OFFICIAL HOCKEY THREAD: NHL, KHL, NCAA, IIHL

That was maybe my favorite ASG of all time. John Scott stuff was tugging at the heartstrings. Loved how he ripped Roenick as well

But man, Burns seems like an awesome dude. Mad respect for him after the weekend.

Hope they keep 3v3 going forward.

I dont see anyone in the east beating them in 7 honestly.

The Rangers are 2nd and they look awful.

Isles and Devils are still too young to make a playoff run IMO

Penguins are starting to click so that could be the only threat, i think the addition of Hagelin is very underrated.

Pretty much agree

Washington is going to have an awfully good look at it. At least to get to the Finals

i think unless youre a Kings fan, everyone became a fan of Burns after this weekend lol

and i think the whole weekend was perfect especially how the John Scott stuff unraveled

Not worried about the possession #'s...Holtby has been dominant (defense has been very good, too) and they can score.

They're steamrolling through the East right now. No reason to think this won't continue OR this team won't make a legit run at the cup. At some point, all that bad luck has to end. Just gotta keep their health.

I'm worried, I really want Ovi to get a ring, but is this season primed for another disappointing playoff run?

The Caps are 16th in possession, at 49.6%

We have team possession stats going back to 07.

The only teams to win a cup with a sub 50% possession, was the 09 penguins. They were 16th in the league and 49%, but every other squad?

Chicago 2nd

Kings 1st

Black hawks 2nd

Kings 2nd

Bruins 13th (51%) + Tim Thomas entered the matrix.

Chicago 1st

Pittsburg 16th

Detroit 1st

Numbers seem to indicate the caps are going to need an incrdible playoff run by Holtby, and dominate special teams to get the ring.

Thoughts?

Sorry i only factored in the Metro divsion...

even so, i dont think the Atlantic will give them enough trouble to say they wont make a cup run.

even though im a rangers fan i always like to watch a young team make a plaoff run and its obvious its gonna be Florida this year.

Last year was Calgary and i thought their games and the Sea of red was so dope to watch.

But in all id say the biggest threats to the Caps this year are Pittsburgh, TB, and Montreal (assuming Price comes back in time)

I mean there is a reason to think it won't continue. They got the highest PDO in the league.

SV% and shooting % are highly volatile, and very luck based.

I'd be worried, the east isn't strong, but they are below Tampa, Montreal, and Pittsburg interms of possession.

Worried

At this point, no.

Coaches poll was just conducted and Caps were unanimously selected to be in the Finals. Advanced stats be damned.

Can argue Corsi/Fenwick all day, but from watching the games being played from day 1 this season, Caps have been dominant. I see no reason for that to not continue unless health becomes a factor.

I hope this is the year for the Caps, because they do disappoint in the post season |I

New logo looks like someone bending down and the **** that came out is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Good choice imo.

Last night was a good example as to why you can't put too much stock in to possession #'s all the time.

Caps outshot the Panthers 38-18, and lost 5-2. I mean, the Caps...even missing Ovechkin, Johansson, Holtby, and Orpik were controlling the pace of the game from the opening faceoff.

I'm not an expert on CORSI or quantifying how possession/shots relates to wins, and I didn't watch the game, but that sounds like a major outlier.

I guess that's where "quality shot" stats would come into play

it's a one game sample and teams out perform their possession stats for a whole season sometimes.

*cough* toronto maple leafs *cough*

but it eventually catches up.

Maple tried to argue this while they were winning during the lockout shorted season. "oh were getting out shot but we have more quality shots"

caught up to them.

I mean just look at the facts, im not making this up; teams that win the cup were ELITE possession teams with 1 outlier.

Ovi might honestly be my favorite athelte of all time. I want him to win more than anyone, but I have to point out the warts. They are an average possesion team, and average possesion teams generally don't win the cup.

The McJesus hype is going into overdrive after that crazy goal on his return :wow: . Just heard them say that he has "the feet of Bure, the hands of Lemieux and the mind of Gretzky" on TSN

*edit*

Hold on...HOLD ON. Simmonds was ejected for this??????

Again...Bettman, fix your ******* league.

Should have been nothing more than matching penalties. 2:00 x-checking for McDonough and 2:00 roughing for Simmonds.

Unreal what this league is turning in to. :smh:

*edit 2.0*

I see McDonough was penalized...but Simmonds should have never gotten a game misconduct for that.
