As an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has lined up and locked down plenty of guys around the league.

[h3]And I don't really care for [Phillip Rivers], first of all. He's not a respectable guy right now because you talk too much trash and do this and that, but you're really not a great player in this league right now.

-- Denver's Champ Bailey

But Bailey says there was no defense for Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers' sideline taunting of Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler in the fourth quarter of Monday night's 23-3 Broncos loss in San Diego.

The video has made the rounds of the highlight shows near and far, but after an incomplete pass on fourth down in the fourth quarter, Rivers -- as well as linebackers Shaun Phillips and Matt Wilhelm -- clearly can be seen jawing at Cutler from the San Diego sideline.

But it was the Chargers quarterback who drew the Broncos' ire.

"And I don't really care for the guy, first of all," Bailey said of Rivers on Wednesday. "He's not a respectable guy right now because you talk too much trash and do this and that, but you're really not a great player in this league right now.

"You're surrounded by great players, but you're not a great player. I think he needs to understand where he stands in this league -- where he stands on his team first and foremost."

The incident was a topic of discussion among Broncos players as they gathered after the holiday to begin their workweek leading to Sunday's season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

Teammates said Cutler certainly was not happy with what was perceived as a breach of etiquette, but publicly he was measured in his response.

"We've talked about it a little bit," Cutler said. "I'm not going to get into it. It's an unfortunate situation. They talk a lot of stuff, it got heated between the two teams. Personally, I don't think the teams like each other, which is fine. It's just going to add to it later next year and the year after that. It should be exciting."

Asked if he had ever done that to another quarterback, Cutler shook his head and said "No."

Rivers said he used no profanity and was only reacting to his defense's play.

"We get a fourth-down stop, Wilhelm and Shaun Phillips, those guys been jawing the whole game with them," Rivers told The San Diego Union-Tribune. "We get a good stop. They are jawing. I'm not anywhere involved. I come out to congratulate them on the stop. I come out to congratulate them, and while I'm out there, yeah, there is some eye contact, but I'm saying 'atta baby' to Matt Wilhelm and Shaun Phillips. Sure, there is eye contact. Maybe there is a smirk. But I am speaking to my guys. That's all that was said.

"I don't think I have to defend myself. I used no profanity, I said nothing personal to anybody on that field. I was out there playing football. We're not in a tennis match. I understand some of the frustration is they've lost four in a row to this team. People don't like losing four in a row."

Rivers also said he was surprised by Bailey's reaction, saying: "He's one guy I've always said we respect him. He's one of the top corners in the league. Out there in the game, I say very little to Champ other than if we do complete one on him -- and you don't go after the guy -- he'll look at me, I'll grin at him like, 'Hey, we got you.' It's always been a very respectful communication between me and him. That surprises me."

Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler said the incident would come up again when the Broncos face the Chargers next season and veteran cornerback Dre Bly added Rivers had not yet "earned the right to do that."

"They've got a lot of classy guys on that team," Bailey said. "He kind of represents the classless guy on that team. He's definitely lost my respect."

BooHoo cry me a river...it kills me that these are grown men and they can't take a little trash talk...Champ Bailey would hate me at how much trash I talk when I play sports

I see where both sides are coming from, but I HATE Rivers.......and yes I'm a Chargers fan.....Champ is right, who the #++% is Rivers? He's a nobody inthis league, and he is nowhere near earning the right to be able to taunt the way he did.

I like it. A little bad blood infused into a rivalry is always a good thing as long as they settle it on the field.

--eh. Waaaa waaa.
--Football is a game of trash talking. Who cares? All them linebackers every Sunday prolly talk smack all the time.
--I'm not defending Rivers or anything and I agree that he's no one in this league. But there is room for trash talking in football. Its football CMON.
--We fans talk trash every Sunday and we don't do ANYTHING to help these teams make a sack, touchdown, field goal, interception...etc etc...

I could care less that Rivers hasn't "done" anything yet... it's EFFIN football. Win some division rivalry games and shut Rivers up. Simple.

Rivers has feminine tendencies. Same mary who last year whined about Ellis Hobbs and the "classless" Patriots.

I agree Rivers has done nothing in this league but like the person said a few posts up win some games and talk trash right back...And even though Champ isargubly the best CB in the league he knows goood and well when hes lockin down a Top WR hes talkin the most trash out there

omg... I'm so tired of this story. 1st off, Rivers said he was smirking but honestly didn't say anything to any of the Broncos. Either way, who cares?!You're football players. When I played, I remember being choked at the bottom of piles and having guys tell me they'd bang my sister. And that was in8th grade! it comes with the territory.

And Champ is wrong. Rivers HAS done something to earn him the right to talk trash to their team. He's beaten them 4 times in a row. When they shut him downand beat SD, then they can talk.

I said it in the game thread I have no idea why rivers trashy%%%% was talking trash. He sucks and it wasn't like he was killing denever with his play.

rivers is probably the one starter on offense or defense that has the LEAST room to be talking junk.

hell, the special teams specialists in david binn [long snapper], nate kaeding [place kicker], mike scifres [punter], and darren sproles have a whole lot moreroom to be talking junk. seriously.

there are backups on the team that have more room to be talking trash.

yeah, the chargers beat the broncos, but rivers should be the last one talking trash.

oh really?

Just remember, we ALL know who was salty last year after their squad lost to the Pats....sportsmanship goes out the window in blowouts...

Yeah..Rivers sucks this season and shouldn't be talking trash at all...

but I 'm glad he did. We need some to light some fire for the damn playoffs and I'm glad he did. We need that swag

@ the emotions. I swear some of y'all have never played orgnaizedsports before

I know this is slightly off topic, but its funny how much better the Chargers would be if they kept Brees. Hell the Broncos would be better if they keptPlummer. I know I might get flamed for the Plummer comment, but its hard to argue against it.

I have no issue with trash talking, showing emotions, etc. What I do have issues with is with these nancy boy Charger players who were *****ing and moaningand near tears after the "classless" Patriots had the nerve to celebrate after winning an intense and toughly fought playoff game last year. Youcant have it both ways.

Word, I was one of the fans who didn't really care about that. It comes with the territory. Pats beat us on our home field and Ellis Hobbs tore it upin that game.

And it was LT who was crying

one of the main reasons why i don't think rivers should talk trash is for the sake of his own health.

i wouldn't be surprised one bit if he got cheap shotted. i bet an opposing team would gladly take a 15 yard penalty just to shut him up. and if in theprocess of shutting him up billy volek or charlie whitehurst have to go into the game, i'm sure any opposing team would be even happier after that.

Yeah Rivers is a dbag...

That's like an unproven rookie out there talking smack...Everybody in the entire world knows that the Chargers would be nothing without LT.
