The Official Military Thread. Vol 1

How many sailors does it take to get Marine boots on ground?

How many part-timers aka reservists have deployed or made the ultimate sacrifice?

Again, just like the general populace, many in the military have no clue.

That's why it's good to talk to others in another rate, in other services and know what your and the other services role/functions are.

My cousin is in the navy. It seems like he's more on a backpacking trip then anything else.
My cousin lives in the Bay Area.

I'll list the places I know he's gone starting with boot

-Chicago
-San Diego
-lemoore (came home to visit every weekend)
-came home
-went to Japan
-Philippines for the typhoon relief
-Thailand to train. But we know what really went down
-Hong kong
-back to Japan
-back home
-Italy
-now is currently doing like a euro trip
- he visits London, Spain, Rome, Prague, regularly with his homies in the service.

But then again my other cousin who is in the military with the same job. And he's been deployed to the middle east like 3 times.

I wished I joined the military when I was younger and was traveling like my cousin who got to see all those places.

But not like my other one who is from San diego and has only seen Texas and the Middle East.

Ships have to dock and refuel. Personnel have to decompress, R&R, etc.

The Navy is an interesting institution. It's not an easy life though. Shore/sea duty.

interservice 'rivalry' is childish and stupid
???? If you take it that as one branch hates the other then yes. However, I don't see what you are talking about. You can go deeper and find there's always rivalry within the branches. Example infantry vs administration etc. Its all in fund and promotes better performance and unity. Just cause you talk and like to out due the other doesn't mean you wish them I'll or think any less. If that's someone way of thinking then yes is stupid and childish as the person thinking it.

being in the AF and seeing what all my Navy homies get into it doesn't look like that bad of a gig at all. actually thinking about switching over to either Army or Navy once my contract is up with the AF

Agreed. But it's human nature to be competitive or disparage others. Kind of like the big Navy/Army NCAA football game every year. It is what it is.

You got 50-70 year olds in Congress still clinging to party ties instead of trying to accomplish positive results for the American people.

My first MOS' school was at Fort Meade and joint. So the inter service rivalry was in effect with a bunch of newly recruited fools.

One thing I'll give my AF and Navy brethren is they occasionally have some real dimes especially the AF. But you can find these diamonds occasionally in all of the services, it just seems a greater chance in those less "dangerous" services.

And emjae, accelerate your life lol. Hopefully they let you keep your stripes. Again, a certain service tends to start you back at square one or two when you switch services. I had a buddy who did a tour as a soldier and got out as a specialist. Came over to the USMC and had to settle for PFC and having to go through boot camp again.

I'm at MacDill. I'm always like I joined the wrong service lol when I go to the gym, PX, etc. Again, not saying there aren't fine Marine women, there are. But I've never seen a greater gathering than on a Navy ship or Air Force post.

man yall tripping haha. these days Army has all of the chicks. when I was in Korea there was NO shortage of decent females. AF chicks ain't really down to earth a lot of Em got a Complex because it ain't a lot of em, plus we way less diverse. Navy and Army got so many mane I didn't k ow what the hell was going on haha. Marines do too but they all seem to be light skin chicks or Spanish... as for the switching thing yea I hope I can keep my PG too. hopefully I make staff this year that would be great seeing as I've been in almost 7 years now (smh)

Real life I respect all branches, I listen to the cross branch jokes and they don't bother me because beneath it all we all know what each branch brings to the table. I've never been about making them, but some are funny. I'm Navy, and I've never been offended by any of the jokes. But if I had to do all over again I would've went Air Force because I'm married and to me the Air Force has a better quality of life for the family. From my experiences the bases are nicer, there are more programs for the family, the exchanges and commissaries, etc... the Air Force people have it pretty sweet. My dad and uncles were Army and to me that life along with Marines life is harder in my opinion and I knew at a very young age that I wasn't cut out for it. That's hard living. I respect all of the ground pounders. But at the same time, Navy life isn't too bad, I'd take waiting in line at Starbucks on the carrier than going to the field everyday of the week.

exactly. i was going to say that too but left it alone.

to add
ive never heard an AF or Navy person joke about other braches. not saying it doesnt happen but ive never seen it.

the times i have heard it, it was in retaliation from something an Army or Marine said

like, how is 'chair force' even considered a put down?

