I knew i saw him use it earlier. I forgot about that, and by the looks of it so did everyone else.
That's one way to look at things. Another is because Anko and Sasuke didn't learn everything from Orochimaru, because ****une didn't learn everything from Tsunade, because Obito, Rin, and Kakashi didn't learn everything from Minato, that there was no reason to think Minato would know Sage Mode just because he was Jiraiya's student. Especially seeing as besides summoning Toads, Minato's never shown any of the techniques Jiraiya knew. Again, that's just another way to look at things.
