Moving to a different city

I just moved from Allentown, PA to Los Angeles.

I had cancer, and this environment is best for my healing.

I really miss my family and my ex girlfriend(we broke up... my fault)

But LA has been really good to me. There are plenty of opportunities that are just showing up for me here that would have never shown up for me at home.

In this world, sometimes you have to be where the moves are being made in order to help impact the cause that you want to commit your life to.

I want to cure cancer, and for me that is going to start here
Thats a pretty drastic move, id take LA over allentown though. what type of cancer you have?

Beat it twice

I love living in DC but i want to move to either Florida,Cali, or Texas for like a year or 2 just to see whats it like

Looking to move somewhere new and start over. Folks live in San Diego and LA and I am still living at my moms old house in Little Rock, AR with a couple of roomates. Situation is getting stale and im just looking for a fresh start. Money situation is ok and I would have to find a new job of course. Any suggestions or advice on this?? I've always wanted to move to a city like Chicago, New York or Philly. Thanks NT fam!!

OP:

My small piece of advice is to actually visit those cities that you want to move to. Multiple times if you can. Reason is, you can hear and see about it from various people/media and you can get caught up in the awe of things. Especially coming from the midwest, I'm assuming (forgive my ignorance) it's not quite at the pace of a NYC... And you'll get steamrolled with the pace of things, realize people in the city aren't as friendly, etc. Once you actually make the move, you'll realize that it's nothing you imagined haha. It'll save you a lot of hassle and all.

I also advise to be realistic with your expectations... As you've mentioned, you're going to need to find a job. What industry? What is your experience? Can you possibly transfer jobs at your current employer? Do you know anyone in these cities who can put you on? Shed some advice? Also, research the area you'd like to live, calculate your expenses, etc... It's really important to plan and have a gameplan, especially when transitioning to a new city.

I've actually moved countries, so I can shed some additional light. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out. Good luck!

P.S. I haven't gotten a chance to read through the whole thread so sorry if any of this stuff is repeated or already answered

I'm about an hour away from Allentown in NJ. How much does it cost to move to LA?

I mean it all depends on how you want to live?

Do you want to live alone, have roommates, or do communal living?

What section of the city do you want to live?

Will you drive, ride a bike, or ride a scooter?

Lots of variables

Preferably no roommates, not sure which section and I'll have my car.

Haha man that post was 5 years ago and someone brought back the thread from the dead! Living in San Diego now since July 2012 and things are going great.

Will do, thanks for the offer.
What aboit the carefree and cave creek areas? Is deaert ridge pretty much the same area?

Carefree and cave creek is a tad north and toward anthem which is scenically beautiful. A little more isolated, but like the other nter said...you can hop on the fwys here and be in any part of the city real quick. Also, we're only like 4.5hr drive to Las Vegas which is a way better drive than if ur coming from los angeles, ca.

**You will never see sunsets and skies more beautiful than az.

word.  desert ridge looks dope, and the price of housing very appealing.  Is it hard to find rental houses out there?  I have dogs and want a yard, and don't want to buy until after a year or two and we know for sure we want to stay.

It all depends on money and what will make you happy at that point

I had two cars and sold them both. After doing the math, I will save a lot of money with a moped/bicycle/bus combo instead of having to pay car insurance, gas, car maintenance, etc. The peace of mind of not having to worry about my vehicles has been great too. I save time too because traveling in LA by car is just stupid. Some people keep their cars so they can be uber drivers though, so that is something to consider.

And the section depends on what you want. I am still learning the city... but I like where I ended up. I stayed in a few hostels and got to know a few people first. After those discussions, I decided this part of the city was best. You just have to explore and find out what is best for you

The rental home market here is huge! You wont have any problems with that. Im in a 3br/ 3ba 2100 sq ft in Gilbert and I pay $1475 monthly. And, fapmaster is right, Vegas is so close. Wifey and I go about 4 times a year and the sunsets are stunning. The summers suck but we have 8-8.5 months of awesome weather here.

I'd apply for jobs in all the areas you're interested in, and see what opportunities come up for you. Good luck

damn! I pay 2300/month mortgage on my 3 br/2.5 ba house here that is only like 1700 sq ft.  I need to get out there for good man.  I feel like there is so much to do in the area (southwest), whether it is driving to LV, or up to Sedona for a weekend, or GC, or to Utah.  Just endless **** to do.

There is. Vegas and San Diego are my favorite places to go to. Were roughly 5 hrs from SD.

Just did some apartment searches for Phoenix on zillow.com I saw a 2 bedroom for $1,100

Rental is easy here. You probably won't find a more dog friendlier city than phoenix. Everywhere there are dogs! Parks in every community, dog parks all around, and dog friendly restaurants ( OHSO's, TheYard, etc) are plentiful.  Sedona and Flagstaff just 1.5hrs away...you can do that for day trips and hikes.  Stay overnight there and trek all the red rocks creeks.  You can do havasupai falls:

You can trek a few hours to Page.....There is horseshoe bend:

Havasupai is def on my bucket list.  My wife isn't in to a multi day backpack/camping trip though, I already tried to talk her into it.  She gets ornery if she doesn't have a shower.

Have you ever done it?

Sedona is one of my favorite places that I have ever been to, I love it there,

awesome man! is that the one off of Indian Bend (101 fwy?)  I've been there a few times, and the turn out has always been crazy nice!!

Currently live in the DMV, will probably try to move down south (ATL or Charlotte) in the next 5 years.

Yo man. I really gotta say I love this thread.

Just read through the whole thing.

To the poster, I believe on the 2nd page, that said basically "Just do you" and move if your gonna move and you'll find a way....that's basically it. Don't underestimate your ability to find your answer one way or another if you want to move somewhere and make that your new zero point. Definitely PLAN, but if you got a vision for your life....GO FOR IT.

And to my man Combo GD da gawd. Son, you an inspiration.

I'm gonna be 32 years old this year. I still live at home with my mom, sister, and nephew. I don't have a car. I have a good job. I have no problems stacking money right now....more to pay off my student loans for grad school....but still able to stack bread. And right now my goal is to move outta NYC by age 35. If I can go sooner....more the better. Not to knock NYC. It has provided me with a one of a kind upbringing in one of the best cities in the world. But i've been here too long. I want another setting for my life. Somewhere sunnier. This thread has given me some places to add to my research.

I'm looking at either FL because I got family there, Cali, or the southwest...Texas and NC are also choices.

Any advice for a guy not looking to move cities from within US, but from Australia to the US?

Bit harder with the visa issues. I'd love to save $5k - $10k and just up and move, but asking for sponsorship from a company is incredibly hard.
