OFFICIAL Ye fka "kanYe West" x G.O.O.D. Music Thread - ¥$ (AKA YE X TY DOLLA SIGN) - VULTURES (NOW AVAILABLE WOWWWW)

I didn't know that about it being HBO's idea. I am familiar with Abramovis's work though.

But I was moreso saying, if you're doing a minimalist performance piece, maybe the VMAs isn't the place.

Maybe there's a way to do it where you can still use it as a massive marketing/promotion vehicle (stream it) and do it in the right setting.

Where the focus is strictly on him, his "vision", his product. I wouldn't have wanted to be sandwiched between Gaga and Robin/Miley or be involved in any of that ******** last night.

First off, I pretty much agree with you on most points.

But if you're taking a minimalist approach and "trying to fade in the role of being a father, letting the music/art speak for itself without over the top gimmicks", why are you even at the VMAs?

If that's where you are, and we tell you "Lady Gaga is opening, then Miley Cyrus is coming out etc., and Katy Perry is closing" (artists can ask who else is on the bill before they agree to do a show), why even do it? You're on a platform. You're not letting the music just speak for itself. You're there for a reason.

This is the **** that gets me every time. One minute he's raging against the machine. The next, he's a part of it. One minute it's no strategy, I'ma sell more music by making better music, no single.

Then it's OK, Black Skinhead is the single. And I'm doing the VMAs. And I'm on Kris Kardashian's talk show.

He could have done that performance a million different ways to make his statement. The way Jay did his Picasso Baby video for instance. Make it a performance piece from a museum. Stream it online. Own it control it. Don't let MTV use your name to hype their show etc.

And again, my thing is, making 100% clear what the tree is and means makes it's a 10 times better performance for that event. Do the song. End with the caption that Virgil posted. Make that your closer. There you go MTV audience. How you feel?

And I would have walked away with a totally different impression. Or at least AN impression.

I'm not saying he should have done BadBoy era pyro, but when people go from saying "he executed his vision" in one breath to "the performance was boring" in the next.....perhaps he could have done things differently.

Think of that performance in parallel to every other performance outside of Bruno & Timberlake... all were mockups of some bland pretty soulless songs. We know how highly ye thinks of his own music, so i def think this was a platform for him to say **** MTV's vision... i'm gonna do things my way, with my kind of music and your gonna have to play it because even without all the gimmicks and catchy songs people still wanna see him.

What Ye is starting to realize is that if you want to change music this is the EXACT format that you have to try and awaken and get used to other forms of doing music. could he have boycotted the show and released his own video, what would that have done to change people minds? get them thinking? nothing.

By actually going to the award show he gets too touch different demographics and actually give them a choice on whether or not they should like it or not. and i wouldn't be surprised if he wanted the caption added to the video and MTV told him no.

That whole entire show was building on equality and love for all races, preferences etc etc.... Having Kanye West of all people boldly play a song reminding the world how blacks were lynched and treated wouldn't exactly pass that message out clearer.

I really have no idea what this dude is thinking anymorel
Haven't you felt this way before the VMA's?

Some of you are adorable....

Rather than being so concerned with what I think, why don't you tell me what you thought of that "performance". Read the words. I certainly don't agree with a lot of what he does.

But that **** was pointless to me. Dude blacked out standing in front of a still shot from National Geographic.

OK.
I thought it was good, wasn't exceptionally amazing but it was cool

The blacked out figure was cool imagery and it fit his "God" steez he's on

The background was a tree used for lynching, to go with the Strange Fruit theme obviously

It was a safe, good performance . . . wasn't really exceptionally bad or great IMO

 at all this Kanye mindreading. What is all this pseudo psycho-analysis of what you think he wanted and what you think he was trying to accomplish?

It was a "boring", "average" performance in the words of people in here other than myself. That's it. That's all we know. What our eyes heard and saw.

All that extra **** really is coming off as a rationalization or "excuses" for a performance not too many people found compelling.

If Kanye wanted the caption and MTV told him no, he shouldn't have done the show. Isn't that what we would normally think Kanye would do? Or is he now compromising for MTV? Where would the statement be in that?

Kanye doesn't have to do the VMAs to touch different demographics. He's touched them his whole career.

He already has a platform. He's been there, done that at the VMAs. He's been a part of the machine already and now claims he's against it....but jumps back into it.

Kanye has said **** MTV a million times. Jumping on stage and questioning their decisions. Now his **** MTV is a "boring", "average" show at their biggest event?

Not buying it. All it was to me was an underwhelming performance. All the other analysis of it's "vision" or intent or what may or may not have happened with MTV is heresay.

i actually liked the performance... with all the over the top performances that went on last night, this seemed like a good change of pace. glad he went with blood on the leaves as well instead of new slaves or black skinhead

Crazy how much performing on award shows help sales. Yeezy back in top 10 on itunes and Blood on the Leaves is #33.

Ohhh so that's what the woods background was trying to convey. I got it now. Ye' was feelin' it during his performance.

It was iiiight overall.

You know what's funny though?

Elaborate costume, flashing lights, Miley Cyrus.
I mean look at the channel- MTV is incapable of sublty.

In a time where everything produced by the media is over the top, how do you stand out?

You do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Or at least... the least amount possible.
No lights. A picture. A shadow. And a song.

I was waiting for another Runaway
Didn't like it much (I was waiting for the lights to cut on and the **** to start, really), and I doubt that puts me in the minority. But it's exactly what he wanted to do.
He's "doing him" to the point that it's only for him. And it's alienating, because he wants to be left the **** alone.
I mean this is exactly what he did on Yeezus. ****-the-world-self-indulgent minimalism seems to be his current aim, and this performance was spot on.

kanye shrug
I just sit and crack up when people make it seem like kanye is this masterful tactition
I ain't tryna argue my dude it's just funny how people make excuses for dude ALL THE TIME

He is.

I know I'm late as hell but I just now saw some clips from that Kris Jenner interview. Why the hell was he talking like that?

As a middle class black guy I've done some code-switching in my day, believe me. But never anything THAT bad lol

Interesting take I got from an MTV/Viacom employee acquaintance on the Kanye performance:

Ye knew who else was performing and what they'd be doing and in a year where Miley is on drugs and wilding out and Robin Thicke has dancers with stick figures of yachts parading around him, Drake is performing like he's an album cover then running through the crowd and lighting up the stage in standard hip hop fare, Kanye knew that the only way to distance himself was just to perform the song and let the music be the music.  Also the implied art installation with a black silhouette on a tree that was allegedly used to lynch slaves was intentional and intended.  The problem is as the thngs were done it may have been too smart for that room of people and that network.

Which is pretty much what I've been saying.

Nako, I think we were in agreement that if he had just made it clear at the end of his performance what The Lynching Tree was, he could have still let the music be the music AND made it a performance that resonated to some degree.
