Kanye West: ‘Swish’ Is a ‘Sonic Painting’

Fans have been patiently waiting for Kanye West’s Swish, but he’s in no rush to release it. The hip-hop mogul is still working on the album, which he says is getting better by the week.

During a rare break from the studio, he checked in with Big Boy on Real 92.3 (via HHNM) to give an update on the oft-delayed project.

He’s been taking his time and also producing for others including Rihanna and The Weeknd. “I don’t wanna overly describe it or overly try to hype it up,” said ‘Ye. “We’re working slow. I’ve had a while to work on it. Then I separated a couple of the tracks that were on my album—getting the other people like ‘FourFiveSeconds’ the Rihanna one, the joint on The Weeknd’s album, ‘Tell Your Friends.'”

While he released singles including “All Day” and “Only One,” he’s still perfecting the album’s sound. “I still just kept working and trying to find the language that I wanted to say on my album. Just going in the lab every night. It’s soundin’ good, like a sonic painting. And it gets better and better every week.”

His recent 808s & Heartbreak shows at the Hollywood Bowl reinvigorated him. “For me it just let me express myself more and still do a creative jump. There’s definitely some vindication in performing that album that got panned when it dropped and people were just dissing me and calling me crazy, as usual, and now it basically became the sound of radio,” he said. “There was vindication in that. But then I didn’t want to just leave it at that and just do a remake of the old videos or the old visuals that you saw. I wanted to put a visual opera next to the modern tragedy that that album was.”
