Official 2012 Boxing Thread: JMM/Manny IV - FOTY.

Most people don't like Jr mainly because of how he's protected by Bob Arum, the WBC and HBO. The WBC essentially mandated that Jr had to face Sergio or vacate his title ( a title that HBO and the WBC basically handed to Jr after HBO refused to pay the sanctioning fees for Sergio vs. Zbik only to mysteriously pay for the sanctioning fees for Jr. vs Zbik) at their national convention only to immediately go back on their word and sanction Jr vs Rubio. Jr is living off his pop's name and hasn't really proven much as a boxer.

I feel the same way about JCC Jr. But at this point im starting to feel that way for most of the Top Rank fighters

The politics of the sport are robbing the fans of the fights we want to see.

I haven't checked this new documentary on Joe Frazier, but it's free. Also, check out the new doc about the Benn/Gman fight "the Fight of Their Lives". It was tough to watch, but pretty good.

Amir Khan just tweeted
"Big announcement. KHAN. Vs PETERSON May 19th, Mandalay Bay Hotel Vegas. At last I git the fight I deserve, Big thanks to @goldenboyboxing and KhanPromotion #beltscominghome"

Can't wait for this rematch.

Undercard fight is Matthyse vs. Soto

Yo Dan, What's the latest on the Rios / Gamboa fight? Gut Feeling: You think it eventually gets signed?

Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)

My understanding is the Rios side is good to go and the Gamboa side is getting there. I expect this to be finalized soon.

News.
Spoiler [+]
Light heavyweight titlist Tavoris Cloud was not a happy camper when former titleholder Zsolt Erdei pulled out of their Dec. 31 fight, citing an injured hand.

"When I first heard that Erdei wasn't going to be able to fight, I thought, 'Bull----. He didn't hurt his hand. He just doesn't want to fight,'" Cloud said Wednesday. "He ain't prepared to fight and he's just looking for a way out."

Javiel Centeno/Fightwireimages.comLight heavyweight titlist Tavoris Cloud, left, has been dominant when he has fought -- but dormant too often.

When Erdei dropped out, it gave Showtime an opening to cancel the expensive New Year's Eve card, which it had had second thoughts about putting on, rather than finding a replacement to fight Cloud.

But the network still had an obligation to Cloud and found the next available spot for him.

Cloud will make his fourth title defense against Spain's Gabriel Campillo, a former titleholder, on Feb. 18 (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET/PT) at the American Bank Center Arena in Corpus Christi, Texas. The fight will open the card headlined by junior middleweight Paul Williams (40-2, 27 KOs), in his first bout since a highly disputed majority-decision win against Erislandy Lara in July, against Japan's Nobuhiro Ishida (24-6-2, 9 KOs), who made a name for himself last April by knocking out James Kirkland in the first round for a huge upset.

"Showtime stepped up and stayed true to their word and they gave us a new date," Cloud said. "I appreciate Showtime for that. I'm not thinking about the past, I'm thinking about the future. I'm just going to keep on winning fights."

Cloud (24-0, 19 KOs) was initially quite upset about his fight in December being canceled. After all, he was trying to get on a bit of a roll after long stretches of inactivity.

He fought only once in 2009, twice in 2010 (and one of those fights was on a small show that few saw) and just once in 2011, in part because of the cancellation.

They are trying to come and take something that people have tried to take from me several times. It's like I'm defending my house and I've got thieves trying to break in. I've gotten pretty good at it. I can't put it into words what I plan to do to my opponent.

I believe the Canelo fight will be broadcast from another venue. (Mexico I THINK)

How can neither Showtime nor HBO be interested in Bute v. Froch? What am I missing here? Snoozefests like Hopkins v. Dawson II get greenlit though

I can see it from HBO's side.  They don't really have a stake in the division and if they buy this fight, both will probably head back to Showtime for a Ward/Kessler fight.  Why make fans start to like em on your network when they'll just go to your rival?  Stupid but I can see it.

Shane/Saul is in the same arena as PBF/Cotto, no split site.
