F1 Official Thread - Grand Prix of Britain

Down to the car and the type of track.  Tracks very from, say, in Shanghai, there are two HUGE straights with some medium-speed turns.  In this case, engine-power/top-speed will make a huge difference.  At a track like Monaco, where there are lots of short sections and slow-speed turns, downforce will play a bigger role.  Engine power won't matter as much.  If you notice, the cars at Monaco and Singapore will have more wings for downforce, while at Monza (the fastest race on the calendar), they'll use a very skinny rearwing to gain more top-speed.

Take Red Bull... they have weaker engines from Renault this season, but probably have the best downforce package right now, which was why they were able to qualify so well today.  The slippery surface (cuz of the rain) makes downforce critical.  They weren't as fast on the long-straights but were able to make up for it in the medium-speed sectors where downforce gave them more grip on the track.  If tomorrow is a dry-race, we can expect Red Bull to fall back during the race.

There's also the issue of making the tires work for you.  Some cars will use up their tires faster than others.  The less downforce you have, the more wheelspin and sliding-around you'll have, the faster you tires get worn out.

As for Force India, they have a legitimately good car this season.  They don't have the top speed of Mercedes (despite having a Mercedes engine) and they don't have the same levels of downforce as Red Bull, but they have a decent bit of both and just a good overall package, which makes them the 3rd or 4th best team out there.  Given the right circumstances, they can finish in the top 6 consistently.  The driver will make a difference, of course.  Checo has always been pretty good at making tires last (he's not too hard on them), so that's always a plus.

Petulant Seb. :smh:

Petulant indeed, especially with Kobayashi. "Tough luck" :rolleyes Good thing Ricciardo is showing him up.

Underwhelming race after an action-filled start. Nico sure wasn't happy on the podium.

So Lewis was onto something when he mentioned something about the checkered flag... :nerd: Bizarre ending to the race.

Chinese GP race result rewinded after chequered flag is waved prematurely!
Luckless Kobayashi loses out on position to Bianchi
By Pete Gill. Last Updated: 20/04/14 12:06pm

Hamilton passed the chequered flag twice in Shanghai
Three hours after the chequered flag officially and unofficially fell in Shanghai, the Chinese GP has reached a bizarre end as the FIA declared the race finished two laps early.

As a result of the chequered flag being waved at race victor Lewis Hamilton prematurely, prompting a bemused radio message to his Mercedes pitwall from the Englishman, the race has been officially deemed to have been completed on lap 54.

While Hamilton's victory still stands, the rewind means that the pass of Caterham's Kamui Kobayashi on Marussia rival Jules Bianchi for 17th has been wiped from the record books.

"I was thinking, 'Am I seeing things?' I was coming across the line expecting to do another lap and all of a sudden I looked up, saw the flag and I lifted for a second," Hamilton said afterwards.

"Then I saw there was no-one on the wall so I kept going. I did lose a second or so but when I asked the team, they said 'No' and I just kept going. It was very strange."

While the revision is believed to be unprecedented in recent times, Art 43.2 of the Sporting Regulation does cover such an eventuality, stating: 'Should for any reason the end of race signal be given before the leading car completes the scheduled number of laps, or the prescribed time has been completed, the race will be deemed to have finished when the leading car last crossed the Line before the signal was given.'

All other positions are unaffected by the change.

Amended result

2) Nico Rosberg, Mercedes

3) Fernando Alonso, Ferrari

4) Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull

5) Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull

6) Nico Hulkenberg, Force India

8) Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari

9) 11 Sergio Perez, Force India

10) Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso

11) Jenson Button, McLaren

12) Jean-Eric Vergne, Toro Rosso

13) Kevin Magnussen, McLaren

that he's benefitted from team-orders before too...

What's interesting is that had he conceded earlier, would Daniel have been able to close up on Alonso... and possibly pass him for 3rd?  Did Seb indirectly cause his team a podium?

No denying his skills, but it's this attitude that has turned many against him (from his crash with Webber in Turkey to Multi-21).  Ultimately, it's a team-sport.  He races for the team.  Like any job, your boss asks you to do something, you do it.  At least Daniel was able to beat him by 24 secs.

And that checkered-flag... crazy! LOL

^ I watched it till end.. what happened on the checkered flag? I heard lewis on the radio saying he saw the checkered flag entering his final lap. commentator saying 1 more lap lewis 1 more lap.

similar to scumbag Lauda... but more Bieber-like.

It was truly bizarre.

When Lewis started his last lap, we heard him on the radio say something about the checkered flag.  Commentators thought he said something like "why wasn't there a checkered flag?"  They thought Lewis/Merc has miscounted the laps, when in fact, Lewis said something like "why was there a checkered flag?"  But at the same time, Lewis didn't see his mechanics celebrating at the pit-wall fence so he asked his team what was going on... to which they told him to do 1 more lap.

It was a huge screw-up (probably by Race-Control) cuz the rules state that should the checkered-flag (mistake or not) be waved before the official last-lap, then the standings from the previous lap will be used.  Now imagine if Daniel had overtaken Alonso on the final lap for P3... but only to have it taken away (again)!  The injustice!

^ Maybe the flag guy was bored and wanted the race to end early... I know I was.

But seriously, though. They kept waving blue flags to cars racing on the lead lap. Marshalls need to get re-trained, I think.

