The Official Anime & Manga Thread Vol: 三

I'll be teaching east Asian history this summer (japan, the koreas, and china)

and a part i'll be teaching on Japan is the psychological effects of the atomic bomb that affected Japan's culture esp. in anime and movies

eg. akira, dbz, godzilla, naruto (kinda), grave of the fireflies, etc.

im not a huge anime watcher. only read naruto but I watched a couple anime movies like akira, grave of the fireflies, only yesterday, 5 cm per second, spirited away, etc (basically all the famous ones)

anyways, I was wondering if any of yall can give me some more reference/examples of traces of the atomic bomb showing in animes?
If you want stuff that's explicit about the bomb, there's always Barefoot Gen. There's also a really moving, quietly devastating manga called Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms that touches on the discrimination of bomb survivors.

Ghost in the Shell takes place some time after Non-nuclear WW3. Don't know how helpful that'll be.

So I googled some anime to try to help.  There actually an anime that depicts during world war 2 era/Hiroshima bombing .  I looked it up and it's called "Barefoot Gen".  I skimmed through it seems good, but holy hell it's dark.

EDIT: NVM BEATEN

That still doesn't deny the fact that this series needs to be nerfed
Exactly. Regardless of when we learned its still mad OD.

I wouldnt exactly say slnaruto was putting work on madara. He would finally figure some stuff out that hit him. But work him no.
GUY is the only one who did real damage

and Kaguya was only introduced like 8 chapters ago. There's more than 8 weeks in a year
Yeah big homie I got the day off today so I'm gonna need a little bit of what you're smoking on.

This was not 6 weeks ago dude. More like last year

Oooooooo I forgot about this. The first time we saw her was 8 weeks ago.

The first time we learned of her was more like 8 months ago.
I think either Madara or Obito mentioned her a couple months after that chapter too though. When I saw her in the Sage's monologue I felt pretty familiar with her and her appearance and was expecting her to make some sort of appearance, if only as the person who inspired Madara's plan.

I watched that one fight everyone loves in Hunter x Hunter. The anime wasn't doing it for me...

The best fights are good because of the anticipation and build up. Series in top five for me. I suggest watching from the beginning and giving it a few a episodes; just like any long series it takes time to get fully enveloped.

My 5 Anime Recommendations (4/5 I'm Sure have been discussed ad nauseam)

Code Geass (Action, Drama) 2006; 2 seasons

Code Geass is an astounding well written well paced Mecha anime. It has a huge amount of characters boasting lots of character development for each one. Code Geass leaves you on the edge of your seat at a each episode with a plot twist at the end of each episode. Follow Lelouch in his Journey to avenge his mother's death and create a world where his little sister Nunnally can live happily.

Sword Art Online (Action, Adventure) 2012; 2 seasons

SAO is nothing short of a great anime, from the art-style to story-line it seems to have it all. However this anime is quite short, which may be great for some individuals as it contains almost no fillers and each episode keeps you on edge while clicking the next video. I strongly watching this AMAZING anime, it's the best anime series I have watched in a while.

Attack on Titan (Action, Dark) 2013-ongoing

I can say with absolute certainty that Attack on Titan is one of the best Anime I have seen. If you're okay with long story arcs, lots of action, many depressing moments, and many very surprising moments, this will be an absolutely wonderful Anime for you. The show really holds you in and makes you crave for more - Even after you finish it. The fighting in this show is spectacular, and very well done.
The art is pretty high quality, and is pretty unique.

Death Note (Drama, Dark) 2006-2007; 2 seasons

This anime is intelligent, supernatural, thrilling, humorous, and contains qualities of a great anime. This anime shows one of the greatest intellectual battles in anime history. It's an idle mind vs a mind of justice. Both of these forces are the few geniuses in their age, and lead to a battle that would forever change history.

No Game No Life (Strategy, Comedy) 2014-ongoing

If you have not watched this anime yet then do yourself a favor and do. This anime has no flaws, and I don't say that lightly. The art is spectacular, it is the most visually appealing anime I have ever seen. The music is great and fits the show very well. The story is original, interesting, and overall just great, and the characters are fantastic. What else do I need to say just go watch it already!

I loved Space Brothers in the beginning but i began to check out around the 30s, its reaaaaly slow paced. Its probably because it's pretty much runnin concurrently with the manga right now. Maybe i'll pick it back up soon

Just had a friend ask me if I knew of any manga that's still currently going that "heavily features Tokyo". Off the top of my head, I remembered that GTO was set in Kichijoji (western Tokyo), Steins; Gate was set in Akihabara, Chaos; Head was set in Shibuya, Saint Onii-san is set in Tachikawa (way far west Tokyo), Arakawa Under the Bridge is in Arakawa Ward, but if anyone knows of any more, it'd be appreciated.

I think even if a series is set in Tokyo, I think what they mean by "heavily features" is that a lot of places and things that exist in reality are shown. Friend has read a lot on geography and urban studies so I think they wanted to look at the representations of Tokyo in literature, which includes manga.

Regarding WorldGoneMad's post, perhaps you could also look at the differences between the anime and manga version of Barefoot Gen? The manga was much more critical of the Japanese war machine and their treatment of minorities at the time. In contrast, the anime emphasized the "Japan as victim" narrative. Through the differences, you can look at how Japan's feelings about World War II kind of shifted as well. The manga came out in the 1970s and the movie came out in the 1980s. There was also a live-action drama in 2007 and 3 live-action movies from 1976 until 1980.

I'm not sure how much time you would have to go over all of that if you're going to do 3 countries, but I remember discussing Barefoot Gen, Ode to Kirihito (referenced diseases like Minamata disease during the 1960's), Death Note, and Nana in an Asian Studies class 4 years ago.

just finished all 12 eps of BEN-TO

i need more NOW

reminded me of School Rumble but with actual fighting.

You think he lost to them, or was he even there to begin with?

I'm torn right down the middle on it honestly. If he lost resulting in Steph and the others forgetting, why would she be the only one exempt from the memory loss? And if he never existed, why would the jig finally be up here instead of after they finished their world domination?

One way or another, I'm beyond excited for the next episode now
