I know this should be in the general forum but I don't think that many of us visit that forum so I think its more useful on this section....

I might be late but found out that eastbay is now charging tax as of July 1 for Cali residents....The other states are NY, Wisconsin, Colorado and Illinois...

What a bunch of BS way for them to collect tax when they don't physically have a location in Cali....Just want to know if they'll rescind the tax once Cali is not in a deficit...Now we gotta pay for their screwed up money management....

all they have to have is an affiliate in the state. so FTL, champs, or FA. this tax business is here to stay. thanks to our govt officials who overspend beyond our means.

That was a good perk. no tax and free shipping! maybe they can now double box every order.

Our government is really broke. SMH America is becoming a poor country pretty soon . Fire Obama

This isn't related to sales tax, but I've got my own beef currently with Eastbay and was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else.

I placed an order last week for a North Face hoody (I know it's summer but the price was cheap). I received my item on Tuesday and instead of my charcoal grey hoody in size XXL made by north Face that I ordered I get a blue asics nylon jacket in size Large.

I understand mistakes can be made, I make them daily, so no big deal. I call Eastbay, they acknowledge the error, thankfully they still had the item I originally ordered in the size I wanted and they agreed to go ahead and ship it out to me. So far I'm not happy about what has happened, but I'm not upset either like I said I understand mistakes happen and they are attempting to right the wrong.

So I ask the girl what I'm supposed to do with the blue jacket, she says I have to send it back. I said ok; do I just re-package and leave it at the door or what? She responds with no. I have to take the package and drop it off at the post office. I know for many that may not be a problem, but for me it is. With my work schedule and the fact I don't live close to a post office, it is a real pain for me to get to a post office. I explain this to the Eastbay rep and she says that's the only option. I proceed to ask, what happens if I don't return the jacket and she says I'll be charged for the item. I ask what Eastbay is going to do for me for my inconvenience because of THEIR error. She says what are you looking for out of this? I respond I'm not looking for anything, but I don't find it fair that I'm inconvenienced because of a mistake I did not make, and she responded there was nothing she could do; either mail the jacket back in 90 days or I'll be charged for it.

To me this is horrible customer service. I don't know what Eastbay could do that would make this right in my mind, but I can't believe they have no policy in place when something like this happens. It's not my fault they shipped the wrong thing; but b/c they did now I'm the one who has to correct their error and there's nothing in it for me.

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

Not Eastbay's fault. California passed this legislation. If it were up to eastbay, I'm sure they'd rather not charge tax.

In most states there is a use tax that is equal to your state's sales tax that you are supposed to pay if not sales tax is applied to your order in situations like eastbay where they don't charge because they don't have locations in other states.

The laws have been there forever. The difference is that now a) they desperately need money and b) internet sales are constantly becoming a larger source of revenue for the government.

Smh for all of you complaining about paying a couple bucks extra for taxes you legally should have paid anyways.

I apologize to those that I've struck a chord with, wasn't aware some of you were getting taxed before.

To those that are more up to speed with these types of laws in detail, maybe you should realize that those of us here aren't aware of it and a simple update would be fine instead of SYH.

This isn't an Eastbay problem. Once it's in legislation they have to follow suit. Its like your job receiving a Court order to garnish your pay. If they don't they will be held responsible.

As for the Eastbay Customer Service.. I would hav def. ask to speak to a Manager which is ok. While I could be wrong every rep is given the leeway to "make things right" with disgruntled customers, but if not they can get the permission from a shift manager.

You are correct that you should be given SOME token be it a Gift Card for $25 dollars or something of that nature. They also could have sent you return postage packaging and requested the item be picked up from your door as many other businesses do.

Def. a Customer Service situation though....I also think it was crass for a CS rep to ask what you were looking to get out of it.

Although many NTer's have already responded adequately, I would like to take the opportunity to explain. We currently have locations in the States of Wisconsin and New York requiring us to tax orders being shipped to these states. Unfortunately, both California and Illinois have recently passed laws requiring online retailers to charge tax on orders being shipped to their states just as Colorado has for some time now. Please note, we are not benefitting from this tax. It is not something we receive as an additional payment with orders. These charges are passed on to the government bodies which have put them in place. These changes will affect more than just your Eastbay purchases as taxes are now required on most online purchases being shiped to those states. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but unfortunately, we do not have the ability to change these laws. Thank you.

This has been a long time coming with pressure from government and physical stores. I think I'm going to make a list for myself just so i know where I will be and won't be taxed online
