I was close to getting a steep tech recently for snowboarding but I can't spend all that money on something i'd only wear a few times a year.  Plus the ones out now don't even have any good colors.  It looks stupid when not zipped up because of the asymmetrical zipper.
Also, there's a misconception in here that well-fitting wool coats are not warm and just for metros.  Wool coats are a staple for winter and worn by a lot of people.  I live in NY also and most of the people I see are wearing wool.  Warmth depends on the heaviness of the coat just like it is for technical jackets.  They also make water-proof wool coats now if people want to wear it in the snow.

As far as the Monclers go, I've had mine for about 3.5 years. It's a reversible Parka with one side looking like a regular down parkawith a slight gloss finish, cargo pockets, etc... and the other side looks like a down-filled version of a camel coat or trench coat. Versatile as all hell, and it's the warmest jacket ever without being too warm indoors. One of the best clothing investments I've ever made. As you get older you realize it's better to have a few high quality pieces than just a whole lotta gear. Limited in my own world"

I live in Toronto and all I can say is thank you North Face, I have the Ice parka in black, on the REALLY cold days i just throw on a Champion superhood underneath and I'm fine. Looking to get a Gotham or a Marmot next winter.
