Cleveland Cavaliers win 2013 NBA draft lottery

[wuote]Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Kansas shooting guard Ben McLemore are considered the favorites for the pick, but Cleveland's biggest weakness last season was at small forward, the position of Georgetown's Otto Porter.

"This isn't a draft where there's a clear-cut obvious no-holds barred No. 1 choice," Dan Gilbert said in a teleconference. "Obviously we're going to have workouts between now and the draft. I don't think there's a direction that franchise is leaning."

Nick Gilbert was the Cavaliers' representative for the lottery for the third consecutive year. And he's 2-for-3 in getting the first overall pick.

Nick Gilbert has the nerve disorder neurofibromatosis, which causes tumors to grow in his body. He has become a rallying point for the draft lottery in recent years.

"The excitement on his face, that was something special," Dan Gilbert said. "That was probably my favorite part of this process."

The Cavaliers previously selected first overall in 2003, when they drafted LeBron James. When he left in 2010 for the Miami Heat, the franchise was devastated. Two top picks in three years since helps.

"It's been a long three years for the franchise, but we've come through it," Gilbert said. "We said all along that we're going to build this primarily through the draft. We wanted to focus on getting a handful of really strong people ... and build the franchise around them."[/quote]

Obama spoke on the Cavaliers with CBS this week while campaigning....

"Byron [Scott] is a fine coach, and does a great job, Kyrie not just met expectations, he exceeded them. He showed what he could do last year, and despite occasional injuries, he’s just a solid player that doesn’t make a lot of rookie mistakes, has a shot, good off the dribble, knows how to find the open man, it’s a lot of talent at the point guard position, (the Cavs) just need to round it out."

Dion Waiters | Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Dion Waiters with the No. 4 pick in the 2012 NBA draft and his struggles from the Las Vegas Summer League to the NBA preseason continue.

Waiters was just 1-for-7 from the floor against Milwaukee and he had four turnovers. According to The Plain Dealer, head coach Byron Scott was not happy with the rookie during a timeout in the fourth quarter.

"You've got to know the plays," Scott said.

In two preseason games, Waiters is shooting 30.8 percent from the floor as he's not driving to the bucket.

C.J. Miles has played well so far and he will likely be the starting shooting guard when the regular season tips off.

WELCOME TO CLEVELAND DION WAITERS AND TYLER ZELLER: CAVALIERS ROLL THE DICE SELECTING 6TH MAN EARLY IN LOTTERY
421945

Anyone surprised that the Cavaliers selected a player fourth in the NBA draft who never started a game for his college team should have consulted with the draft pick, himself, for a clearer image in the crystal ball.
"I don't think I have any weaknesses in my game," Dion Waiters boasted Thursday evening.

Waiters, a 6-foot-4 guard from Syracuse, also once gloated that he was best guard in the most recent NCAA Tournament -- while he was coming off the bench for the Orange.

And after Cleveland selected him to round out a backcourt with reigning Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving, Waiters reiterated that slipping to the fourth overall pick after not working out for a single NBA team was just about right for him.

"(I have) a lot of confidence," Waiters said. "A guy who plays with swagger, people would call it. An all-around player."

Lacking in brashness, he is not.

Then again, he might have reason for the self-assurance, despite compiling statistics in two years at Syracuse that weren't particularly impressive -- 12.6 points on 48-percent shooting in 24.1 minutes per game last season.

"He's more ready for the NBA than any other guard I've ever had," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told CBS New York this week. "Nobody will be able to guard him one-on-one unless their last name is (Oklahoma City's Russell) Westbrook. He'll go by anyone he faces. Dion started out the draft process at 25 or 30 and has risen dramatically. It should come as no surprise, he's got all the tools."

It has just taken Waiters some time to display them. Raised in Philadelphia, he bounced among four high schools before finally landing in Burlington Life Center Academy.

At Syracuse, he clashed with Boeheim during his freshman season, played no defense for a team famous for its zone defense, and generally sulked enough that he was expected to transfer.

Instead, however, he rededicated to Boeheim's system, found a way to make his skills fit within it, and earned Big East Sixth Man of the Year honors.

Kyrie Irving Earns Rookie of The Year Honors
421946

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving drove past defenders with ease all season.

It was no different in voting for rookie of the year.

Irving, who played beyond his years and above everyone's expectations including his own, was chosen the NBA's Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, winning an award he always believed was within reach.

The Votes Are In: Irving's The One

Kyrie Irving's stats made him an easy pick for the award, as he was just one of six rookies in league history to average at least 18 points and five assists. Voting totals, from a national panel of 120 sportswriters and broadcasters:

Kyrie Irving, Cle11721592

Ricky Rubio, Min 4923170

Kenneth Faried, Den13034129

Kawhi Leonard, SAS191547

Iman Shumpert, NY17733

Klay Thompson, GS 51530

Isaiah Thomas, Sac 61028

Brandon Knight, Det 6321

Chandler Parsons, Hou 3514

MarShon Brooks, NJ 114

Kemba Walker, Cha 33

Josh Selby, Mem 11

"It was a goal of mine," he said. "I knew as long as we won some games and beat some great team that it was going to come."

