If the Rangers land Greinke, they are expected to abandon their pursuit of Hamilton. And if that occurs, the source says the Mariners and Hamilton would likely get a deal done "very soon" after.
But...

In a late-afternoon meeting with reporters, Zduriencik didn't seem optimistic about his chances of landing a top free agent before he leaves here Thursday morning

Swish and Bourn are also mentioned in there

Vargas off to the Angels in exchange for Morales. First thought was why trade within the same division, but thinking about it a bit more, Morales is pretty dang underrated. He can hit for power and had a monster year like 3 years ago. 5th in MVP votes. Broke his ankle and people forgot about him. Could be a steal.

Two AL West clubs have agreed to a trade. The Seattle Mariners will acquire first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales. In return, the Los Angeles Angels will receive starting pitcher Jason Vargas. The Mariners announced the move as official Wednesday afternoon.

Morales, 29, hit .273/.320/.467 with 22 homers, 73 RBI and 61 runs in 522 plate appearances last season. It was his first MLB game action since breaking his leg in May of 2010. In 2009, Morales finished fifth in AL MVP voting when he hit .306/.355/.569 with 34 homers and 108 RBI. So he's clearly capable of big numbers.

“We have been focused on adding offense this off-season, and feel that Kendrys will be a middle-of-the-order bat for us. He's a switch-hitter with power who has played, and hit, in the AL West,” Mariners general manager Jac Zduriencik said in a statement. “He's familiar with the teams and parks and is a proven run-producer. We hate to part with Jason, and really appreciate everything he's done for us, but we are in a situation where we had to give up talent to acquire talent.”

Vargas, a 29-year-old left-hander, was 14-11 with a 3.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 141 strikeouts in 217 1/3 innings pitched last season. He's actually a decently useful pitcher, though the Mariners could afford to spare him in adding offensive help.

With Vargas out of the picture, the Mariners still line up like so: Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Erasmo Ramirez, Blake Beaven and Hector Noesi. Also note that pitching prospects Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker are highly-touted and will be added to the mix at some point.

Offensively, the Mariners appear to have replaced Justin Smoak. It is unlikely they'll plan on using Jesus Montero behind the plate everyday, so he'll need to be the DH while John Jaso serves as the primary catcher. That leaves Morales to play first base and Smoak without a spot in the order.

I wonder how Vargas will do not pitching in Safeco anymore. He was automatic giving up bombs on the road.

I like the move, a good bat and that probably means Iwakuma moves to the #2 spot. I was hoping if they had to choose they would keep him

Heard a little bit of Jack Z on my drive home and it sounds like the M's are going to remain patient. There in it for the long haul. Kendrys was a great start.

*sigh... you guys are gonna enjoy Kendrys in the middle of your line-up. He's pretty much healthy now and should even have a better year with you guys now that he got his timing back. Very underrated player. Will continue to pull for him (unless he plays against the Angels)

I dunno what to think about Kendrys, but despite his home/away record, it was nice having Vargas eat up some innings. But hey, if he helps get our offense going... bring it on.

This is what I got to thinking. I'm pretty excited about that because he can be a top notch player and they got him relatively cheap.

Morales instantly becomes our best hitter, IMO, contingent on his health of course. Great trade by Seattle...Vargas was solid in Seattle but he's a #4 starter..Morales is a middle of the lineup type of bat. My only concern is keeping him long term. Scott Boras is his agent

 It's Smoaks last chance regardless

And we definitely have room for Bourn in the OF. Put him leadoff or #2 in the lineup

Anyone still think they go after Bourn as well?
I don't think they're done making moves, but I'm not sure exactly how Bourn would fit.
I thought he kinda would. Lead off spot and an outfielder are some gaps they can fill. Havent been able to depend on Guti for a couple years. His contract is up soon I think? I think it would be a nice move depending on price

Probably not an everyday player. Just another veteran presence to add to the mix of a young outfield and for some insurance for Guti. Proven pinch-hitter. Not a horrible move, but not a great one either. He's 40.

Move doesnt sway me either way.

Bonderman going to be worth any significant value to this team?

I kinda used to beast with him in MVP Baseball back in the day

Well, he's only 30, but he also has had a lot of arm problems in his career. He's worth the invite, but I don't have high expectations. Might be a viable 5th spot guy if his arm stays together.

:smh: Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong

"Raul Ibanez bobblehead night! Jason Bay t-shirt night! Edgar Martinez bat night!"

Still can't believe we signed Willie Mays as our 4th OF

Justin Upton rejected a deal that had him coming to the M's. :smh:

I don't get why he didn't want to come here. He would've been an instant fan favorite.

I missed this, but the M's were willing to part with Taijuan Walker, Nick Franklin, Charlie Furbush, and Stephen Pryor for Upton!?  I'm glad he rejected it!

I kind of am too, but that bat would've been huge! He's a young star who probably hasn't peaked yet. If they can't get Upton then who else would they get that has that upside/value? Slim pickings.
