Can kobe break kareem's record of most points scored in their career?

Kobe already has reached 20,000 in his career and he's 29 being the youngest ever to do that, but do you think he can get 18,000points to break kareem's record and become the leading scorer? He would have to play for another 9-10 years to do that I think

Avoiding serious injuries, that is that he misses about an average of 5-10 games max per season until he's in his late 30s, I think he will break it.

But it won't last long, because LeBron will probably break Kobe's. And then some other high school prodigy will come into the league at the age of 19and start averaging 25 from day will break LeBron's.

kobe wont break it at this rate because of his change in gameplay nowadays. if he doesnt shoot 50 shots a game, i doubt he'll beat the record.

^ Not if the lakers ever want to win a championship again. I ageee with this guy, they have changed the way that they play as a team. So no.

There's a good chance, anything is really possible. Mind you he is not even that old though he's been on this league for more than eleven seasons. Theway he is playing majority on the perimeter (compare to Lebron) and he keeps himself in great condition I don't see why wouldn't he be able to reachKareem's scoring record.

Can he?

Of course.

Will he? I'm no psychic, but I'm saying that no, he won't.

Why not? Because it took him 11 years to reach 20K. He has 18K+ more to go. At the pace he's going, say it would take him 9 years to reach 18K. Alright, except there's a problem; son will NOT be averaging 30 a game 9 years from now. Or 8 years from now. As he gets older, his scoring will go down. Guardsrely on jumpshots, speed (to the basket), and agility (twisting in the air sometimes) to get buckets. Kobe will not be 37, 38, 39 years old slicing through thelane dunking on teams, hitting deep 3s with hands in his face, and hanging in the air for 27 seconds before scooping the ball into the basket on the other sideof the rim.

It's just not going to happen.

So his scoring WILL go down every year beginning in probably 2 or 3 years, so that 9 years it would take him to get that 18K at his current pace? Go ahead andstretch that to like 11, 12, maybe even 13 years.

And quite frankly (word to Stephen A.), I don't think he has a desire to play another decade+.

P.S. Please don't respond if all you want to do is argue the specifics of my reply. I get so tired of that. "I have to disagree ska. I don't thinkit will take him 9 more years. I think it will take him 7 years and 43 games, and he'll do it in the 3rd quarter of that 43rd game." Good for you.

"I think it will take him a solid 14 more years, not 11, 12, or 13 like you said" Awesome.

Agree/disagree with my point, not my specifics. Thanks.

I don't think he will break it, but I don't understand why everyone thinks Kobe is going to be done by age 35 or something. MJ played until he was 40;I don't see why a similarly conditioned athlete (Kobe) couldn't do that as well. I know he has logged more miles because he started playing at anearlier age, but he really wasn't getting that much burn his first couple of years. Also MJ was still averaging 25 a game before he got injured in his firstyear back (although it was with a bad field goal percentage and he wasn't scoring as efficiently as before).

All-around game arguments aside, everyone has to admit that Kobe is on par with Jordan as far as having a full arsenal of moves by which to score. I am sureKobe could still average 22-25 ppg when he's in his late 30's, unless his knees give out.

That is exactly what I came in this post ready to say.

I honestly think he wont be able to do it. By the time he hits 35 or so, he is going to slow down, and not be able to score like he can presently. This meansthat if he is to break the record, he has to score around 13-15K over the next 6 years. It seems like much. He has the ability to do it, but I dont think hecan break the record

I don't think he will get close. He still has to be going at his current rate up through his mid to late thirties. It's possible but I don't thinkhe'll get it done.

Nah, I don't think so. Kareem, as a center, had an easier time scoring buckets. The sky hook could take all day to come, but it always came. With Kobe, yeahe's got a great shot, but that'll only car him so far. His explosiveness to the basket will fall off in due time.

And oh yea, I think D12 (as SoHi 23 put it, has a great chance to do, if his game continues to grow.

Because it took him 11 years to reach 20K. He has 18K+ more to go.
Thats what I'll agree with & say he won't. When going after that 18k, the last couple of years he will be slowing down a little more& more. He will finish off with a great amount of points though, that is safe to say.

knowing Kobe, he will likely play until 37-40, His love for the game is unmatchable, hes never really had serious injuries, he will play ball untill his bodyliterally cant play anymore....

And I bet if you told him that he couldnt do it, he would try and prove you wrong and stay in the league until he has. Thats just the type of player he is

Why on earth do people think Lebron is a prolific scorer on the level of Jordan, Kobe, Kareem, Wilt or even AI?

Do you really believe he's gonna be a 30 a game scorer for the rest of his career? What if he starts playing with help? Son may score around 20 if not thatdepending on what type of team gets built around him.

Who knows just like who knows how long Kobe decides to play or how many points he will end up with.

As for Kobe the team is growing and his 30 point games come with more efficiency in blowouts ala 2000-2003 with Shaq and the vets on the team. Kobe scoring 50or 60 days may come one time a season if the Lakers keep growing like they are.

Expect Kobe to still be over 25 which is a good pace to get close to Kareem, but also see 7-8 dimes, and 6-7 boards with that along with DPOY status yearly.

I think its possible, because of the fact when kobe first came in the league he wasent averaging 20 somthin points a game. So getting to 18k that second timearound should go by quicker.