Irving received 117 of 120 possible first-place votes from a nationwide media panel of writers and broadcasters. Irving finished with 592 points, way ahead of Minnesota's Ricky Rubio (170) and Denver's Kenneth Faried (129).

Faried, San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard and New York's Iman Shumpert received the other first-place votes, denying Irving's bid to become the fourth player to win the award unanimously.

The 20-year-old is the second Cleveland player to win the award, joining LeBron James in 2004.

The No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft was clearly the league's top first-year player, leading all rookies -- and the Cavs -- in scoring with 18.5 points per game. He also led all rookies in field-goal percentage (46.
421947
, was second in assists (5.4) and became one of just six rookies in league history to average at least 18 points and five assists.

However, it was the other elements of his game -- a nasty crossover dribble, a fearless desire to get to the basket, and a clutch, cold-blooded instinct in the fourth quarter that separated him from the others.

During a sometimes funny and emotional acceptance speech, Irving credited his father, Drederick, and his late mother, Elizabeth, for raising him. He donated a car given to him by Kia for winning the award to the New Jersey Roadrunners, his former AAU team.

Irving, who played only 11 games at Duke because of a toe injury before turning pro, regularly took over games down the stretch for the Cavaliers. He kept them competitive and in the playoff race until mid-March, when the team's front office decided to build for the future by trading his backup, guard Ramon Sessions, to the Los Angeles Lakers for a first-round draft pick.

Once Rubio went down with a season-ending knee injury, Irving became the runaway favorite to win rookie of the year honors.

And beyond his impressive statistics, Irving brought hope to the Cavaliers and Cleveland fans, who have spent the past two seasons trying to move past James, who left as a free agent before he could bring them their first league title.

Irving appears to be the major piece the Cavs can build around, and they plan to get him some help next month with three of the top 34 picks in the NBA draft. The Cavs got lucky and won the draft lottery a year ago, paving the way for them to select Irving.

He was clearly the perfect choice.

"I can't wait to add some pieces this summer and see what happens next year with him," said Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who opened his downtown casino Monday night. "He's great and the way he carries himself is really remarkable. He's 20 years old. That wasn't me at 20 -- or 40. He can't have a drink legally or come into our casino but he can do everything else."

SportsNation: NBA Rookie of the Year?

Kyrie Irving is the NBA's 2011-12 Rookie of the Year. Can you name the last 10 recipients of that award?

• Take our quiz!

Despite having a limited training camp because of the labor lockout, Irving started the opener for coach Byron Scott, who has formed a strong bond with his young star. He believes Irving has just scratched the surface of his potential.

"One of the easiest guys I've ever coached," Scott said. "Last year was a learning experience for him and us. I expect so much more from him next season and beyond."

Although it was assumed Irving would start the season opener, Scott didn't inform him until the day of the game so as not to pamper the playmaker. But Irving had earned the job and it didn't take him long to show the Cavs and the rest of the NBA that stardom would be in his future.

In just his third game, he had a chance to hit a game-winning layup at Indiana but rolled his shot off the rim. Still, Scott's decision to give Irving the ball in that situation was a sign the Cavs were ready to put their franchise in the then-19-year-old's hands.

Irving said that moment of failure was the one he'll savor most from his first season.

"It was a stepping stone for me," he said. "It was learning experience and I needed it."

A month later in Boston, with his father sitting in a courtside seat, Irving had perhaps the defining moment of his season. With the Cavs down by two, Irving, ignoring his failure in a previous situation, drove to the basket, split two defenders and flipped in a left-handed layup to beat the Celtics.

The next day he handled his heroics with humility that was on display all season.

"Just a shot," he said.

Irving arrived with none of the superstar trappings. There was no entourage or multimillion-dollar shoe contract, no cameras chronicling his every move. Irving chose to blend in.

At the Rising Stars Game during All-Star Weekend in Orlando, Irving made all eight 3-pointers to win MVP honors. Posing for a photograph afterward, Irving lowered the crystal he was presented and told the photographer, "Make sure you get the Cleveland" on the front of his jersey.

"That wasn't a publicity stunt at all," Irving said when the season ended. "I just wanted to make sure they got the Cleveland uniform in it. We're not as publicized as everybody else."

As long as Irving's around, that will change.

Plagued By Injury Cavaliers Suffer Another Season In The Basement, Sparks of Hope

421948

Whats up NT Cavs fans. With season ending injuries for cavs big man Anderson Varajao, wing defender Daniel Gibson and even Irving off and on, the cavs left a great deal of wins on the table falling to oppenents with solid inside and outside presence. Cavs did however see a glimps of hope with emerging stars Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson as well as improved effort from small forward Alonzo Gee and improved defensive effort from Daniel "Boobie" Gibson . Gee improved this season in PPG, REB, STL, & Assists while Gibson only participated in 35 games due to injury.

