Denver Nuggets (10-4) 2023-24 Season Thread: 11/22 @ Magic

I hope Connelly is just saying this, and is actually shopping Miller. He has never really seemed like he wanted to be part of the Nuggets since his return, and that was even with GK catering towards him--I can't imagine how unhappy he'll be coming off the bench with even less minutes.

Erick Green To Sign With Italian Team

July 30 at 11:11am CST By Luke Adams
Nuggets second-round pick Erick Green has agreed to terms on a deal with Italy's Mens Sana Siena, reports Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. Confirming the agreement, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports tweets that it will be a one-year contract for this year's 46th overall pick.

Green, 22, was the leading scorer among Division I players in the 2012/13 season, pouring in 25.0 PPG as a senior for Virginia Tech. The 6'3" combo guard also threw in 3.8 APG and 4.0 RPG to go along with a shooting line of .475/.389/.816. He was selected on draft night by a pick that initially belonged to Utah. The Nuggets acquired the 46th overall pick and cash from the Jazz in exchange for the 27th pick, which was used on Rudy Gobert.

The Nuggets will retain the rights to Green, but his deal with Siena means Denver won't carry a cap hold for his salary in 2013/14. The Nuggets should have another opportunity to sign him next summer, if they so choose.

A player-by-player look at the Nuggets roster

While things can always change before training camp opens in a couple months, Denver’s roster for 2013-14 stands at the NBA-maximum of 15 players. Eleven players remain from the group that won a team-record 57 games, while four players were added through trades and free agency.

The Nuggets also have a new coach in Brian Shaw and a new general manager in Tim Connelly as they look to extend their streak of 10 consecutive playoff appearances.

Here is a breakdown of Denver’s current roster and a quick assessment of each player heading into next season.

CENTERS

JaVale McGee – With incumbent starting center Kosta Koufos traded to Memphis, McGee is line for more responsibility after averaging 18.1 minutes last season. Potential is there to average double figures in scoring and rebounding.

Timofey Mozgov – Served as an insurance policy last season while playing behind fellow 7-footers Koufos and McGee. Mozgov moved up on the depth chart when Koufos was traded; he re-signed with the Nuggets on July 28.

GUARDS

Evan Fournier – Saw limited minutes for the first five months of rookie season but played well when given an opportunity in April. He will compete for more minutes at the wing going forward.

Randy Foye – Set Utah franchise record for 3-pointers in 2012-13, making him a perfect fit for a Nuggets team in need of perimeter shooting. Capable of starting alongside Ty Lawson or playing significant minutes off the bench.

Ty Lawson – After putting up career numbers in 2012-13, Lawson honed his game this summer by training in USA Basketball’s national team program. Could make a push for his first All-Star selection.

Andre Miller – Played in all 82 games for the ninth time in his career and has appeared in 841 of 842 possible games since Dec. 9, 2011. Veteran remains one of top playmakers in the game and is set to remain anchor of second unit.

Nate Robinson – Flew under the radar in free agency before finding a home with the Nuggets. Excelled for Chicago in the playoffs last spring and should provide instant offense off the bench for Denver.

FORWARDS

Darrell Arthur – Acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in the Koufos deal on draft night, he is an excellent pick-and-roll defender and can knock down the midrange jumper. In line to play 15-20 minutes per game off the bench.

Wilson Chandler – Slowed by a hip injury early in the season, Chandler emerged to average 18.9 points and 5.6 rebounds in eight games as a starter and twice scored 35 points off the bench. His importance increases with Danilo Gallinari’s status uncertain.

Kenneth Faried – Joined Lawson in Las Vegas with USA Basketball and emerged as a darkhorse to play for Team USA at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Enters season as incumbent starting power forward but will see completion from J.J. Hickson.

Danilo Gallinari – Led the Nuggets in 3-pointers made and was second in scoring despite missing the season’s final six games with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Recovery reportedly going well but no timetable for his return in 2013-14.

Jordan Hamilton – Showed flashes of his potential while scoring a combined 48 points in final two summer-league games in Las Vegas. Hamilton can stretch the defense with his 3-point shooting and is among big group of players in competition for minutes.

