Custom fees depend on the carrier, some send you a letter after delivery, some won't deliver until after you've paid the fees. We're really lucky that these shops/senders label things as gifts since they're basically playing Russian roulette with customs enforcement.

And that $30 that's just postage. I did a friend a favor and sourced the Black/3M snakes and shipped them to the UK, with Priority Mail International it ended up being 68 and change, had I sent it Global Express Guaranteed it'd have cost me double that.

In addition to different carriers approaching collection of fees differently, there are different import and customs policies with different countries. Imports from some counties are much more likely to be inspected than others. Basically, I've yet to meet anybody who isn't an importer/exporter who fully understands how it all works. But, essentially, it's all a game of Russian roulette. Make enough large orders from international outlets, you're going to get banged at some point. In my experience, European imports are more likely to trigger customs than Asian imports, at least talking shoes. But, that's essentially anecdotal.

I've made an obscene amount of purchases from outside the US throughout my years in this hobby, and overall, I've very rarely incurred customs fees. KNOCK ON WOOD. If you're able to get deals consistently, it's worth it if you have to eat a few bucks every once in a while.
