Nike versus the NBA lockout 2011/12 - care to chime in?

I was just thinking about the lockout and how it might affect the release of basketball footwear.  Say there's no 2011/12 NBA season, how does marketing go from there? It'd be like a wasted year- would Lebron wear the 9's the season after? Would Kobe skip the vii's and go on to the viii's? How does Dwade wearing the AJ2012 a year behind the actual drop date sound?

I'm sure Nike will have their marketing geniuses work up a catchy commercial despite the lockout, but how much does not having a season take away?

I think in the end, no season hurts all parties (to state the obvious).  At least Nike can't release a playoff shoe for Lebron, a POP colourway for Kobe and the likes of Fly Wade 2 for Dwade's playoff run.

Perhaps, signing overseas could somewhat help get on-court exposure and marketing efforts can be salvaged.  Players who do sign with teams overseas are smart, because they can see the negative impact of potentially losing a year- in terms of income and their basketball life.

Nike doesn't need the NBA to sell shoes... They may take a hit.... But doesn't mean they still can't advertise their elite players in other ways.
Notice how commercials and other marketing shames just focus on the player?...........
Oh, and basketball is all year long for the rest of the world.

And sigs will continue... The Air Jordan 10 still released...

Nike will just have a look at their projections for the season, and any loss they make from an NBA Lockout will be offset against next year.

Agree with everything NWT said, especially the last line.
I can see Nike reps for schools really pushing the star players to wear a sig shoe during the NCAA season and eventually tournament if we miss a whole season.

That'll be enough for those who actually play/watch ball to see, then the people that are really into player sigs (such as ones that sign on to NT) are always going to know whats up when it comes to the sigs.

Then you have the casual buyer, who will come into a retailer and ask for the new "(insert player)" shoe, look at it, and either like it or not.

they could just have Kevin Durant push their products to the masses in a season-long series of domestic fringe league games in major US markets like he's been doing this summer in LA, NYC, and DC. Could call it "The Kevin Durant REALLY DOES love and give a sh*t about playing basketball -- here's proof" tour.

Can't imagine a better candidate to represent the heart and soul (and sole) of Nike basketball in the event of a lockout destroying next season. Unlike an aging Kobe with bad knees and an aloof LeBron, KD LIVES hoops 24-7.

Sad that there may be no '11-'12 season after how amazing the '10-'11 season was.

Nike Basketball shoes are not only worn in the NBA. Yes most of the endorsers come from the NBA but it is a global game. Where ever the game is played there is a market for it.

Nike can always give some college teams exclusive colorways just to push their Hyperdunks and Hyperfuse.
Brons and Kobes will always sell no matter what.

Elite athletes will possibly go over seas..."Over Sea" PEs

It will and does hurt potential sales but probably not enough for them to worry.

There is going to be a reason and you'll get to see all the superstars rock the kicks so you can run to the store to buy them

A more sophisticated International sneaker market. All sorts of colorways could appear. Or maybe it will stick true to familiar colorways but just call it something different. I.e. Deron Williams would have something like a Beşiktaş Hyperfuse 2011 PE. And they'd probably label the colorway as black / istanbul red / white. #imfromthefuture

^ This man speaks the Truth.

There are many companies that will be directly affected much more than Nike, much bigger deal for them
