I just recently moved to the east for school and will be needing a warm jacket for the winter. Stopped by Burlington Coat Factory earlier today and picked up a Columbia Erudite jacket for 80 bucks. Seeing as I'm from the West Coast, I have no idea as to what jacket will be suitable for the winter. I've heard that the average low here during the winter is about 20-25 degrees. Does anybody know if the jacket I picked up will be warm enough?? If not, please feel free to provide suggestions.

P.S. I'm a student, so I'm not trying to go broke buying a jacket (<$100 would be ideal). Also, although it would be a plus if the jacket looks nice, I'm more worried about the functionality of the jacket (i.e. keeping me warm).

Thanks guys.

Cliff notes: Is Columbia Erudite jacket going to keep me warm in 20-25 degree weather?

Probably won't keep you toasty, but with a sweatshirt or something under it I think you can manage. If you can still return it, maybe check backcountry.com in the down jackets and see if theres anything cheaper or on sale, but I'd guess you'll be fine with that.

ordered this yesterday from the j. crew factory sale

my winter coat is this penfield summit down parka from a couple years ago

No. Not even a sweatshirt under is going to help you. I understand that you don't want to spend more than $100, but you need a good coat for the Winter. Being cheap = getting sick.

Where do some of you guys live to where these paper thin jackets/coats keep you warm in the cold weather?

I just googled the Columbia Erudite to see how heavy it was, it's a double layer jacket. It's not the heaviest jacket in the world but if you wear a fleece or hoody under then you might be good. Layering does help keep you warm. The east coast winter last year wasn't too bad.