Kyrie, the likely rookie of the year finished the season with solid rookie numbers with 18.5 PPG 5.4 APG and 3.8 RB in 51 games played. Tristan ended the season with 8.2 PPG and added 6.5 RPG playing 23.7 MPG in 60 games behind starting PF Antawan Jamison. Thomas and Irving will both participate in Summer league as Thompson aims to improve his physical strength and midrange game. Check the stories below as well as this thread off and on for more news on the cavs.

UPDATE: Wednesday's loss by Cleveland ensures that the Cavaliers will go into the draft lottery with no worse than the No. 6 pick.

Rich Exner of The Plain Dealer points out today that a loss tonight in the season finale against Chicago would keep the possibility open for Cleveland moving up to No. 3, ahead of Sacramento and New Orleans. If the Cavs beat the Bulls, they will finish tied for the fifth-worst record and a drawing will be held to determine if they go into the lottery at No. 5 or No. 6.

---

Believe it or not, Cleveland has quite a bit riding on its final two games of the season ... at least as far as its spot in the NBA draft lottery goes.

Rich Exner of The Plain Dealer examined the lottery standings in detail today, and points out just how much the next couple days could matter to the future of the Cavaliers.

"The Cleveland Cavaliers enter their final home game Wednesday night within a loss of moving into a third-place tie in the NBA Draft lottery standings," writes Exner. "However, wins Wednesday night and in the season finale at Chicago on Thursday could drop the Cavs as low as a tie for the seventh-worst record -- or, in other words, the seventh or eighth spot in the draft lottery standings."

Potentially, wins in their last two games could drop the Cavs' chances of getting the No. 1 pick from right around 10-15% to around 3-4%, depending on which spot they end up with.

Jamison moving on

i
The Cleveland Cavaliers played their last home game of the season on Wednesday and afterwards power forward Antawn Jamison said he will not return.

"I thank the organization. I enjoyed playing with Mr. (Dan) Gilbert, the training staff and the coaching staff. It was fun. I've enjoyed it. I think we both have (made up our mind)," Jamison told The News-Herald. "It's time for me to move on. I don't know what the future holds. I have a good feeling this is my last home game and tomorrow my last game with the Cavs in general. I think it's on the wall. I wish these guys great luck."

Jamison has talked about potentially signing with his hometown team -- Charlotte Bobcats -- but playing for a contender next season is also appealing.

"I've had a lot of individual accolades. That's the only thing that drives me now. My mindframe, hopefully, chase it for the next two years. The only thing left for me to do is have my last name associated with a champion," said Jamison.

PLAYERS BACK SCOTT

421951

Sports Illustrated recently published a survey of 134 anonymous players and Byron Scott was ranked as the No. 3 least favorite head coach in the NBA. Orlando's Stan Van Gundy is No. 1 and Milwaukee's Scott Skiles is No. 2.

Upon reading the report, some of the Cleveland Cavaliers defended Scott.

"They must have heard stories," Anthony Parker told The Plain Dealer. "Otherwise, that doesn't make sense."

"He's one of the best coaches in this league," Kyrie Irving said, "Just based on the fact he listens to you, but also he gives you an opinion that's in your best interest all the time. He was a player, so he understands how we're feeling."

Scott read the story and just laughed about it.

"I knew it would be hard to beat Scott and Stan. ... I wouldn't lose sleep over it," said Scott.

With the #1 Pick the Cleveland Cavalers Select Duke Guard Kyrie Irving. Irving, the 5th guard in NBA history ever to be selected #1 overall (Magic Johnson, Allen Iverson, Derrick Rose, John Wall - to name a few) becomes an important piece in the cavs foundation to rebuild a franchise that saw its share of hardship during the 2011 season. With the #4 Pick the Cavaliers also select Texas Forward Tristan Thompson. Thompson shot 54.6% from the field at 13 ppg as a Freshman and also averaged nearly 8 rebounds.

In Before The Lock... The Cleveland Cavaliers acquire Omri Casspi and a 2012 1st Round draft pick from the Sacramento Kings in return for Forward J.J Hickson on the eve of the 2011 NBA Lockout. The Cavs continue their reconstuction by dealing the forward for Casspi a 6'9 intense player with trendous energy and solid defensive presence. Hickson admitted to the Plain Dealer that he was "surprised but not shocked" by the trade considering a player of his position (Thomas) was drafted high in this month's draft.

does derrick williams fall to us at 4? the jazz and wolves aren't exactly in need of PF's.

is Kyrie the clear cut #1?
Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we'll call this initial deal "Trade #1"), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a "Trade Exception". Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc.) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc. are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.