For my fellow car nuts... you might want to check this game out. Project CARS. Basically makes you progress through the ranks towards the driving career of your choice. That means it doesn't just culminate in F1. There aren't current official F1 cars licensed (doubtful there ever will be since Mr. Eccle$tone's deal with Codemasters), but there are a couple of licensed old Lotus cars in the game. The 2014 Audi R18 e-tron is in though, after Le Mans. :pimp:

For SinnerP, there are a few McLaren cars officially licensed in-game. The MP4-12C, the MP4-12C GT3, the McLaren F1 and McLaren F1 GT, and the McLaren P1. As well as Bentleys, Mercedes, and Audi's. There's honestly a large assortment of cars for everybody.

Looking like a formiddable contender against the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza.... and it's getting better with each build. Hope it does well. :pimp:

If it helps, those really are in-game footage.

Yes, I saw that they other day!  Looks incredible!  Almost too good!  But some of the car physics looks like it could use a bit of work.  The roll and whatnot still doesn't look realisitic enough.  Still early though, of course.

Yeah. Admittedly the physics are still work in progress. You've got guys like ex-Stig Ben Collins, Lewis Hamilton's younger brother Nicolas Hamilton (that guy is fast!), Oliver Webb (young up-and-coming racer), and Rene Rast (Audi professional driver - just a normal community member though) putting in work constantly. Ben was busy with the 6 hours of Silverstone recently, so he didn't have much feedback the past week. You have no idea how many different tyres they've gone through to date! :wow: Hard to keep up, really! The pace is starting to get frantic in the forums... only 7 months to go. Glad to see it making a buzz so far. Running the game on a budget like this without a publisher is tough. Hopefully the "sim racing purists" give it a shot before putting down their judgment.

They could potentially get an F1 car, there is one in Forza. It looks very good, but we'll see how it plays and a big thing for me is the online setup. Its what makes Forza better than GT imo.

^ Always tricky with F1 cars cuz Bernie is pretty strict with the rights and whatnot.  They allow certain cars, but the only game with the entire grid is the official F1 game.  Surprised GT5 had the 2 Ferraris (gone in GT6), while Forza had the Lotus.

Anyway...

^ Would just like to point out that that track is far from finished; it will still undergo quite a lot of polishing (better trees, more kerb textures, etc.). The other tracks are progressing fairly quicker than this one at the moment. Looking forward to Guia Circuit being introduced.

Current and former F1 circuits that seem to be licensed for now are Imola, Monza, Hockenheim, Zolder, and Silverstone. Other officially licensed tracks are Cadwell Park, Snetterton, Oulton Park. Current and Former F1 tracks that are planning to be included (not officially licensed yet) are Spa-Francorchamps, Monaco, Mugello, Circuit de Catalunya, Donington, Brands Hatch, Laguna Seca, Indianapolis Motor Speedway,Nurburgring GP/Nordschleife (24H layout hopefully), and Suzuka. Lots of other noteworthy tracks, too in the works (from what I recall) -Circuit de la Sarthe (and Bugatti Circuit), Brno, Oschersleben, Mount Panorama Circuit, Daytona Speedway, Road America, Infineon/Sonoma Raceway, that track that looks like a dong which they drove on with the yellow LFA in Top Gear a couple of seasons ago... forgot what it's called. Willow Springs I think? Memphis Oval, Solitude Rennstrecke, Watkins Glen and a few fictional point-to-point tracks and real and fictional kart tracks. Includes a few layouts (including historic for each track as well. Also has a fictional Test Circuit where you can carry out various tests (skid pad, hillclimb, drag strip, circular oval track, etc).

Well, having real F1 cars would be nice to have in the game... would cost a pretty penny, I'm sure (not quite sure if the budget would allow for that to happen). With that said, I'd rather have more cars that make sense for the game than just have that. Surprisingly much more to the world of motorsport than just Formula One. With that said, the worst case is that we will have an F1-like car representation (called the Formula A), which will be representing the 2013-spec F1 car (V8 with DRS and KERS). Formula B for GP2; Formula C for GP3; Formula Rookie for Formula Ford. The Formula Gulf FG1000 is licensed, though, as is the Dubai Autodrome (trying to make the in-game track the most realistic representation of that circuit - working in close cooperation with them). Aside from these "current-gen" open-wheel cars, you have quite a few historic racers, notably the Lotuses (I think Audi and Mercedes have one each, will have to confirm that). Oh, and go-karts and superkarts are in as well. Not sure if the go-kart is the fixed gear one or a shifter kart, though (kart in game looks like it has a shifter knob but you don't need to upshift  ).

Not sure what happened with the BMW F1.08, though. Not sure if that would be in the game any more. Was one of the cars I was looking forward to the most for the game, with the ridiculous aero and that V10. :\

The media undoubted spends more time on Senna, but true racing fans will not have forgotten Roland...

More Corinthians...

And McLaren's vid...

Roland would have been otherwise lost to history had Senna not also perished that weekend. History will always have them intertwined. There were a couple good articles on racer.com this week about him. I really don't think those get run if his death wasn't so tied to Senna's. Regardless, may they both rest in peace.

^ It was just one of those eerie weekends.  Rubens had a huge crash on Friday practice, but was ok... though he didn't race on Sunday.

Then on Saturday, Roland had that fatal crash.  It's kinda graphic so I'll let you YT it.

On Sunday, it was Ayrton.

The story went on that Prof Sid Watkins, the FIA doc at the time and good friend to Senna, asked him to quit on Saturday and just go fishing with him... if only...
