Official Niketalk DJ Thread vol. NO REQUESTS

theres still some real djs who post on here. dont be fooled by all the controller talk (no offense)

proto-j posted on this thrad, hes a cool dude, linked up a few times while hes been in miami, alex butler too (johnny blaze something), gusto post on the wdywt, dj award from LA and bunch more that i cant remember.

i know ppl that have done that with traktor, use the S2 as a main mixer, and still use turntables. not too familiar with all that. theres that one pioneer controller thats like $1000 that i heard is good, the one i posted isnt bad, and theres one thats like 800 thats descent too, i seen ppl use that one with serato. i do a few mobile gigs here and there (store events, launches, fashion shows) and sometimes i feel no need to bring everything that I do, and thought about the controller, i ended up just getting a all in one casket and a legit dolly, it makes eveyrhting 100000 times easier, only pain is loading it in my car, i use to have individual cases for everything and suuuucked. u have a SL2 with a mixer right now? i would say stick to that, i dont know if you can connect turntables to an itch controller.

also here's a link to a bunch of edit packs ive made:

hope they come in handy

Thanks dude, yea mixer with SL2 now, Im more than likely going to just get a rane sixty-one or sixty-two mixer just so I don't have to connect the SL2 and have those extra wires (although it really isnt that big a deal) I do the same kinda gigs and events and some parties, I like the look/feel of at least one turntable so I'm certainly not losing them. Yea I have individual cases for each table now, and no case for the mixer. Good looking on the info.

Are you insinuating that real DJs use TTs?
yeah real djs use turntables.

i mean there are big name djs like porter robinson and zedd that use controllers like the S2 or S4, but those are producers turned djs. its just a industry standard to use turntables or cdjs. and it all goes back to what i said earlier, it all depends on where you wanna take it. if youre gonna be a bedroom dj, do a few parties and keep it chill work with what you got, but if youre trying to pursue a career djing and want to get booked at legit spots, youre going to need to know how to play on one (or both). i personally dont care what you play on, as long as you keep the party going. i guess my wording was wrong, there are real djs who do use controllers, i meant more like OG djs....

@Dwalk31: yeah i have a 57, so i dont have to plug in the box everytime, i do have a SL1 box that i have in my dj bag, that i take with me everywhere, since some spots i play it dont provide it.

I wish i knew how to DJ, I always wanted to get into it but i never knew any DJ's but middle age men who play the electric slide

Real DJs DJ, that's what they do. It isn't about the medium it's about the skill on the decks. I've seen cats on decks that were horrible. I rock a controller and tables, doesn't matter to me because I can get the job done on both. When I was using tables years ago people were laughing telling me that CDJs were the way to go and now everyone is back on the tables bandwagon and it's just crazy.

I used to be a bedroom DJ and had a setup for the longest time. Had two Technics MK2s, Vestax 05 pro, Shure needles, 8 crates of records, Technic headphones and sold it all for a measly $850 when I needed a new computer abck 6 years ago. Never really go into DJing ever since but now wanted something around the pad to mess around again. this might show my age and my knowledge but I just saw what these controllers are and figure that is the cheapest and easiest way to get my DJ fix without spending thousands of dollars like before. I am all down for the whole "real vinyl" thing and am down for real DJs but for me personally, I am down to get down with technology and get one of these toys for ol' time sake.

I haven't read this whole thread yet but I did see someone mentioned the Denon MC3000 but I just wanted to know if someone can share their opinons on the Vestax Vestax VCI-300MKII and if it is worth the money. Main things I am looking for is a controller to use to sratch and mix with. Not super into all the rest but I guess most contollers have all the effects and what not. Any input would be great.

Oh....and also if I get a controller with a sound card, what else do I need? Can I literally just plug it in a computer and then it's ready to play or do I have to buy speakers for it and not use my computer's speakers.

I do think real DJ's use turntables. DJ does stand for Disk Jockey (disk=vinyl). I dislike the sync button because it has ruined the art form of being able to do this

you are incorrect. tell that to Richie Hawtin. he uses Traktor, and uses 4 decks on it. it's to sample, loop, etc. he, along with many other minimal techno DJ's use their latpop and other gear. technology is innovating the dj scene. *note im not oppose to the CDJs and whatnot. people use whatever is intuitive for them.

this vid explains why hawtin uses traktor and what he does with 4 decks.

Oh yea I'm no DJ AM either. I do think a lot of famous DJs get down and have great sets. I love laidback Luke as a live DJ however the art of actually djing scratching, beatmatching, hands on looping is lost in this process.

Yeah, you can use computer speakers if it has an AUX port.

like i said before I THINK, that it doesnt matter, as long as yo rock the party. whatever u need, be a turntable set up, controller, shhhh even an ipod mixer.

the sync button didnt ruin anything, i also mention before that it can be use for quantized/synced sample decks, so it open a whole nother window to work with. you can use it to your advantage. yes its misused and ppl think its the only way to do it, but theres always gonna be that.

@Bendover: thats a bad example, LBL is one of the few EDM djs (as well as chuckie) that incorporate turntablism to there sets.

i personally dont care how long u been djing, what u use, how u use it, just know that there is a right way and a wrong way. im not one of those bitter "i use to carry crates, these noobz dont know ****" dj that plays at your local sportsbar and dont want to go out and hustle cuz think something is owed to them. i did carry crates, i did learn to beatmatch by ear, but its not what makes me the dj i am today. obvioulsy those things help me, but im open minded and get with the times, im constantly improving myself and know that there is always someone trying harder than me. so im constantly working on my craft. and always down to help any dj that is as passionate about djing as i am.

I have loads of questions. First being, I just purchased a Numark Ns6, do I need to go vinyl and get a digital controller later in the future?

I've been learning it recently for premade mixes for radio. Not using it in the live aspect

I purchased the denon mc3000 and have been using it for about 3 weeks now and wow i am in love! :pimp: thanks for all the suggestions...this is exactly what i wanted!!

next question...is tractor worth it>VDJ? I just used my 30 minute trial but i'm not sure what i fully think of it yet. any suggestions? :nerd: :nerd:

My brother is 16 and is getting into the whole DJ phase. All he listens to his old school 90s hard trance type music. I try to get him to mix it with some of the current songs today, but he's not having it

I bought him a DJ Imix MKII mixer thing (it comes with deckadance). Is there anyway he can record the tracks he mixes as music files?

Anyone here have any experience with Ableton?
i know the basics, i do all my edits on it, need to learn more.

i started off using ddj-s1 but felt like i was cheating, now i have cdj 800. sooner or later moving to cdj 1000 or 2000

Just copped a used Vestax PDX 3000 mix from guitarecnter.com for $150 (The store was trying to get rid of it.). Everything works and its only missing the headshell. This is one hell of a deal.

Anyone here use harmonic mixing?

I understand the benefits, but at the same time I feel like it takes the natural human intuition away. Like the element of "hmm what song should I play next that'll keep it going, oh I got it!"

I'm worried that'll go away and I'll become reliant on something that's limiting and makes me a robot without that natural human intuition.

Although I'd definitely understand using it for super long sets of techno/tech house and similar genres.

Hey fam, looking to buy a new computer. I was using an apple w/ intel core 2 duo. I'm thinking of buying this new one tho. I want to keep it under 14' since I have to carry it around an would like it to be i5 / i7. My budget is 500 plus tax.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK, SHOULD I BUY IT?
400

I WILL BE RUNNING SERATO BTW
