Houston Texans Pre-Season 2014 - NT Bowl 2.5...Battle For Roster Spots

Case is a great QB. He just needs to get the system adjusted to his arm and methods. He's a speed back with a strong arm.

I wouldn't classify Case as great just yet; from what I've seen he's at worst a very capable backup.

Why not bring in a young stud like Bridgewater/Mariota...? With a season under his belt and a hotshot rookie on his heels you'd really see if Case could be great.
Worst case scenario; one of the two becomes a tradeable assett.

One thing is certain in the NFL; you will not win in today's league without a franchise QB

Are these guys franchise QBs? Really stop and take a look at all the starting QBs in the league. Too risky imo and really you can compete in this league with a sustainable QB. You need a defense that play makes and a line. Your trenches have to be A1.

If the Texans draft QB they dont need to waste it unless it's a huge upgrade. otherwise, they'll linger in mediocrity and squander a top pick.

So that I get this right from the majority in this thread, you guys are fine with our QB situation?

No, but there's a lot of other things to fix too. Drafting a quarterback that isn't the franchise qb could set us back further. I say we replenish talent all around, then find the qb.

You make it seem way easier said than done.

I just don't think you can be one of the upper echelon teams in the league of you're weak at the most important position on the field.

I don't think a team should be scared to draft a QB high especially if they need one.

I agree a great qb can hide a lot problems, but do we have more problems that can be hid?

it's not fright. It's about not making a dumb decision.

check this out: http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?type=position

that's a list of all QBs drafted year out and where they were drafted. I think this shows that unless you're 100000% confident you're drafting an elite, all world, stud....you'd be wasting a pick. It's not even some guess, this is the history of the draft. just a statistical numbers game. I haven't heard bonafide franchise QB out of any of the QBs so far, just high potential with question marks. Let's not be jaded by RG3 and Luck....especially considering where Kaepernick/RussWilson were drafted

Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert both got drafted over JJ Watt

Over the past 25 years how many bonafide can't miss prospect QBs have they're been? Maybe 3 or 4 tops. Frankly any time you draft a QB you're rolling the dice but that's just a chance you have to take. Taking an Eli Manning or a Matt Ryan is a hell of a lot sounder than hoping for a Tom Brady type 6 round Hail Mary.

And yea we have JJ Watt and yet were the worst team in the league so I don't know where you trying to go with that one.

 I'm not about to break down my point comparing the defending defensive MVP to Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert. If you don't get the significance or point there, it might be a lost cause.

There aren't a bunch of all world QBs coming out of drafts, yes. If anything that proves my point...why the hell would you roll that dice on a top 1-3 pick?

Yall would make more sense to me if you were pitching to trade down and get multiple picks...but it sounds like boys want that #1 pick to be Teddy

if he pans out, great. if he doesnt, again, Texans fall back into lingering in mediocrity without having significantly upgraded anywhere else.

You don't have to compare them, our w/l record is speaking way louder than anything you've said.

And yes I would roll the dice on the consensus best QB prospect over a pass rushing prospect every day.

Taking a QB would set us back farther IMO. If we put a rookie QB with this supporting cast, you're asking for failure. We literally have holes and no depth at almost every position group. This is a very important draft and we need to actually get solid production from our picks.

I think we are confusing franchise QB with elite QB. There are only 5 elite QBs in the NFL IMO, but you don't need one to win a SB (ravens).

You need a franchise QB, a bonafide starter that has you set at the position for the next 5 years to win.

The days of a dominating D and a game manager getting you a chip are over with today's rules IMO. You gotta have a QB that can make plays not just run the O

i agree with the game manager statement SORTA...league's changing..., but nobody is winning ships without a good, dominating, or at the very least play making defense.

But Flacco just proved a game managing QB can get you a ship.

wins/losses is a team effort. not even just the players. all the way into the front office/play calling.

rolling dice with the 1-3 pick would be nearsighted when you have other key critical positions to address. Maybe somebody in like the top 10-20 range at best would make more sense if you thought the QB position was THAT much of a concern amongst the other holes in our team

Well let me ask the thread this then, so you guys think we can win a Super Bowl with Case Keenum?

Is Case Keenum a franchise quarterback?

Glad all the draft talk picked up. To answer the most recent question, 1st half Keenum can lead us to or win a SB, second half Keenum, combined with a non-adjustment making coaching staff, would have us losing the same now.

That's why I think Keenun wobt be the starter next year, cause I don't feel a new coach will have him lead us. A new coach will want his own guy.

Just want y'alls thoughts on this scenario, since I'm still up in the air about this QB cast: Clowney taken 1st, or whoever the best OT is, followed by a recovered Mettenberger at the top of the 2nd round? Just wanted to get that out before I add anything.

Flacco is no longer a game manager; dude made some big time plays in the playoffs and SB

As for the draft; the D is full of talent and young talent at that. Don't need clowney that high in a league that is all about O now. Let's not forget this team won 14 games last year so they aren't that far away. QB is biggest need so address it; fill in other pieces later in draft

We need new coaching staff. It don't matter whom we have if we have the same coaching staff. Last year we got exposed, before last season we had no real competition and our prime time play was nonexistent. We get the national attention and our weaknesses are displayed for all to see. After Rodgers got done with us it was a wrap. Now our regular opponents know all our cards. Problem is that the coaching staff ain't adjusted.

As far Keenum, I can't say what we have until we get some solid coaching behind him. There only a few elite QB's in the league and iirc none did anything major in college. NFL is a any given Sunday league. It takes more than a hot shot player to get to the big show. It takes the will to win. I will say I see more of the will in Keenum than I do Schuab. Hopefully they do something about our coaching staff.

totally agree with the coaching staff. I was willing to give it one or two more years realistically.

and to dude above I guess I just agree to disagree. I don't think QB is our biggest need. Elite QB is a big need. we can use our current draft status to address a few holes/make our defense even more dominant. or go with a franchise level tackle. the top teams usually have great lines.our line is very suspect at RT

So roll with quite possibly the worst QB situation in the league while Luck & Bridgewater are in our division.

Yea sign me up for that!

you're being nearsighted and don't really understand the dynamics of building an entire football team. Nothing said is ever going to convince you.

I don't think anybody disagrees that QB is a need, you just aren't really getting the entire scope of building a team that obviously has other significant needs both personnel and front office wise.

guess that's the end of trying to help explain it so ill exit stage left on the topic. ha.

I do know you need high level QB play to win in the NFL and in terms of ranking we are towards the bottom in terms of our QB situation. If you don't think it's a big position of need for this team then fine it your opinion. I think we need a massive upgrade there.

You keep saying Bridgewater is no sure thing but neither is Clowney or Matthews. Pass rushers can be found, quality offensive linemen can be found, good quarterbacks don't grow on trees and saying we should pass on the best prospect if he's there is extremely shortsighted imo. There is no telling when we will be in position to draft a good one again and it gets harder & harder to find one past the 1st round.

I'm just not a fan of passing on a QB high especially if a team (ours in particular) needs one.

just thinking about this, but i cant even fathom how productive SWATT could be if Clowney could make an impact. I know we just drafted mercilus (who plays OLB in our 3-4), but if Watt can play some DT. if clowney could play some DT too, that would be off the charts. Like you literally wouldn't be able to game plan for Watt.

but that's the ceiling of the situation i suppose