J.J. Hickson – As one of the most improved players in the league last season in Portland, he shot .562 from the field and was among seven players to average a double-double. Should be a spirited competition with Faried for starting job.

Quincy Miller – Second-year forward spent much of May, June and July at Pepsi Center working on his perimeter jumper and ball-handling skills. Given team’s depth, could see more time in NBA Development League.

Anthony Randolph – Remains one of the most athletic players on a roster full of athletic players. Saw limited minutes last season because of numbers crunch and will again have to compete for playing time.

Jared Jeffries accepts front-office job with Nuggets

Jared Jeffries, an 11-year NBA veteran, is transitioning out of his playing career and has accepted a front-office job with the Denver Nuggets, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

He will begin his post-playing career centered on a scouting role, sources said.

Jeffries, 31, has a strong history with new Nuggets general manager Tim Connelly, who worked in the Washington front office when Jeffries played with the Wizards from 2002-06.

JaVale McGee plans on using his jumper more next season

In an interview with NBA.com, Nuggets center JaVale McGee said that he thinks the Nuggets and new coach Brian Shaw are going to want him to use his jumper more next season.

“I'm definitely getting that feeling from the coaches that I'm going to be more of an impact and getting more minutes,” said McGee, who enters his sixth NBA season and second full season in Denver after 3 ½ oddball years with Washington. “It's really up to the coach as to how he wants to use me. It's up to me to work and everything, and I'm going to do that. So if I work hard and I come prepared and in shape for training camp, there's nothing that can stop me but the coach.”

“With players, my reputation is of a guy that you don't want to be caught running around with because there's a high probability you're going to get dunked on,” McGee said. “And my reputation is also a guy that you want to move the ball around in the air or else you're going to get it blocked, basically.”

“I definitely have post moves. I have a mid-range shot that I really never got to use my whole career in the NBA,” McGee said. “Coach Karl didn't want his ‘bigs' shootings at all. [Defenses are] probably going to leave me open for the mid-range, so I definitely got to take that shot.”

It's true that Karl didn't want his bigs taking he shot, but he also didn't want really anyone taking mid-range jumpers. They're hyper-inefficient from all but the most elite players, which is why Karl preached dunks, layups, threes, and free throws, with mid-range jumpers only as a bail-out. Now, Shaw's system is going to help some guys, most notably Ty Lawson.

I'm more than open to JaVale being more involved in the offense as long as he doesnt take dumb shots or commit too many turnovers

With a short leash/right attitude Andre can be a solid contributor. Nate/Dre are the only veterans on the squad.

Absolutely Blazers. I confident that Shaw won't allow Dre the freedom to do YMCA moves for 40 minutes each night while his capable backup gets no burn.

Damion James, Reginald Buckner join a crowded Nuggets training camp roster

On October 1, the Nuggets open their first training camp under coach Brian Shaw. With 15 players total and 14 of them already under guaranteed contracts (Quincy Miller’s is not), there were only a limited number of roster spots available for training camp.

Those will be filled by defensive-minded swingman Damion James and burly power forward Reginald Buckner. Both James and Buckner were added under non-guaranteed contracts.

Here is the expected Nuggets full training camp roster:

G Ty Lawson
G Randy Foye
G/F Wilson Chandler
F Kenneth Faried
C JaVale McGee
G Andre Miller

G Nate Robinson
F Danilo Gallinari
F/C J.J. Hickson
G/F Evan Fournier
F Darrell Arthur
C Timofey Mozgov
F Jordan Hamilton

F/C Anthony Randolph
G/F Damion James
F Reginald Buckner

,Denver will return to the Las Vegas venue to take on the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 19.

The remaining two preseason games are also on the road. The Nuggets play at Oklahoma City on Oct. 15 and at Chicago on Oct. 25.

Shaw wouldn't say for sure that JaVale is starting C. Remember, last Oct, JaVale was outplayed in camp by Koufos.. JaVale's gotta prove it

McGee said his goals this season are to average a double-double and lead the league in blocks. #Nuggets

I figured Shaw would give the younger players time to develop..

Goin inside out is gonna cause a lot of turnovers imo.. hopefully that part of the offense will be installed by Sunday so our bigs can get use to it in game situations

JaVale needs to be on it this year.. having potential wont get it this year

I'm ready for Sunday tho
