Official Blackberry OS/Device Thread

Blackberry's been getting a ton of solid press. Reviews are phenomenal and their momentum was better that what I expected. It comes out in Canada on February 5 so let's see how it goes.

I've tried it myself and I actually dig it better than iOS.

one another note, I'm glad they FINALLY changed the company name from RIM to Blackberry.

Well i disagree the review from most places i have read are ok. while it is definitely a step in the right direction there are many things that RIM need to work on.

Could you be more specific? I am think of getting one and I would like to hear what they needed to improve on.

I need a second phone for Talk and email only, no browsing, apps, or texting. Would the 9650 be a good phone for that?

Same situation here...I have Sprint, and they're only getting the Q10, so I'm waiting for that.

Played with the Z10 at AT&T though, and I liked it. The camera was fun to play around with!

^Picked it up through Verizon yesterday. The white is sooooo clean. The no home button thing is comin around and its very handy. As is the swipe type which is a timesaver.

Camera is high quality
Story Maker will be used:evil:

Any questions I can answer? I know people complain about apps. Im not a big app user, usually Myfitnesspal and instagram. Found a nice MFP substitute (Body Buddy) and can port in instagram.

I love my 9930 and the keyboard. What phone did you switch from? Just curious to see how you like the keyboard.

Never owned a phone without a keyboard, but when I played with the Z10 I already knew that the learning curve for me would be mastered in a just a few minutes. If Sprint were to get the Z10, I would cop in a hearbeat.

I'm on Sprint and patiently waiting for the Q10. I want a keyboard back in my life!

I've had the z10 for a over a week with AT&T. Pretty pissed at&t blocked the bridge to my PlayBook but there is supposedly a work around. My complaints are the actual display size is same as an iphone 5. Rubber grip is actually slick so it's constantly sliding in my hand. The Os swipe is not as smooth as the playbook I find myself reswiping quite a bit. The browser tab layout is not customizable.
My praises: browser is super quick. Virtual keyboard is amazing. I don't miss my apps from iphone because work has me so busy nowadays. Camera is dope. I like the hub a lot. Overall this phone feels dated already, I'm having regrets getting it. I have no desire to get any androids and ios is never gonna change so I'm stuck with bb10 until something else piques my interest.

I guess no one picked up the new Blackberry 10.

I picked it up the other day from T-Mobile.

Pros:

Design- Love it! i'm not a fan of the phablets that are out/coming out now. The design is very sleek and has a nice thin profile. Not thinner than the iPhone 5, but dam close to it.
OS- I like the OS. Its something new, slight learning curve than what your use to (think ios and android) I love the gestures for the OS. Blackberry 10 itself is pretty snappy going in and out of applications. There is still work to be done (Expected since it was built from the ground up)
Browser- Fast......the browser is very fast. Enjoyed my browsing experience with the phone.
Camera- Love the camera on the phone. Touch anywhere to snap a pic. Time shift is pretty cool. Shots were nice and crisp.
Notification- Was debating on putting this in cons or pros. Once you learn the gestures, the notification system is pretty good and you get use to it. While not android with the pull down or iOS with the sliding.....BB10 is different with the "peak" gesture.
Keyboard- Love it. Love the flick typing that bb came up with. No complaints on the keyboard.

Cons

Apps- While I don't game on my phone or download a tremendous amount of apps, they still lack some apps that I use:

1. Citibank. (Use this app daily) Not to thrilled that I had to use the browser.
2. iHeart radio. Im a fan of the breakfast club and listen to them in the mornings.
3. Pandora.
4. PayPal
5. Instagram
6. Textfree
7. IMO client.
8. Geico
9. Breaking news

I did sideload some of those apps from android. While it worked, it wasn't the best fluid experience (PayPal, Pandora, IMO)

Battery- I did not have alot of time to test the battery out. My brief time with it didn't leave me with a feeling that I could make it through the day under moderate to heavy usage. I cant comment further on it until I test the battery next time i pick it up and put it though its paces.
Email- This was probably the sole reason why I returned the Z10. I do not understand for the life of me that you can't send a 30-40 second video clip through email! Granted, you can reduce the size but the quality of the clip decreases GREATLY. iPhone has no problem sending long clips. Still baffles me why they do this. Also, there is no email app to click on, Its all in the hub where you can set it to view all messages, specific email accounts, texts ect. Like I said, takes time getting use to. Eventually, you will get use to it.
OS- While the OS is snappy most of the time popping in and out of apps, there seems to be a "Stuttering" effect in the transitions in settings. I would assume a software update will fix this issue.
Active Frames- While this is like a windows look with the live tiles. BB only gives you I believe 9-10 active frames (Don't quote me on the number). Once that limit is reached, it automatically closes the last active frame which I find pretty stupid. Your always making sure to close apps down every time you open one just to avoid reaching that limit.
Email again- I heard that your only able to search 30 days of your email messages. You cant search more than that. I did not test this one out, but I'm sure its true (read it to many times)

Overal, great device. If they can manage to fix the cons I listed, I will buy again and happily use it. Those apps are the most crucial part though. They have to entice developers to make apps on the bb10 os platform. Can I recommend this phone? If your not into apps...YES! If you rely on apps for various reasons....I would say no.....until BB gets on their app game.

I had the old Bold before touch screen ( cant remember name) and then the Droid Pro because Blackberry hadnt put out the touch Bold at that point. Real smooth transition gotten pretty fast at it typing without looking isnt there yet.

I love my z10, was able to sideload android apps such as IG etc.

The interface is clean, the HUB, is probably one of the best features. All notifications can show up there if you chose to use it, so you can respond to a fb message/comment, tweet, text, bbm, whatsapp, email all within one spot or you can chose to keep them separate.

Battery is not as strong as it was before but thats probably cause I use it so often.

Keyboard is impressive, i make a lot of mistakes on a touchphone but this thing can read your mind if youre close enough.

The multi app use is great, and its "peak" feature is useful.

a sleek phone overall. If you got any questions let me know

Is it worth it?

iPhone 5 User, that loves email...

Ive used iphones in the past, havent had the 5 though.

I like this one, so far.

I got it with tmobile, so its a 50 dollar plan month to month, you get the phone @ 140 dollars after taxes and youre only under contract for the rest of the phone's cost @ 530 dollars. so they add 20 dollars to your bill until you pay it off, then it goes back to 50. You can pay the balance off whenever though.

You can implement as many emails as you can and the Hub is great for it. PDF and email downloads are smooth.

Its worth it in my opinion but if youre all about apps id hold back until developers hop on because honestly thats all it needs, even then some of the sideload android apps work fine on my phone

I'm excited for the Blackberry Q10. I hardly use apps and I checked the ones that I have for my iPhone and they carry it on blackberry. May/June is taking forever to get here. I'm tired of my iPhone already.

the new BlackBerry is only on contracts right ?

i think i might give in and get a iphone when t mobile puts it out for sale

t mobile doesnt have much of a contract, 50 dollars a month, (month to month).

you pay 99 (140 post taxes) up front and the only "contract" you have is basically the 20 dollars added to your bill until you pay off the 530 its worth. you can pay it off any time and just dip tmobile

I got the BB Z10 and am very disappointed in the app selection.  Everything I was used to with my android is out the drain with this new phone.  The apps you'd get on the android are pay apps on BB and they're terrible.  The phone is nice, like the swipe features but I miss having my apps.

That's the only thing that's keeping me from getting. A bb. I love the user interface of both the z10 and q10. I much prefer it over android, but like you said, it's the apps.
If I do end up getting a bb. I'll mainly be using it for business purposes and I will be getting a 7 inch tablet to make up for the apps.
