on-base and .405 slugging. He has seven homers and 46 RBIs. Martinez, who is just 20, has 18 errors. In their scouting report, Baseball America wrote: "He has all the raw tools of a prototypical third baseman, with the added bonus of above-average speed. With a quick bat and a flat swing path, he produces a lot of hard groundballs and line drives. While he hit just three homers in 2010, he should have solid over-the-fence power as he continues to physically mature and learns to deal with more experienced pitchers."

It needed to happen but I'll miss Fister though, I'll be rooting for him in Detroit

and I don't follow the minors at all so I have no clue on any of these guys but stole this tidbit from a M's forum on the three prospects
Wells may still have some potential.  He's 26, plays LF/RF and is a right handed hitter who can hit lefties pretty well.  He doesn't look like much more than a platoon guy or 4th OF to me, but who knows.  His output on offense would seem to be more than the Mariners are getting from LF this season, and with Cust gone, my guess is Carp will move to DH and they will use Wells in LF for a while.

Furbush is a 25-year-old lefty who pitched well in AAA this year and was doing so-so with Detroit...  his ERA is 3.62 in 32 IP but his WHIP is 1.55 and he has allowed 5 HRs.  My guess is he will be put right into the M's rotation if they find a deal for Bedard, meaning our rotation will be Hernandez, Pineda, Vargas, Beavan, Furbush.

Francisco Martinez is a 3B prospect who is 20 and at the AA level.  He bats right handed, has an OPS of .724 this year, and a career OPS of .690 in the minors.  Some of the commentors at Prospect Insider were excited that Martinez was included in the deal, FWIW.

He's been everything we've all thought/hoped he be so far...on both sides of the ball too...which is great because he definitely had some doubters

I think he's been more than what a lot of us expected... certainly more than what I expected. Then again, I didn't know what to expect...
Erik Bedard dealt to Red Sox
SEATTLE -- The Boston Red Sox have added a much-needed starter after an earlier trade fell through, acquiring oft-injured left-hander Erik Bedard from the Seattle Mariners in a three-team trade.

The Red Sox, whose deal for Oakland's Rich Harden fell apart late Saturday night, also got right-hander Josh Fields, a 2008 first-round draft pick.

Boston sent catcher Tim Federowicz and right-handers Juan Rodriguez and Stephen Fife to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who dealt OF Trayvon Robinson and OF Chih-Hsien Chiang to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox then sent those two prospects to Seattle.

"We talked with a few other clubs but in the end we thought this was the one that made sense," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said.

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said he'd been talking to Boston about "a number of different things."

"They had a little bit of a surplus of catching, and Federowicz is somebody we have watched a lot in Double-A," Colletti said. "He is a very good defensive player and a good leader. Offensively, he is still a work in progress. We started with him. AL East-leading Boston was in need of a starter to help shore up its rotation with Daisuke Matsuzaka out for the season and Clay Buchholz on the disabled list.

The Mariners sent Baltimore five players for Bedard before the 2008 season but he has been a bust because of injuries.

Bedard was 15-14 with a 3.31 ERA in 46 appearances with the Mariners. He missed most of the 2009 season and all of 2010 after left shoulder surgery. He was 4-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 16 starts this season but spent most of July on the disabled list (knee).

Fields, 25, the 20th player taken in the 2008 draft out of Georgia, was 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA for Double-A Jackson and 0-0 with a 6.23 ERA in nine games for Triple-A Tacoma.

"We've been talking Chiang for a while. Robinson came in a couple hours (before the deadline) as we discussed it," Zduriencik said. "He was the guy we settled on."

The Mariners have been struggling offensively -- the Mariners designated Jack Cust for assignment Friday -- and both 23-year-old prospects have power potential.

Robinson is hitting .293 with 26 home runs and 71 RBI for Triple-A Albuquerque.

"He'll go to Tacoma and we'll watch him there," said Zduriencik, when asked if Robinson was close to a promotion. "We'll see what happens."

Chiang is hitting .338 with 36 doubles, 18 home runs and 76 RBIs in 87 games for Double-A Portland.

It seems like we got a pretty good deal. It's hard because I don't follow minor league ball at all really. Ultimately, getting what we can for Bedard is good since someone actually wanted him. Keep stockpiling those bats and in a year or so the M's will have a nicely balance club...I hope.

Truth, getting anything for Bedard at this point is a plus...some of these young bats will to come benefit..they have to

Lately I've been loving what Carp's been doing with his opportunity to play...which he should have had a while ago anyways

Although the team sucks Ackley and Carp good play keeps me hopeful and still watching

I really like that Bedard deal for the M's...Robinson (26 HR this season at AAA, great SB potential) and Chiang (IMO just watching the Futures game, you can tell he has a nice approach) are both very promising offensive threats. Fields was expendable.

If either of those guys can make it to the big league roster next season, they'll have a very exciting lineup.

Nice game by Beavan tonight

Glad to see Smoak get some hits when he wasn't even supposed to play. Hopefully he can get some consistency and get on a good streak

Ack, Carp and Smoak is going to be a nice trio for the future

Kinda having hopes that Casper will kick-start the bats. Ack and Smoak though... we'll need that to continue.

Trades looked ok, I suppose. Bedard, if he can keep it up, can always re-sign this off-season.