** funny story **

so in tech school, we were doing our morning run. you know how the AF do it, our runs are pretty much a light jog at your own pace but in a group. the Army or Marines (cant remember which) run in step with a leader.

well the track was being repaired so we had to share a part of the street to run on with some Army or Marine guys

these dudes were offended to have to share running space with AF guys. like straight up repulsed.

so the leader decides to flex.
he runs off course, behind a building and climbed in and out of a garbage bin.

since they have to follow each other when they run they had to follow him

they all jumped out, got back on the street high fiving each other and sticking out their chests like they just 1 upped us

we just shook our heads, laughed, and kept running

like, you won man.
you won.

for family I guess... but even though depending on what your job is you won't be around a lot. USAF is not in the upper echelon of quality of life like everybody thinks it is. depends on what base you're at... At misawa is in The AF has terrible dorms and it's an AF base... Navy dorms were like a damn hotel room and so was the Army's. it's all about location man.

Starbucks on an A/C carrier?! smh bare my got running water in the warehouse I work in

where'd you go to Tech School at that sounds oddly familiar hahah

Yeah, Air Force have air conditioned combat utilities. It helps for those rare deployments to a well protected base over seas. They get hazard pay for being at other services base, lol.

I'm going to be real. I respect the AF Community College program, emphasis on technical knowledge (definitely won't be on tactical unless you're a SF, etc.), technical tests for promotion (I wish the Marines would add that but keep the current promotion system). The Marine Corps doesn't really place a lot of emphasis on technical mastery or education compared to the Navy/Air Force. It's a PITA just to get tuition assistance. I had a soldier who showed me their TA process and I was like wow so much easier and less of a hassle. But it's all about budgets, mission, etc.

But I can't really say there bases are better. I've only been to three: MacDill, Kadina and Yakota (oops and the one in Phoenix). I just think the Army and Corps have older bases so the cost of refurbishment and age are probably why that perception is there.

Honesty just depends on the job in the Air Force, 9 Yrs Security Forces, I hated my job, and to be honest not family oriented only if your Security Forces or PJ, I hated the bases they stationed me at. if I could go back I would have gone medical or logistics. I will be honest they do take care of us barracks/ dorm wise. I remember I was stationed in Montana, I had a nice dorm with a 2 closets, storage room and a door bell. And the Air Force does push education on you, can't really get a good EPR unless you have education.

we don't get hazard pay for being at other bases haha... believe me mane I've been everywhere and never got paid a red cent more for being in "substandard living conditions" more than SecForces and our special tactics guys have tactical training believe me... look up RED HORSE. our promotion system is a sham... don't let it fool you. it looks like a good process on the outside but when you're actually subject to it and don't fit the mold that certain folks that rate you want you to... it can be very hard to promote. the Air Force really doesn't (or didn't use to) place value in actual work knowledge and ethic... it's more of a popularity contest / politics type deal. now they are changing it but we will see how that goes. CCAF is cool. not really a fan of school but it's a nice program

Keesler

i may have told that story on here before

i was PMEL so my tech school was 1 year

332nd haha. i was at Kessler for my first tech school. avionics. that base is a diamond in the rough mane I'd love to be there as permanent party. I loved that base

I was being facetious when I posted. I know the truth on the myths I posted.

I didn't say I respected your promotion system. I said I like its emphasis on technical proficiency. I know all bout it. Two CMSgt put me on game.

I've also reiterated my respect for SFs and PJs.

when I put the haha on the end it denotes that it was a light hearted post my G as I could tell you weren't being serious. I never said anything about respecting the Promo system either... just put my 2 cents in on it as a person that has to deal with it...

on the SF, PJ thing I was saying that a good deal of us in other jobs have immense tactical training as well due to certain assignments and positions (RED Horse units for example.) not taking away from any of your points or tryna shade out on you... just putting my .02 in as an airman haha.

i went from Keesler to stationed at Eglin for 3 years so you can say i got lucky and had it pretty good

im now back on Keesler as a civilian after being with Homeland Security for 8 years. i must say DoD gets treated like crap compared to Homeland.

DoD is constantly trying to cut back and do more with less while Homeland is damn near wiping their ***** with dollar bills

im trying to get back to Homeland. working on base feels like the police is always watching me

plus the agency i worked for with Homeland didnt drug test, man, i need to get back to that ASAP
